My girlfriend and I arrived at this magical location, the location was unique and beautiful, the food was crafted beautifully and was 10/10: fresh, tasteful, sublime! The restaurant is designed beautifully in a wabi sabi fashion fulfilling all your needs. Shoutout to John our waiter for being wonderful. Will definitely be our new favorite spot.
No Sake menu, and the top shelf sake recommended by the waitstaff was very subpar, and a good accompaniment to the omakase menu. Unacceptable.
Outstanding food. Great Service. Patio is awesome. Definitely a repeat.
Omakase and sashimi combination was fantastic! Not inexpensive, but very much worth it. We shall return.
UWS speakeasy sushi! Very lovely garden off the street allowed for a private dinning experience. We had the Omakase, a sushi plate and a sashimi all were good. These is a selection of beer, wine and sake available. Recommended I will be back, on our next visit I want to try the Omakase sushi & sashimi plate.
An unexpected find in our neighborhood, this restaurant has a below-ground garden which is isolated from street noise and pollution on three sides. The evening was chilly , but we felt sheltered and cozy in the space, which is about to be warmed by heat lamps --our waiter offered to bring a portable but we didn't need it. Service was adorable, our wait person was specially careful as we didn't order a set menu, and she was patient with language and food differences. Service was impeccable, unobtrusive and kind. As a saki fan, wine was excellent, although we were not numerous enough to explore a saki list. The carafe of Junmai Daiginjo was costly, as it should be. Very good experience.
The fish is fresh and great and the preparation is lovely. The service has been extraordinary each of the three times we've been there. I recommend highly and have done so to all my friends in the city.
You must try this new dinner gem. Outstanding
Wonderful staff and amazing food. The patio is fantastically spaced out and lends an air of elegance and comfort. The fish is absolutely of the highest quality and each one just melted. Our server was attentive and the courses timed so we could really enjoy each one fully. This is the real deal - each piece seasoned perfectly and bursting with different flavors. Highly recommended for an authentic sushi experience.
Amazing food and service. Great experience!
Very cute outdoor garden. Disappointed with the overall experience and value. Service was slow, disorganized and inconsistent with the wrong plates brought to the table on more than one occasion and the need to flag down the server for help or drinks. They don’t provide a drink list for wine/sake so you need to inquire about availability and pricing. The menu is small and omakase is the way to go but we don’t think it compares to the omakase at Sushi Kaito (hope they survive the pandemic). The three rolls we tried from the a la carte menu were just ok and did not taste fresh. At $400 all in for two people we expected a much different experience. All of the staff, however were very pleasant and welcoming. The space is beautiful, unfortunately at this price point I don’t think we’ll be giving it another shot. I had high hopes.
Do yourself a favor and have their sushi delivered, because their efforts are focused on the delivery orders more so than the customers actually dining there. Service was really terrible. My wine never came and the soup was just lukewarm. Menu is very limited, only about 10 items to pick from. Ask for the A la carte menu.
The sushi, when it finally arrived, was excellent. So skip the visit to the cold outdoor patio (which has no heaters- they should invest in some) and get the sushi delivered. Enjoy it better at home.
Very high quality fish. A little pricey for the overall quantity. But it’s a serious sushi restaurant
Excellent food and service. Just what we needed. Be prepared to pay up to do it right. But so worth it.
Some of the best sushi I’ve ever had in NYC - highly recommend.
We ordered only the omakase. The sushi was uniformly very good with the uni and maki handrolls being exceptional. We both felt that the seasoning of the rice was a bit too strong so as to slightly overpower the fish served. We've been sushi enthusiasts in the city for nearly half a century and my wife is a native of Japan.
The service and ambience were truly outstanding. A warm, efficient and welcoming staff along with generous spacing in the lovely garden result in a quiet and romantic overall experience. This establishment deserves the highest recommendation and support.
A beautiful garden oasis. Like being on vacation in the middle of the city. Sushi is delicious and different. I did not care for the seaweed salad, which is probably authentic but too seaweedy (fishy?) for me.
Portions are small, prices are very high. We had one omekase (for one person), one salad one extra roll and one glass of wine. The bill came to over $200. And we went home for ice cream.
It's a lovely experience, but not a place I will be going too often.
Fantastic hideaway! Found this restaurant since I was looking for outdoor dining but something that wasn't on the street and had some space. Saw they had a back garden and it looked great and then I read the reviews others had posted. They were spot on. This food is outstanding!
This is not your run of the mill sushi restaurant where you get rolls and globs of spicy sauce on some tuna. I had the Omakase and the Sushi dinner and shared it. Beyond delicious. The subtlety in how they prepare the fish and the Omakase pieces each had some dollops of sauce on the fish which brought the flavor profile to another level. I would not be surprised to see them mentioned in next years Michelin Guide.
(If I had one criticism it would be the price if the drinks - they said they had Sake and White Wine. We had one of each and there was a $45.00 charge on the bill and from what I can tell that was for the drinks - knowing the price in advance would have been helpful and I was surprised by that charge (yes I am used to $18.00 glasses of wine) and I still have no idea how much the wine was vs the sake.
However, putting that aside, I wish them all the luck in the world since they deserve to be successful and provide a wonderful dining experience.
The owner came over and that was such a lovely treat to meet her. She was warm and friendly and happy we came to dine there.
The backyard for outdoor dining was amazing. I didn't hear cars, loud voices, or any type of noises that you normally hear at outdoor dining. The service was phenomenal and the food was unforgettable. Definitely will go back again!
Amazing service. Owner is the sweetest. The sashimi was amazing.
Love love love this restaurant. Incredible staff, food, and the backyard garden is lovely and quiet. It’s such a wonderful gem in the neighborhood!
Best sushi in NYC, top 5 in the country! Beautiful ambiance outdoors, feels like you are in a small town. Incredible service, Toya is a gem of a waiter. And Shizu is the most beautiful inside and out, what a special restaurant she has created. Very authentic and fresh fish from Tokyo! So happy we found this spot and will definitely be back regularly. Can’t recommend it enough!
Great garden setting
Amazing outdoor garden seating. Had the sashimi platter. Will definitely be back for the omakase when I'm feeling hungrier. All the chefs trained for 30+ years and all the food is imported from Japan! Very authentic.
Had a friend visiting from Seattle and wanted a night out having sushi. From the moment we walked in the door the service was exceptional. We were seated on the outdoor back patio which was beautiful and serene. The quality of the sushi was out of this world and some of the best I’ve ever had.
Amazing food and a wonderful outdoor space. Truly a gem!
Fabulous outdoor dining in the private back patio. Outstanding sushi and friendly service make for a lovely socially distanced culinary treat during the COVID era. For those who are scared to dine at a restaurant, this is the perfect way to ease yourself back into the NYC new normal dining scene.
Best sushi on the UWS. The garden dining was beautiful and the staff were very friendly and accommodating. We will be back!
Really nice setting I’m the back garden. It feels like real restaurant dining since you aren’t battling bike lanes and sidewalk traffic. It’s a treat for covid times and will go again.
Beautiful setting, fresh delicious food. Hospitable service. Perfection.
I almost hate to leave a good review because so far I have had no trouble getting a reservation, and I don't want that to change! Nonaka is a high-end sushi restaurant tucked into the basement of another establishment. Nonaka has the good fortune of possessing a back courtyard, which, due to COVID-19 restrictions, is where all the tables are. Although you are, inevitably, at the mercy of the weather, the setting is otherwise pretty great: quiet, serene, and a world away from the eating-in-traffic ambience offered by so many other restaurants trying to survive the pandemic. Tables are well-spaced, and the service is attentive. Menu options are limited (for the main course, you can have the "sushi set," the "sashimi set," or the omikase, period) and the price is higher than your average sushi joint, but in my book it is worth the money, at least for a special occasion.
Sushi size could be bigger at this price....
This may be one of the top sushi spots in the city that no one knows about yet. Incredible service and food. Great little backyard dining experience where we got treated with a cello performance at the end
Beautiful and quiet outdoor dining. Friendly staff, fresh & delicious dishes, will definitely visit again
A cute speakeasy restaurant on UWS. The outdoor seating was unique, the owner definitely put thoughts and efforts in it. Food was on average - we ordered 3 appetizers and sushi/sashimi sets. Nothing came out surprisingly good. But I guess it's fair for the price.
Staff was friendly overall, however, we didn't get the food we asked them to pack to go (only a bowl of rice but still). Also, we waited for at least fifteen minutes for the check.
Overall, a nice change up from WFH and EFH. But probably won't come again, at least for a while.
Nice garden seating and omakese sushi. Great service.
INCREDIBLE SUSHI AND SERVICE
From start to finish our experience at Sushi Nonaka was wonderful. The food was well priced for the excellent quality and the sake was delicious. The service was excellent, as the entire staff was kind and patient. I cannot wait to go again.
Absolutely superb Omakase - and they could probably charge 25% more for it. The staff are inviting, friendly and professional. The patio was quiet and cozy.
We had a wonderful time and look forward to a second visit shortly.
