Influenced by the bold flavours of South East Asia, Sunda’s menu will see the more daring and unexpected elements of Indonesian, Malaysian and Vietnamese cuisine brought together - using lesser known ingredients and techniques.
Sunda _ offers both an a la carte and set menu with the option for matched beverages.
I understand what the "hype" is all about now ... an amazing and creative menu supported by a team of professional and passionate staff ... will soooo be back. Thanks for a great night.
great flavours brilliant service
Great service, great food, amazing flavours.
Good choice of wines.
My friend and I thoroughly enjoyed our evening at Sunda. The only small issue was with our waitress who was a little rude but everything else was perfect. The manager was extremely welcoming and the food was amazing
Excellent food, great service. I really love the roti with vegemite curry and wagyu rendang bun! Definitely recommended
Great venue, great food, great service.
Inventive Asian fusion.
Amazing food. Presentation and tadte are outstanding! You have to try roti and lamb. But overall good selection of wine and service just perfect . Will definitely come back!
Combines interesting, well presented and tasty food with a great wine list and exceptional service.
Overall food was great. Great ambiance and actually great service as well. Love the prata and the Otak-otak - very flavorful for an interpretation of a street food classic. However, we were taken back by how bad smelling the lamb dish was and the remark said to us by the waiter. I've always heard good reviews about the lamb dish, how it does not stink of "lamb" and that it was juicy and very tender. Knowing this we ordered the dish hoping to get the same experience. However it was smelling so badly, even my friend who enjoys eating lamb often (I do not eat a lot of lamb dishes normally) could not take the smell and can't even swallow the meat and thus we left the dish uneaten. When we told the waiter about it, explained how we actually enjoy lamb dishes and that this dish was way over-smelling, he simply answered "well lamb meat always comes with their unique smell, so I guess this is normal". I know that maybe this should be how it is (although all my other friends who came here recommended the lamb dish as it was NOT smelly), but that remark wasn't very pleasant to hear. Anyways, overall a great experience here, maybe a slight disappointment with the remark on lamb.
Awesome we will be back !
Forward thinking fusion of Asian and Modern Australian cuisine that is fun and exciting.
Sunda was pretty good. The atmosohere is trendy and the service was great- pleasant and efficient.
However the poortions were tiny for the price. $29 for a tiny piece of eggplant is simply taking the mickey when considering the price of eggplants. Flavour was tasty though.
Great experience - reminds me of Ko in New York where food experimenting is key
The portions are really small and a few staff are a bit snobby.
Trendy industrial decor, tucked away on Punch Lane. Excellent service, efficient, friendly and attentive. The flavours in the food were amazing. Fresh, zesty, fun and sophisticated. Really beautiful dishes.
Although this place is fine dining in a more casual atmosphere, it is still incredibly expensive for portion size compared to similar standard Vietnamese cuisine.
A one off experience.
Amazing! Such good food - can’t go past the roti!!!
Not enamoured by the service but the food made up for it. Decor was interesting and industrial, in a great location too.
Mains blew me away as did the dessert, entrees / starters I could’ve given a miss.
Fabulous food and excellent service. We’ve been here a few times and have never been disappointed.
Brilliant service. Excellent wine list. Generous and attentive staff and an absolute treat for our wedding anniversary. The food is just excellent- the vegemite curry with delicious roti, marron, octopus was to die for and eggplant is all just excellent. Dessert is excellent too - honey cake and the pavlova. This place is setting a new standard in Melbourne.
Our meal at Sunda was amazing. Looking at the menu we had no idea what to order and what to avoid which was really fun, the minimal descriptions not giving anything away. Sitting at the bar near the pass and asking the friendly wait-staff we identified what we wanted and were not disappointed. Everything was delicious and the French white we had was divine. Thank you so much for a truly unique and delicious experience!
Innovative Indonesian Cuisine. Tastes and texture where very enjoyable.
Fantastic! Great food and service. A must try in Melbourne. Thank you for a great evening!
Definitely recommend sitting at the bar. Great food and great service
Familiar flavours with a twist! Well executed dishes and attentive service.
Everything was amazing!! we will be back for sure ASAP. Never get rid of the roti with vegemite curry sauce!! I was all amazing. Thanks for having us. It was our 2 year anniversary, you guys made it even more special. Cheers
HIGH STANDARD OF FOOD AND INNOVATION AND FIRST CLASS EXPERIENCE
It was our third visit to Sunda and it was still amazing. The food, the service & ambience everything was spot on. Our friends were also impressed on their very first visit to Sunda.
Enjoyed my birthday dinner here at Sunda. Food is amazing, delicious and flavor is authentic to south East Asian flavor. My only feedback is the waiter that attend us is pushy; keeps reminding us that they will kick us out at 8pm. The tables are 2 hour seating arrangement. This ‘reminder’ makes us not feeling welcome and don’t feel they appreciate us there. I will come back but not anytime soon.
Ambience was excellent, the knowledge of the waiting staff was very good and the food was exceptional, overall a wonderful experience.
After reading all the hype and passing this restaurant on route to eat elsewhere we finally made a Friday night booking and wow - we wished we hadn’t waited to long. Sunda definitely lives up to all the wonderful reviews it’s getting and we loved every single dish from start to finish.
The wait staff were happy to chat, with great knowledge of the menu and wine list. We had what has become the famous buttermilk roti with vegemite which we will now have to have every time we go! Delicious, crunchy and just the right vegemite tang. Oysters were just really delicious and a must have if you’re an oyster lover. We followed these with the spanner crab curry, the crab is treated perfectly and not overpowered by the curry flavour.
Next up was the cured kangaroo, this was described by staff as a mixture between a Thai larb and a steak tartare and we thought was a perfect description of a wonderful dish. We then had the smoked eggplant, lamb rump and a delicious side of egg noodles with chicken crackling. We are often disappointed by main meals after wonderful entrees but not at Sunda, they were as good as all the smaller dishes and we couldn’t fault anything we ate. This was all washed down with a gorgeous Chardonnay from Cobaw Ridge, one of our favs.
Dessert we shared the jasmine rice cream with mango and liquorice which was a crunchy delight! Also had the honeycomb cake which was a perfect finish and not to sweet. Loved it!
We will now return often!
Lovely dishes and friendly and attentive staff
Left feeling quite hungry after feed me menu
Not sure about the industrial look - looks unfinished - acoustics suffered as a result
Not sure if we’ll be back
A wonderful experience, thank you for the looking after us so well, our waiter was awesome
The food was fantastic. Unfortunately we had to wait almost twenty minutes for the drinks that we ordered on arrival. There was no mention of being compensated for this delay. It's quite a noisy venue.
Had the Chefs selection, every dish was amazing!
We had the degustation and were not disappointed and added the signature dish - a truly utterly buttery heavenly roti with a vegemite curry dipping sauce that converts the most hardened vegemite haters. Ah-maze-zing.
Bite sized deliciousness in the pie tee’s. Crispy tempeh with biting muntries.
Otak otak - silky spanner crab parfait goodness. Raw (ceviche) cobia with creamy lemony curd.
Peppery XO egg noodles crunched up with chicken crackling.
Delicious pink lamb rump with a native cashew cream curry.
Finished off with a perfectly constructed deconstructed Vietnamese coffee dessert.
I’m going back real soon.
Grab a seat at the bar to experience some heavenly treats whilst watching the action in the kitchen unfold before you. We had the set menu and found it to be inventive, wholesome and delectable in new ways. The staff are friendly and engaging. I still can't get over how tender the lamb was. Go
Loved it! Delicious and unusual food and great service.
Great venue with fantastic food. Flavours and experience overall was great but service could be improved as wine and water was dropped when being poured by waiters.
Had no idea the dishes were so small. We were still hungry after we left and we’re not big eaters either.
Impeccable service in the front of the house is so important as no matter how delicious your food is, bad service can ruin a night out and the whole dining experience.
For all the rave reviews and the chef hat awarded to this restaurant, we had great expectations but the night for us ended on a sour note.
We understand the seatings are two hour slots. We were seated at the communal table and was booked in at 6:30pm. I was running late but my husband had ordered our food and he went a la carte based on the waitress advice as the set menu would make our time tight to finish our meal within two hours. When I got there the food had just arrived. Things were going fine, we were having a good meal.
The table next to ours finished their savoury dishes and at 8:15 was asked if they would like to have a look at the dessert menu. So when we finished our savoury dishes and the waitress came around to top up our water, my husband asked if we can have a look at the dessert menu. He was outright refused. I turned around and said you just offered the couple next to us just 2 minutes before if they would like to look at the dessert menu and then to say to us they can’t possibly serve us dessert as we were reaching our 2 hour slot. To top it off when we inquired what time their booking was, the waitress says they booked at 6:15 so when she offered them dessert they already passed their two hour mark. Yet we still had 15mins to our booking but it was too late for us.
I can understand you have a policy and you have bookings after us. If everyone was treated the same we wouldn’t have made a fuss. I am not one to be confrontational but when we were clearly provided with a inferior service and bad attitude, it was not acceptable.
