As the name of South Place Hotel’s ground floor restaurant might suggest, South Place Chop House takes inspiration from London’s traditional chop houses – marrying good food with engaging service and a great atmosphere. The venue has been given a makeover, with stacks of classic copper pans, artwork by Thorbjørn Andersen and a choice of intimate banquette seating as well as larger, communal tables.

At the weekend, this ground floor space becomes a social spot with bottomless brunches on Saturday & Sunday with free-flowing bubbles on option. Sunday also offers succulent Roast Specials.

The cooking is skilled and gutsy. A refinement of the conventional 18th Century Chop House style, it’s perfect for contemporary tastes and sensibilities, food you return to: tasty, satisfying and wholesome.

The Chop House is my prefered location fo a City lunch. The food is always outstanding, the service is quick and friendly, the noise is moderate and there is plenty of space between tables.

Informal atmosphere which I like but with good quality food. Experienced waiters with good food knowledge whose recommendations we followed. The food arrived in a timely manner, was well presented and tasted delicious. Highly recommend for dinner with friends.

Nice meal, nothing too special but horribly slow for a business lunch. We chased our food having waited at least 20 minutes after ordering and it arrived ten minutes later. I think they forgot our order. Two courses and coffee took 1 hour 40 minutes which is too long for a business lunch and I had to leave my guest at the table drinking coffee. Let's hope this was a one 0ff. my only warning is that this is as noisy as a restaurant gets when full.

Food was ok but not great, however service was poor and considering the restaurant was close to empty was far from acceptable.
No plates provided with main course
Main course served while starters were still on the table
Twice we had to visit the bar to request more drinks.
No option provided for desert or coffee

Whilst the food and service are both excellent, the ambience is not to my liking. Its a primary school (cheap) type environment ideally inexpensive for developers to set up and acceptable to the youngsters who wouldnt know a proper five star hotel from a Travelodge!!

As always the service & food was excellent.
Daniela our waiter was very attentive and she made our experience special by offering birthday plate to my friend.
Highly recommend the pork chop, it tasted really good and it was a massive portion.
My friend had the vegan burger & she loved it.

Business lunch. I come here regularly, in part for convenience due to location and part due to predictably of decent food and good service. This lunch was sadly spoiled by a large group booking which killed off any chance of conversation. Not the restaurant's fault. Service still very good. Food likewise - though it's a pity the pork belly is no longer on the menu!

We were very well looked after by our young waitress and the barman took care to explain the drinks to us and made sure we chose the right red wine and port. The bang band chicken wings and steaks were delicious. We had another waitress to take the bill at the end whereby an error was made in overcharging us, she sorted it out once I showed her and she apologised. That wouldn’t put me off coming again it’s a cosy restaurant and bar and we loved the drinks and food. It wasn’t overpriced for a 5 star hotel and the location.

Visited today for Sunday brunch. We were very disappointed with the quality of the food. We had steak sandwich, the sauce didn’t taste nice and there was way too much sauce to enjoy the meat. The Carmel waffle sauce was burnt.
Also the extra £5 for each main on top of the the £22.5 2 course meal is very misleading and unfair. Don’t call it £22.5 if you’re adding extra for specific mains, regardless if it is mentioned or not in the menu.

The food was terrible and I had to give it a star to get this far in the review.
It was over salted and one on my table found it inedible so this was taken of the bill.
The two of us that had the roast thought the dinner was basic to say the least. I requested my beef well done and it was blood red inside and done outside making it very unappealing. My beef was thick and my partners thin like paper.
The deserts we had no issue with.
Considering it was a set meal price and one meal was removed the drinks are outrageous as for 5 the bill came to £281.00
I have eaten in D and D restaurants before and always defer to the New Street Griil.
The meal was a treat for my partner and children to celebrate something and we left hurriedly as we were all disappointed and ended up else where so one of the group could have a plate of chips !!!!!!

Good to see Sunday Brunch back but with a Roast option for traditionalists. Excellent waiter who created a bespoke menu option in negotiation with the chef. Very helpful and appreciated.

The staff were lovely but the Super-food Salad was very disappointing. It consisted of a huge pile of quinoa with a couple of mint leaves and a few pomegranate seeds. When asked for some vinaigrette to liven it up, we were offered a bottle of malt vinegar and then a small pot of Balsamic glaze.

Went for a meal on Tuesday evening.
Great atmosphere and staff friendly, went for the set menu deal of two courses for £25, the food was nice but I do not think I would go with the set menu again.
The terrace bar on the 7th floor is great and I iamgine would be lovely when the weather is nice and the cover is taken off.
I would go back but maybe try the a la carte menu instead.

I was expecting an experience like I had at the Angler which is at the same venue and unfortunately came away disappointed. The lack of diversity of the menu was made worse when the one item I really wanted had run out. While our waiter was lovely, our order was messed up slightly, therefore, not the Sunday lunch experience I was expecting.

The stand out part of the lunch was the very attentive but unobtrusive service. Food was really well presented and tasty. Bottomless bubbles was just that! The only negative was the noise level. It was so loud that having a conversation was tricky

My experience was shocking.
The food was dreadful and presentation shocking.
The large party of guests on one table in the middle of the restaurant added to the bad experience.
I would never have thought this jotel/ restaurant would have allowed a table of around 20 people .
Being gluten free the option offered was not what I would class as acceptable.
The option given was still frozen in the middle.
I would not go again

The Chop House is a good spot for a business lunch or dinner. The noise levels are not too elevated but equally the buzz allows conversation without feeling too overheard. The staff are attentive and the menu has a good selection for most diet biases. There is nothing particularly outstanding on the menu, which tends to the plain, but equally the plain food they have is done to a decent quality level. The Superfood salad needs a little more pizazz but the josper grill and grilled fish dishes are very solid as are the steaks. Not spectacular but certainly reliably safe.

Had a fantastic bottomless brunch at South Place Chop House with 4 friends for my birthday. The food was absolutely gorgeous - the best eggs benedict I'd ever had - and that steak... oh my!!!
The room did become quite loud towards the end of our brunch with lots of big tables on the bottomless prosecco - but probably to be expected! Would definitely go back again and would absolutely recommend!
