Sugar Factory - Chicago River North
We made a reservation and attempted to visit the Sugar Factory - RN location. I say attempted because we were seated at our table and after waiting over 15 minutes not a single server acknowledged us or took any type of order. We turned in our menus to the head hostess, advised her of our dissatisfaction and left the establishment. She was silent.
I would recommend coming here for one of their special drinks. That's fun. The food is passable and expensive. The dessert we had, ice cream sandwich, was ice cream between two of the hardest cookies imaginable. Don't know if they were stale or if that is the norm. Certainly not worth the price. Also, they were out of a few things we wanted to order. The goblet drinks are the only thing I would recommend.
Fun place for all ages! Excellent food and desserts!
The waitress did not check on us and I had to leave my table to ask for service. It took half an hour for waitress to attend us and another half hour to receive our check. After receiving our check she left us for another 15 minutes and my party almost walked out. Not a good experience at all and it was my birthday
Drinks and desert was very good main food was terrible
Fast service great food and wonderful staff. Will definitely go back there again
I went to Sugar Factory to celebrate my birthday. It was so loud in the restaurant. My party and I were yelling and trying to read lips to understand each other. The food was mediocre. I ordered the chicken and waffles. You can skip it, not worth ordering. Several people in my party ordered shrimp and chicken Alfredo. They loved it. They said the garlic bread it comes with is too hard though. I ordered one of those fancy drinks you see in the big glass- a waste of $36 dollars. My drink didn't have much candy, I asked the waitress if she could add more candy, she gave me some bs about why she couldn't. Meanwhile we are at a table that is near where they make drinks and I can see all the waiters and waitresses adding huge amounts of candy. Barely in alcohol in the drink. They waitress suggested two people share the drink, but I don't see why. My reservation was for 10pm. My party did not arrive until 1045p almost. I was happy they still allowed us to sit. Most places would have cancelled the reservation. Would I go back? Maybe not for myself. I'd definitely take a mid to enjoy it. It's hyped for no reason.
Besides the incredibly long wait, which the manager helped with our orders and compensated us, my experience was amazing. I would definitely go again. I hope you guys are opening a location in Michigan
The service was very slow. My reservations were made for 6 then I modified it to 7 and it didn’t show on the hostess side so we had to be moved to a bigger table where we waited 15 to 20 min to be greeted by our hostess. The restrooms were nasty unkept and not properly stocked. The floors were slippery. The prices were outrageous for the food to not be great. I ordered chicken Parmesan and the chicken was burnt. The pasta was dry. I changed my order for hamburger to go. Wasn’t pleased.
Great way to celebrate sweet 16 bday!! Food is fantastic!!
The Sugar Factory's service was very slow and the food seems likes it came from a buffet. I added steak to my salad and it was all fat. It also took me about 30 minutes to just get a glass of wine.
Lovely as always!
It was ok. The server wasn’t that attentive. The drinks were cute but that’s as far as it goes. We really thought we was given virgin drinks. The food was fine. The steak was a little over cooked. For the price and value I could have gone to Grand Lux and gotten better service from the waiter. And definitely stronger and better drinks.
It was something different to do while downtown Chicago, but drinks were WAY overpriced and the food was average, but was reasonable for downtown. We had a reservation and still had to wait 20-30 mins for a table. We requested a booth and was told no due to only having 3 people and ended up at a table near the kitchen with a not so nice view. Service was slow but waitress was very nice though. Kids liked it and it was a once time experience. I will not be going back again though.
The host act as if she didn’t want our service. Also I modified my reservation online and she told us that it wasn’t showing up on her end.
Poorly managed. Overrated. Less than average food. Service was terrible and the restaurant was filthy.
Although, you not buying the the ultimate ice cream delight. I feel you still should sing Happy Birthday! Too first time visitors, no matter what. We spending money just like all the rest
The velvet seating in the booth is all stained and looks like it hasn’t been cared for in a while. The food is a bit overpriced but the 36oz drink was good.
Service was great! The food was outstanding. It was a bit noisy, but not too bad. Next time would like to request a booth
It was a very busy Friday like expected and the service was okay.
I would only recommend for desserts. We celebrated my son’s birthday and he had a blast. The food was okay, and way overpriced. The environment and concept are fun. When I inquired about the mandatory 20% gratuity for parties of 5, Server made sure to tell us all about how that has to be split so many ways amongst servers. Unnecessary after dropping hundreds of dollars for overpriced mediocre food, not to mention 50$ just to park. Also, for all the money spent servers couldn’t sing happy birthday with out having to but most expensive dessert?
The entire experience was awful. From the beginning when they took us back and our table wasn’t ready (not a big deal at the time, but compounded with everything else, it was) then the table we got was so wobbly you couldn’t even touch it to the poor service. It was all a bad experience. Even my 9 year realized it. Waited over 40 min after ordering for 2 shakes and a fondue. Told it was coming right away only after having to flag our waiter down like crazy. Watched many people sit down after us order the same things we had and finish and leave still while we had no order. After another 20 min our order came and was stale and one shake wasn’t even made correctly. Waiter didn’t ever come back to check on us or even apologize. We had to find a manager to talk to and to even get our check. Then no one would even take our payment. So we scrounged up the cash so we could finally leave after the 1.5 hour fiasco for dessert only.
The Sugar Factory did NOT disappoint! I've been wanting to go to this restaurant for many years, not only for their famous smoky drinks but for their desserts. And my husband and I got the watermelon patch drink, rainbow sliders, chicken parmesan and the salted caramel shake. It was all great especially the shake! Steven W was our server and he was very friendly and helpful! I've already recommended my friends to visit the sugar factory.
I try not to leave negative reviews but this place is abismal. I brought my niece (5) and nephew (9) for dessert. We ordered a chocolate fondue and I ordered a peanut butter martini, after being ignored for the first 15 minutes I was there. The waiter only came over because I sat with my hand in the air when I realized I couldn’t get anyone’s attention. We finished the chocolate fondue and I hadn’t gotten the drink so I asked the server to just bring me the check since I no longer had time to enjoy the drink as the kids were getting restless. Instead of dropping the check, he went all the way to the bar to get the drink that I told him I no longer wanted, so that I would HAVE to pay for it. IT WAS SOOOO EMBARRASSING. Don’t go to this place. Save your money and go to Jeni’s.
Our server was AMAZING and he made our lunch some much better. I’ve been the one in Rosemont and this was a WWAAAY better experience. Definitely recommend this location
Definitely not for foodies! It’s a tourist stop with over priced food and drinks.
Sugar Factory came up as a great place to take children. I felt the atmosphere and prices were more for adults than kids. That said service was excellent and food was very good.
It was ok. It was nothing special. It’s like going to a Hard Rock or Rainforest Cafe.
Service was wonderful! However, one of the goblets we got was inaccurate with the picture shown on the menu (watermelon patch had no sour patches) and we got an insane milkshake that was supposed to have a cupcake but they ran out apparently. However, the service was great and so was the overall atmosphere!
The visit to the Sugar Factory was great. Good service and great atmosphere food was ok but overall nice place. Will go back
The food was not good. It was overpriced for the quality. The videos and pictures of celebrities was distracting from the experience. I really wanted to love this place but ultimately did not.
Horrible just horrible experience! We weren’t greeted upon entering. We were seated at a disgusting table. Food was so gross. I’ve never had to force food down my throat. When we got our food we waited 15 mins for silverware which should’ve been at the table prior. Our waiter was rarely around. We were charged 80$ for the worst food we’ve ever tasted. Waste of money don’t come here!!!
Honestly, if you're considering going to the Sugar Factory, it's because you have a tween or young teen begging for it. So one might lower the expectation that the food or service or ambience or anything will be even passable. The food is pretty awful unless you enjoy warm, dry club sandwiches (though the bacon was tasty), overfilled grilled cheese (good cheddar, and the "tomato soup" dip for fries on the side was eaten quickly) on what looked and tasted like damp Texas toast, soggy fries and awful fettuccine alfredo in a sea of sauce (to be fair, the shrimp was not over-cooked). The service was minimal, and we were left with puddles of sticky goo in the center of our table for the entire meal; the fettuccine that was supposed to be with shrimp came with chicken too, and we were charged for both; the drinks appeared fairly quickly, but the meal took forever. But down to what one is really here for: those big goblets of carbonated, candy filled, dry ice smoking mocktails that your kids want on their snapchat. Those are $30. Each. They are huge, and your child may be able to drink 1/4 of it. The candy will be fished out, nibbled, and then spend the remaining luncheon on the table on a napkin, and no, your server will not offer to remove them. The super large hot chocolate will barely be drunk because the toasted marshmallows on top are too filling. And largely, lunch will go uneaten because of both. So if you decide to go, go for the drinks alone, get your parking ticket validated, and eat elsewhere about two hours later. Oh, and prepare yourself for the video onslaught of Hollywood dining at the Sugar Factory in every direction--you cannot avoid the videos, and even the most dedicated non-tv watcher will eventually cave and be mesmerized into submission, probably because it's the worst restaurant experience in Chicago, and your kids and their friends are lolling back in their banquet on a sugar high while you sip lukewarm tap water.
Make sure you have a reservation and be patient on busy nights especially weekends but the drinks are good, dessert even better just a little overpriced on the food but still good as well.
Went for a birthday and the place was pretty busy and energetic atmosphere. Food was normal, desserts were great and the drinks as well. Definitely a sugar rush!
We absolutely loved our visit celebrating our daughter’s 18th bday. Almost everything was perfect... the only complaint? My food came out cold, which was a bummer because it looked delicious. Everyone else had amazing food and the appetizers were yummy.
Great food, great service. Was super loud but still a wonderful experience
Good a little too mainstream
While I usually love the Sugar Factory, myself and three friends dined there on Friday July 5th. We made reservations a month in advance for my birthday. We got there and were seated a few minutes before our reservation time. We were seated at the smallest table possible with four adults and barely had room to move. Once seated not one person came to our table for at least 30 minutes. Not even to bring us water. When the waitress finally did come we ordered and then waited at least another 20-25 minutes for the drinks to be brought over to us. Then the god just a minute after. The food was good as was the drinks we ordered but the waitress still never even came back to check with us. She didn’t even deliver our food to us. I get she may have been having a rough night but we traveled all the way to Chicago for my birthday specifically to come to this restaurant and it was some of the worst service I have ever received. When our food came out there wasn’t even room on the small table for everything and we had to stack plates to eat. I would still like to come back in the future because it is usually my favorite restaurant but it kind of ruined the whole birthday experience for me.
We took our family there one night for dinner because the location in Vegas was VERY kid friendly. Chicago's location was more like a club atmosphere and not the best for kids. Very loud, dark, and warm. We sat on the velvet booth in the backroom and there were questionable stains. Food was good, service was great, but not the environment I'd bring kids to again or a large group.
