Contemporary American
Located in the Union Market neighborhood, the second outpost of Joe Carroll’s popular NYC restaurant aims to bring some of the laid back vibes of Brooklyn to Washington, DC. St. Anselm is an American tavern devoted to the pleasures of grilled meats and great ingredients simply cooked. While steak is a specialty, the creativity of Chef Marjorie Meek-Bradley doesn’t stop there. Delicious food, eclectic wines (some on tap), and classic cocktails set the tone for a great experience. Paired with friendly service in an unpretentious setting adorned with quirky décor, dining at St Anselm is the total package.

My wife and I had:
Cucumber salad - light and fresh
deviled eggs - more rich, but crab on top was good
venison chop - very good
butcher steak - smaller than I expected but was good (asked for medium and got medium rare but no big deal
mushroom side - went well with steak
cauliflower - highlight of the meal - massive portion
carrot cake for desert - walnuts and raisins check

We took my mother-in-law and brother-in-law here the day before they had to shut down the dining room bc of coronavirus and I was impressed with the level of care taken to make sure our experience was still really good. Not only was the food delicious (as always!) but the server was still really friendly and offered lots of suggestions and it was clear cleaning measures were being taken. We love St. Anshelm!

St Anselm really redeemed itself. The brunch was spot on. The king crab omelet, best brunch item in DC. Absolutely superb

Wow! My wife, daughter and I, had a superb experience from start to finish. We were greeted warmly on arrival and seated immediately (we had a reservation) and our server came over as we were still settling in. The food was delicious. We had the blue crab deviled eggs, cinnamon bread (huge portion), chipped beef and butcher’s steak. We loved our visit and will be back.

All in all, 4/4.5 star rating in my opinion! I went with my boyfriend for a night out. Our waitress was very helpful and attentive. I liked the atmosphere; it's a unique combination of classy/bougie speakeasy meets American tavern meets rustic old cabin... food was very good; nothing that stood out among all of the rival DC restaurants except for the cauliflower, but that doesn't mean that everything else we ate was not very good.

For three people, we ordered a $180 60-oz. ax handle of aged steak. It was tasty, but I've never received a fattier piece of steak in my life. More than 30-40% of what we received was bone or fat. The three of us were trying to shave small pieces of beef away from the fat....and I doubt that any of us had more than 8-10 oz. of real beef to eat.

Nice ambiance. Good service. The rest of the side dishes were good. If I go again, I will not order the "shared" axe handle and will instead order my own meal.

I would recommend the restaurant, but not the axe handle ribeye.

Love the food and the ambience. That salmon collar is to die for and the carrot cake is hands down the BEST in D.C.

Great ambiance but the good went service were okay. Had high hopes for this place. The lamb tartare was interesting but would have been much better with baguette and fewer currants.

Overall it was a great time. Went there for brunch and my only critique would be the bacon was way too fatty. Also the rum punch bowl was a bit of a waste of money. Fun idea but it wasn't the best presentation as the punch bowl is huge and took up a large amount of the table. Also, the rum punch is very herbal and can be a bit overwelming to chug a whole bowls worth even for 4 people.

The food and service were excellent we ate our way through the menu the only annoying thing was the noise and people hanging on top of us in the bar while waiting to be seated. I had great octopus liver pate steak creamed spinach and awesome malted ice cream.

Service from the whole team was great. Food was outstanding. Hostess was a little clueless at how to get us settled initially and my steak was a little under cooked. Ultimately all was forgiven because everything else was fantastic. Attentive, knowledgeable and passionate staff guided us through a memorable meal. Thank you!

We had a wonderful experience. We indicated on our reservation that one of our diners has a hearing issue and even though the restaurant was loud on a Friday night the staff found us a relatively quiet table and was incredibly helpful. Thank you!

Our visit to St. Anselem was amazing. The food is superb and the service was extraordinary. The staff knew we were celebrating a special occasion and sent us a complimentary round of champaign and dessert. The servers were super attentive. The sommelier checked on us frequently. We could not have been happier with the experience. We will be back!

Food was absolutely fantastic! Plenty to take home. Very extensive and delicious wine menu, going from wines on tap, wines in cans and half/full bottle of wine selection. Our server was great, she was very knowledgeable, we are definitely going back!

Our party of 3 had a great time!
We started with some lovely grilled oysters which were delicate and delicious.
Then we each ordered a ribeye which was simply grilled with salt and pepper. Each person’s was cooked to our own temp request and everyone felt like theirs was done correctly! We shared steak fries and creamed spinach which were both very tasty. We were pleased with our experience and our food. The only thing at all that was a challenge was it was a bit noisy so difficult to hold a conversation without raising your voice. But I’d definitely come back again!

Went for brunch on Saturday, drinks were good, food was good and plentiful. Monkey
Bread good for starter which we shared. Service was attentive and very pleasant. Enough going on such that the antics of a six year old girl went essentially unnoticed

Went for brunch. Buttermilk biscuits were warm and pillowy. Beef tartare unexpectedly citrusy but delicious. The main event, the ax handle rib eye, was fantastic. Properly grilled, fatty, and nicely presented. All washed with a glass of Tempranillo blend. A great dining experience.
