Sunda is a confluence of vibrant South East Asian flavours and native Australian produce orchestrated by Head Chef, Khanh Nguyen. Influenced by the bold flavours of South East Asia, Sunda’s menu will see the more daring and unexpected elements of Indonesian, Malaysian and Vietnamese cuisine brought together - using lesser known ingredients and techniques. Sunda _ offers both an a la carte and set menu with the option for matched beverages.

Oké, if you like industrial interiors this is the place to be, but what a noise! The food however was great, staff was friendly, but Very pushy and in a great hurry to finish the service, what we think is inappropriate for a restaurant with these prices! There is not much privacy, because there are only large tables so you will be sitting right next to your neighbors! No problem of course, but if you don’t like this, don’t go there, but you will miss incredibly good food!

Too noisy and overpriced.

Table not ready so sent away. We were told they would call us but it didn’t happen. The same maître de was clearly in a bad mood when we checked in again.

Positive - presentations were amazing, very creative ways to present Malaysian dishes. All dishes looked beautiful. I particularly like the char kway teow replaced with squid, it made me wanted the real thing.

However, some dishes lacked balance of flavors.The authenticity of the Malaysian flavor were mostly lost. This is quite obvious in the otak otak - the inclusion of spanner crab excited me however the "otak otak" i.e. the curried gel underneath tasted too much like the curried vegemite. I had wished that the waitress told us about the similarity of the two flavors. The flavors of the smoke eggplant were frankly quite bland. The acar was average - I certainly think my mum and granny made much better acar.

As a Malaysian I think there's beauty in every dishes that we were served. Great idea, great creation, beautiful presentation, I trust that knowing how to recreate the authentic taste and flavor of Malaysian dishes will bring this restaurant to another level. You cannot just open an Asian Fusion restaurant to target the 'ang-mo' (or guai lo or caucasians), all Asian Fusion restaurateurs need to convince the Asians first!

The dining experience is always special at Sunda. The communal seating throughout the restaurant makes the place feel cosy, gives the option to interact with your neighbours but also enough privacy to stay to yourselves if that’s what you prefer. The food is interesting and amazing, especially the eggs noddles with crackling are a Dich I can never go past. The service is on point, super friendly and because of them I now have a new favourite on the dessert menu - the honeycomb! It’s the perfect place to go on dates or with a bunch of friends and family!

Beautiful food, fantastic service and great surroundings. Only issue were all the people taking pictures of every course that came out. Including the people sitting next to us on the share table. Can’t help but think that taking pictures of your food detracts from the enjoyment of eating it. That is just a personal opinion and a minor criticism of the clientele. Not the restaurant.

Even though I’m not a fan of Vegemite after trying a life changing Vegemite scroll at Attica I was looking forward to try this ‘off the menu’ item and boy did it live up to the hype. The curry was flavourful and complex while the roti was perfectly crunchy. Just wish it was was less oily. This was a recurrent theme and all six dishes we ordered felt a bit oily/rich. However, flavours were pretty much on point as stated on the menu and couldn’t fault any of the dishes.

Unfortunately the service was less so. At one point we had four dishes in-front of us within a span of 20 odd minutes and had to ask two different staff before the pace slowed down a bit. While I was picking at the last couple of dishes got approached by a staff member and got told we could only have our table for 15 more mins and we should order dessert then if we wanted to have any. This clearly is not the place if you are looking to have a relaxing dinner. I won’t be revisiting solely because if felt rushed. Such a shame since its some of the best south East Asian inspired dishes I’ve had in Melbs.

What a terrific night at Sunda. We haven't stopped thinking or talking about the food since, and will continue to return time and time again. We had the tasting menu, which did not dissapoint! Fabulous food, service and an overall great vibe. The spanner crab curry was a standout for me!

Team did a great job of catering to our requirements for quiet seating (semi deaf) and one person at the table who couldn’t eat fructose, gluten or dairy with the feed me option. Great flexibility and we weren’t made to feel like a bother at all. Thank you!

This was a wedding gift so it was a special occassion. It was a super hot night and the aircon was struggling as expected. However the staff were very attentive and the food was superb.

The food is really good, the best food for me is the roti canai and otak otak. The services are pretty good friendly staffs and fast service. Overall experience I’m happy with everything and will come back for sure.

Booked Sunda for 9 people for my partner’s special birthday. Everything was perfect from start to finish. The ease with which they dealt with our varied dietary requirements, the flavours and presentation of the food and the smooth and attentive service. It was an absolute winner for the whole group - my father-in-law even said it was the best meal he had ever had. Top praise. Thank you Sunda 🙌

Lovely restaurant, beautiful Malaysian flavours and attentive service. Lots of choice for vegetarians and menu lends itself to plate sharing. Despite the timber floors, the noise levels were low which made conversation easy.

Loved it! Our server was amazing... food amazing, great vibe. Worth the extra $$$ as it’s not overly cheap. Happy with doing the $85 a head so we got the best of the best off the menu!

Bold flavours, yet delicate. Coming from Singapore, it can be challenging to find a pleasant different take to what I have grown up eating. This takes all the familiar flavours up at notch. I only wish we had a bigger portion for the gado gado...I would have loved more veggies to dunk into the lovely sauce!

The The wine selection and the food makes beautifully the timing of the courses was excellent and the little details well noticed we appreciated the visual impact and the food was interesting creative and enjoyable The favourite was the oysters which I’ve never had done in this matter and I would’ve loved to have had probably three times when I ordered the other highlight was the one who beef which was so tender and just do it on its own

We went for my birthday dinner after being recommended by a friend. The food was beautifully prepared and presented with interesting and unique flavors. However small portions and quite expensive. We received food prior to drinks which is disappointing in fine dining restaurants. Overall we enjoyed dinner, however, didn’t feel it was amazing value for the overall dinning experience.

Food and ambiance was divine and as there is so many great restaurants available in Melbourne it means standards are high and unfortunately a couple of factors brought the overall experience down:
- we ordered set menu and were still hungry afterwards
** in comparative restaurants such as chin chin and supernormal, if you are still hungry with the set menu they will bring out another dish/es
** could have ordered individually from the menu and it would have been cheaper
** as we were eating food we were remarking that Sunda might in fact be our new favourite but as we walked away still pretty hungry I think I'll be challenged to convince my partner to come back

- the first wine we ordered was from the light and fruity section of the menu and it was actually quite heavy

- we were disappointed that the famous roti had already run out for the evening

The presentation was great: really beautiful. But beyond that the taste was mediocre -- very overpriced for what you get. I would have been happier with a less meticulous presentation and better food. If you go, order a la carte. The set menu was pretty grim. We were sitting around for a half hour waiting for dessert, it came just as we were getting ready to go.
If you like to look at your food go here. If you like to eat it, go somewhere else.
