Stokehouse St Kilda Beach
Beautiful views, excellent food and an elegant environment embody what you'll find at Stokehouse Restaurant. The restaurant's position on the sea makes it a wonderful haven for fresh seafood. Enjoy sand crab, squid, oysters and a variety of fish dishes with flavorful sauces.
The menu at Stokehouse Restaurant includes local fare such as chicken and grilled beef, with sides that place an emphasis on fresh. Indulge in some pickled beetroot, char-grilled kale or Jap pumpkin as a complement to your meal. Desserts at Stokehouse Restaurant are also worth ordering and you can choose among cheese, chocolate custard, summer berries and other sweets. Pair your meal and dessert with one of several tasty cocktails prepared by skilled bartenders.
Sensational food and service. Will defiantly be coming back and recommending to friends.
What a great dining experience we had! A special acknowledgement to the sommelier.
Personable and attentive service, beautiful food and beautiful setting
The location is amazing. Easy too.
The food is okay. Not enough variety on the menu especially for non seafood eaters. Entree is too small. Dessert was lovely.
I really enjoy this place, service and food always exceeds expectations
Lovely food with fantastic service. Beautiful afternoon views into the bay and a lovely night with my wife. Highly recommended for those special nights out.
Amazing restaurant. Stepping out of the elevator on the first floor, you are welcomed by fantastic views of the bay, the sandy beach below and the beautiful, soft furnishes inside. The food and wine options are superb. I highly recommend this place.
Wife’s birthday - service is second to none.
We used to go to The Stokehouse before it was unfortunately destroyed by fire. Living outside Melb. we had not had a chance to go since it was rebuilt. However on my 70th birthday my wife and I booked a table asking if it could be by the window as it was a special occasion. When we arrived we were greeted by a friendly staff member and shown to a very nice table by the window as requested. The extensive menu was explained to us in detail. We ordered four courses which were exquisite. Certainly fine dining and more. The wine waiter suggested a Pinot Noir we had not tried before and it was lovely. We look forward to returning soon. Excellent experience.
Stokehouse is our go-to restaurant in Melbourne for special occasions. Almost always great.
Just one thing happened, otherwise 5 stars all the way. We ordered a dish that cost $56 - it is a Morton Bay Bug dish. The serving was so tiny. We complained and were told that it was almost the end of the season for MBB! Ok - then take it off the menu - or charge less.. Easy!
All the same, another special occasion and we will got back...
food was great, view was awesome, would recommend the Stokehouse for sure
thank you very much
Food was really good however for the value of the food the service was terrible.
It was high expectations that we booked an anniversary dinner upstairs at The Stokehouse; having not been since the fire and rebuild. The staff were fantastic, the service impeccable and the fitout is impressive with the great views across Port Phillip Bay. Unfortunately the food was average at best. The best part of our dining was from the raw bar, with the hiramasa kingfish sensational. After that it was all downhill with the prawn taco being overly strong and drowning in avocado puree, the fried chicken and caviar being overly salty with an awful crumb on the chicken. For mains the squid ink spaghetti was overly strongly fishy with the spaghetti being served almost like crisp noodles. The grass fed sirloin was fine but it was a steak that could be had at half a dozen pubs around town with nothing memorable about it.
Our wait staff were so good that it was the only reason to leave a tip but otherwise it was a major disappointment.
Lunch on a Monday - a relatively small number of diner's, so noise not a problem, although dining area design and materials likely to create a noise issue when busy, with tables near kitchen a particular problem. Chairs hard and not encouraging one to linger. The purpose of the lunch was for a birthday and the attention, consideration and service was outstanding, and likely to have been so even without the mention of the occasion. The food was very good, but in disappointing quantities in view of the price (e.g one Morton Bay Bug with a single mouthful of flesh for $45). Desserts were mainly icecream based and not particularly enticing or special. Good wine list. Had a good time but no special reason to return.
Excellent food and location, drinks very expensive though.
Had friends visiting from NZ. Stokehouse is a standout 'to impress' restaurant. Stunning location, interesting menu and great service. Its not cheap and neither should it be. The bill is well offset by everything else it offers.
Great seafood in a setting perfectly overlooking St Kilda beach.
For me, the taste and flavours of my main dish (Squid ink spaghetti, vongole, shellfish sauce, garlic) were quite unpleasant. I've had this dish several times in Italy and your version had a flavour similar to uncleaned prawns i.e. head and entrails. I sent the dish back and was not charged for it - thank you.
The raw bar dishes we had were excellent but very small portions - I though nouvelle cuisine had died a death years ago !
Great experience - beautiful venue, friendly staff and delicious food!
location was great but the value for money and menu was average
Fantastic family dinner tonight. Exceptional service and great food, highly recommend
Beautiful setting and food is good but certainly not amazing. Great wine list and sommelier was a great help without being at all pushy. Service was just ok, arrived at 11:50 for a 12:00 booking and was told it was closed till 12. Then when I came back at 12:10 the first thing they said was they needed the table back at 2. Had two courses but no time for desert. So all up a good venue but not an amazing experience.
Will give it another go but will not rush. Main meal variety poor...my main meal fish and chips was average over cooked. Many staff just going thru motions.
We ordered oysters asked for lemon which never came then entrees came out at same time and staff wanted to change plates whilst we still eating...no apologies just stood there whilst we finished oysters....
Outstanding! Beautiful views across the bay, service was great and food was even better. Every aspect well executed. Look forward to the next time.
Perfect in every way
Stokehouse dining room is an excellent experience that delivers quality food and service in a relaxed atmosphere.
The food can be shared easily and there is enough of a selection of beautiful dishes that ensure there is something for everyone. Staff are warm and welcoming and have good knowledge of the wines and food
Stokehouse is fast becoming one of our favourite "go to" restaurants
Would recommend for occasion dining - been going there since 1998, but since reopening kitchen has lost some of its pizazz factor. Moreton Bay Bug overpowered by unnecessary sauce. Market fish (Mahi Mahi) was ordinary. The raw bar however was excellent, inc the seared tuna in sesame, as are desserts. Service very good.
views, service and food were outstanding!
Perfect location for sundown at St Kilda with delicious food and wine
We took some guests who were over forom the United Kingdom and they loved the location, view and food. Thouroughly recommend the Stokehouse.
Stunning location, great ambiance, amazing food, superb cocktails and extensive wine list, fantastic service. Bloody expensive, but totally worth it.
The ambience, views and service were great. I enjoy eating in nice restaurants and prepared to pay for quality, however I did not walk away thinking the food was of a level equal to the cost. I would however recommend Pontoon (downstairs) for a more casual drink and wood fired pizza. In any event we enjoyed the views of the sunset and experience overall.
Superb food, very friendly and attentive staff. Beautiful restaurant and outlook.
Was very disappointed in the quality of the food, considering the expensive costs. Had a steak for $55 came with nothing extra on the side, quality of steak was really average- could have purchased a similar quality of meat at Woolworths (had fat on it). Staff told us as soon as we were seated that they had another booking for our table a 8pm - this wasn’t said when I booked online - with just under a 1/2 hour before 8pm they came to the table to remind us we had to leave - felt a bit unwanted and we certainly spent a fair amount of money. Also we got the bill and they overcharged us for the wine - luckily we picked up on that and made them correct it. Beautiful spot and lovely looking restaurant but a bit pretentious in the service and attitude. Not great value
Sadly, having been regulars at the Stokehouse since it opened decades ago, the service and the food were simply not up to scratch.
We arrived for a long languid lunch and had a lovely time on the balcony. The problems started once we arrived at our table.
The service was very poor and the food quality was worse.
- 20 minutes to take our order after receiving menus
- Bread was delivered to the table after the entree was half eaten.
- Portion size of entree was minuscule
- two bread plates were removed when clearing the entree, despite bread remaining
- mains were delivered less than 10 minutes after finishing the entree
- worse, one of our party went to the bathroom and the food was plated in their absence (this is OK in a cheap and busy restaurant but this is neither)
- one main course was described as 'grilled crustaceans' but was a single Morton Bay Bug placed upside down and the meat cut-up and swimmingly in some vile looking and tasting green sauce that looked liked it had been scooped out of Menindee Lakes recently.
- the fish and chips were very disappointing. The heavily battered fish was resting on top of the large cut triple cooked chips that in turn were resting on the tartare sauce - here's a free tip for the chef, if you triple your chips to get them fantastically crispy, don't place them in a wet sauce - surprisingly (for some) they go soggy.
- we had ordered a bottle of change to go with desert. Our waiter enquired if we would like to order some other drinks, once our glasses had run dry. While he went to get a drink menu another waiter came over and topped our glasses up with the half a bottle that remained.
Sadly we won't be returning. The Stokehouse had been our 'go-to' place for decades but it needs an service and kitchen overhaul before any of us would be tempted back.
The food was disappointing especially the snacks.
Great setting and our server was very good.
Beautiful outlook and great food but was a bit noisy for Sunday lunch
This is only the second time we've been to Stokehouse since the rebuild, the last time was in June 2018, and the experience then was exceptional, making it my equal first favourite restaurant in Melbourne for a special occasion. Experience No. 2 did not disappoint. When we arrived, they acknowledged us by 'Welcome back'. I made a special mention of the waiter who served us on the last visit as being one of the key elements of our great experience over and above the exceptional food, service and ambience. This waiter, although he didn't serve us this time, made a point of coming over and engaging with us - he was so charming but genuine. This second visit has just cemented this iconic restaurant as one of the best in Melbourne. If you haven't experienced it, make sure you do. If visitors to Melbourne ask you where they can have an exceptional and authentic Melbourne experience that showcases our City - Stokehouse has to be the answer
Special of the day 1 Moreton Bay Bug $48...nothing else on the plate and poorly explained by staff. And a rather lean bug at that.
Dessert Coconut Rice Pudding not bad.
No sign out front. Hard to locate and meet taxi. Great sunset.
