Stokehouse St Kilda Beach
Beautiful views, excellent food and an elegant environment embody what you'll find at Stokehouse Restaurant. The restaurant's position on the sea makes it a wonderful haven for fresh seafood. Enjoy sand crab, squid, oysters and a variety of fish dishes with flavorful sauces.
The menu at Stokehouse Restaurant includes local fare such as chicken and grilled beef, with sides that place an emphasis on fresh. Indulge in some pickled beetroot, char-grilled kale or Jap pumpkin as a complement to your meal. Desserts at Stokehouse Restaurant are also worth ordering and you can choose among cheese, chocolate custard, summer berries and other sweets. Pair your meal and dessert with one of several tasty cocktails prepared by skilled bartenders.
I would agree with other reviewers that while food was good, it is overpriced for small portions. The noise level was pretty high, as there was a private event going on behind a curtain that did little to muffle the voices and laughter. We were given one slice of bread a piece after seating, and were not asked if we would like more. The waiter took up our bread plates and the cheese curd, which was very tasty, by the way. Our dinner consisted of the lamb loin and the battered-fried fish and chips, and a side of cocktail potatoes. Food quality was good, but we’ve had better on both dishes elsewhere. Lamb portion was 2 pieces, but i was expecting a little more, but not too surprised. I would call it typical European portion size. We did not have alcohol or any other courses, and still spent more than $100 before tip. Overall, it was not a bad experience, but just didn’t live up to my expectations after it had been recommended to us by a friend.
It was a delightful venue and the food was delicious and well presented. The service was attentive. For us this was a more expensive evening that usual but worth it for a special event to celebrate our 35th Wedding Anniversary.
Expensive I can handle but tiny portion sizes, poorly cooked (raw carrots) and rushed service leaves me hollow. I should have gone to rockpool.
No service care, no one asked during meal or afterwards is everything ok....
Love it! Food, friends, fun and great view and people watching
Had a fabulous seafood meal, wonderful service and great view of the bay. Only criticism is the noise level which had the waiter having to ‘yell’ at our table of two to be heard ! This really needs to be addressed by the owners. Due to this would steer clear unfortunately if taking a large group or if wanting a romantic night out.
Stunning location and a great job done the rebuild. The wine was great. The food was ok. Overpriced for what we were served up.
Stokehouse has always had a great reputation and we were excited to try it. Came away disappointed.
Amazing meal with a great view. I loved the service. Our server was fantastic and so was William the sommelier. Definitely recommend!
I was very disappointed with the menu, the fish and chips come out with only four hand cut chips on the plate with three over cooked battered fish pieces
My starter did not come out with there rest of the group and this meant I was sitting there with no food in front of me for a good amount of time
the drinks were made very average for the amount charged
I love good food and services and happy to pay but not a brand name when I dine
I spent $1000 on the 12 Jan to take some friends a close Family to dine there but will not do it again as there is so much great food in Melbourne
Lovely food and great surroundings. Serrvice was exceptional, my only other comment was the wine list. Whilst extensive in parts I also found it lacking in other areas.
The food and wine were excellent however we were disappointed by the service. A number of the staff did not appear to be familiar with the wines offered by the glass which resulted in incorrect wines being poured (this happened twice - it seemed there was confusion between Sauvignon Blanc and savignin even when we ordered by reference to the producer). The wine pours were also inconsistent which was also a bit disappointing, as there was no indication on the menu as far as we saw that any pours would be less than standard. The people in the black shirts however knew what they were doing. Maybe it was our mistake but we were just disappointed as everything else was great.
Location is fab and the food mostly great. Previously have absolutely loved the food, this time in my opinion some dishes had too much going on and over powered the high quality sea food.
Service was very average - attitude, slow and unattentive.
We enjoyed all aspects of our dining experience. The restaurant was highly recommended to us and did not disappoint.
Amazing and personable service by all the staff. All the dishes are exceptional. Looking forward to go there again.
I’ve lived in St Kilda for forty years and I’ve always loved its diversity especially in dining experiences. So as far as I’m concerned no trip to Melbourne is complete without visiting The Stokehouse as it’s a completely unique and unforgettable indulgence particularly if you’re celebrating some occasion. And Life IS a celebration, isn’t it?
The quality of the food and service was excellent. The only concern was the noise level. I thought the space was overcrowded. Our waiter was attentive and very accommodating. I would prefer to dine in a quieter area in the future. Apart from this I was very impressed.
An outstandingly beautiful location especially good for taking interstate/international guests, the Stokehouse is comfortable, well serviced and elegant. I was filled with nostalgia having been there through many iterations of the SH, the first as a young hippy when it was a barn of a place serving hippy type meals. It has been reborn from the ashes and now is a fabulous place to have a special night out.
Very warm -indeed uncomfortably hot in the restaurant.Great service-pleasant but not outstanding food.Considered expensive -only average for value.
A lovely night with international visitors - showed off the bay sunset beautifully.
Food was not as special as I’d expected, though the desserts were standouts. The sommelier was thoughtful and all the waitstaff were flawless.
Everything was amazing
Staff, food,view and the ambiance
Thank you stock house for this amazing experience. We were with our little one (4.5y) and we felt very confortable. Everyone was super kind and gentle.
First impression wasn’t great. We arrived 10 mins early and the lady at the front was a bit abrupt and said we aren’t actually open till 12 and told us to wait at the bar. Thinking we might be able to order a drink whilst we waited, no we were only asked what we wanted to drink just before we were taken to our table. The menu isn’t that exciting, my husband got the special which wasn’t on the menu, the duck dish was lacking flavour. A bit of a shame considering the venue and it’s location.
One could not argue this is one of the finest establishment in Melbourne. The food and service were spectacular.
One thing to note, the acoustic was terrible, the ambience noice was rather out there...do not bring your 70 years old mother there...as conversation could get very difficult.
Beautiful setting, excellent service and delicious meal. Flawless.
For a one off.
We might have started with a cheap bottle of wine to get going before we ordered food. The sommelier didn’t return to our table after that, not sure if it was because of the cheap wine or not. But the $55 bottle was actually quite good and represented value relative to others on the list.
Didn’t appreciate having to leave due to the scheduling of the table to someone else. It was an wedding anniversary night and we didn’t even have a chance to have desert. It felt a bit rushed.
nice but too noisy with patrons speaking loudly over the top
of background music that wasn’t background
Beautiful setting and everything was done so well. Great food great service, honestly one of the best meals we’ve had!
Excellent food and service and great view of bay. Would highly recommend.
Wonderful service and atmosphere. The food was fabulous. We were treated like returning family members. Thank you once again Stokehouse team.
My husband and I celebrated our 10 years. A man that is very hard to please walked out with a huge smile. We felt very special 🌹
Hi Anna, We are STOKED to hear your review, congratulations on your recent anniversary and we hope to see you again soon. Thanks, Stokehouse.
The most limited menu I’ve ever seen. Very small portion sizes of basic food made out to be “fancy”, and beyond overpriced.
Hi there, Thank you for taking the time to note your experience. It is disappointing to hear your feedback; we will pass it on to our venue team to note for future. Thanks, Stokehouse.
Food was absolutely scrumptious. Delightful new ideas of food combinations like chicken with caviar, crab risotto and tasty raw tuna.
Fantastic food and drinks menu. The staff were impeccable and the service was quick and unobtrusive and the scenery...wow! That said the whole dining experience was soured by the noise level just being too loud. I almost couldnt hear my wife across from me, not the most romantic setting. Also for the prices paid, I'd expected my taste buds to have been blown away (not my ear drums) and my overall experience to be something to rave about for months....unfortunately it wasn't.
Hi Joe, Thank you for noting your recent experience. We apologise for the noise levels that disrupted your meal and will be sure to discuss this issue with our venue team. Thanks, Stokehouse.
I’ve been enjoying The Stokehouse for 20 years and it’s always got a great vibe . The room has the best view in Melbourne. My duck dish was superb and the crab in the shared seafood plate was memorable. The service is efficious but still friendly. Probably best for small groups and not an intimate dinner for two.
Great view, food and service was excellent. Atmosphere was buzzing and my family and I would definitely be going again
The food and service were good but my guests and I will never return to the Stokehouse because of the shocking noise level through our meal. We were sitting at a round table and had to lean in to even speak to the person sitting at the next seat. To speak across the table you had to shout. We eventually stopped talking as it was too difficult. There appeared to be no noise attenuation and the tables were stacked in. I complained to our waiter who said it was very hard for them to even hear patrons requests and generally went home with a headache. Sadly it was $600 not well spent.
Food was amazing! But the service was poor and it took awhile until we were given the drinks menu. Our food took very long, we ordered a table salad which did not arrive and had to remind the waitress. The salad was just a bowl of lettuce leaves. But I was really disappointed in how loud the place was and our table was in the middle of the restaurant and could not hear ourselves talk. What a pity I was really looking forward to having a good birthday dinner.
We were fortunate enough to be seated against the window overlooking the beach and bay.
The food was good and the service was fast also.
It was a nice experience.
Great food and service, needs more vegan options!!!
We enjoyed the service and the food is delicious, well done.
A beautiful view.
The Room is noisy though, It surprised me. I would like to see them address that.
Food and presentation were outstanding and the staff good but the room was just too crowded and very very noisy. We found it almost impossible to hear our server talk about specials. Tables were so close together some of the servers had trouble negotiating the space between them. When there is a dress code why let people in wearing beach shorts and thongs. Don’t mind really as it has that beach vibe but why advertise a dress code in the first place. Think it is a little too casual to demand such prices despite the food being very very good.
On arrival we “found” our way upstairs to the main restaurant. Glorious ocean views from every seat.
Beach luxe definitely describes Stokehouse beautifully-as it’s the best “on offer” but certainly not formal about providing such quality.
We were seated and immediately asked about a drink, we asked to see a drinks menu first.
We took this to mean, if we had a preference in mind-it would be provided. Love that confidence!
Our waiter was lovely as was the sommelier. Other staff were just as good.
Attentive, non evasive and alert to our needs.
Offered advice, and when interest shown, built upon.
The seafood platter (not on the menu but recommended) was heavenly as were the fresh oysters! Perfectly seasoned, super fresh, well balanced flavours and superb quality. Seasonal too.
The main (the wagu and vegetable sides) we shared were also perfect.
Cocktails were exquisite! Generous and bursting with flavour. Again the quality of alcohol and mixers were noticed and appreciated.
We believe we got what we paid for, perhaps more as we couldn’t fault anything, and left with a tour of the cellar with the Sommelier, full happy tummies and light hearts.
