We went to Soma Grille for Thanksgiving Dinner, and we were thrilled with how delicious all of the food was! We had heard from friends that the food at Soma was outstanding, so we chose this beautiful restaurant as our dinner place for the holiday, and it did not disappoint! We now want to go back and try the Coquettes and other items we didn't get to try. Also, the drinks were really beautifully made, and SO TASTY! We thought they were a great value at about $10 each for a Paloma, which was the best one I've ever had. The atmosphere was lovely - in the Simsbury 1820s house, which is gorgeous, old style, hotel with a very creative use of space. We didn't sit at the bar, but we want to come back and have a more casual experience there because the bar was just a lovely ambience. The parking was plentiful, and it was easy to get to. From the moment we walked in, everyone was smiling, friendly, and went out of their way to be helpful.
We visited Soma Grille on Thanksgiving Day. There was a prix fixe menu so we did not get to try anything on the regular daily menu. The meal all overall was very god although the sides were a little cool for my taste. That said, the entrees were very good and the deserts were as well.
The portions were a little small, but the food was good. Felt it was a lot of money for the portion size.
Our first time there. We just had appetizers but the food was delicious. Service was very good. Bar was a bit noisy but we closed the door and that helped. Would go back again. Dinner entrees looked delicious
Great food at reasonable prices
There were 9 of us. The appetizers were scrumptious. My linguine and shrimp had no flavor and it seemed that it was put together quickly and was served last. We should all have been served at the same time and we were not. The rest of the meals were very good especially the Mac&Cheese: yummy.
The kitchen was out of Lobster and about 4 other dishes on the menu. I would recommend it since most of the meals were good and it was unfortunate that the menu was being converted to the winter selections. It was cold when we arrived in the room and asked that the heat be turned up. The music was too loud and very not very soothing. We asked that it be turned off and it was eventually.
We were in the downstairs room and the noise level was high. It also felt like an extra room, rather than being another room in the restaurant. Food and service were excellent but that room needs some love.
Good food, interesting selections, and fantastic service. Definitely worth trying.
Overall, a great experience and we will definitely go to Soma again. They have a fantastic menu and are able to offer many gluten free options (which was fantastic for me as I have Celiac). Our food was beautifully presented, flavorful and hot. One little blip, my husband’s green beans were extremely undercooked, tough and had an odd texture. Desserts were delish and it was a lovely evening...service was spot on but never intrusive.
The caesar salad was the best I have ever had. Spouse said his clam chowder could have been a bit warmer. Salmon was outstanding and both that and the steak were done exactly as ordered. Server, Denise was attentive without hovering - the perfect balance
My actual rating would be 4.5. It better than a 4 but not quite a 5. I love the building and we have always like our meals. Two members of our party really liked the bone in swordfish. It's a quiet, relaxing dining experience, not too stuffy, just right.
After two visits we are most definitely fans. We’ve had the same thing both times (next time we’ll branch out) and although the potatoes and veg were a bit over salted, still delicious. Our waiter was excellent, attentive and fun to talk to. Look forward to our next visit!
This was our second time dining at Soma Grille, had the sword fish chop the first time which was very good and went with the paella this time, that was off the hook!! Great portion sizes and priced well. We'll be back again and again!
Made reservations and when we arrived the host was very frazzled. Told us he’d only been there two weeks. After waiting a few minutes we were seated downstairs in a renovated basement. Three large parties and us! We were excited for our evening out and a nice bottle of wine but it felt like we were dining in a church basement. Attention was put on the large parties in the room. No ambiance, no soft music, chairs were old and uncomfortable!
Food was okay. This was not a full experience and we will not be back.
It was our first time visiting this restaurant and the experience was wonderful. Not only was the food delicious and innovative but the service we received from our server (Cheryl) was wonderful. We will definitely go back again.
Great food, good service and the food was out so quickly and perfectly cooked!
The food, atmosphere and the service were great.
My steak was done perfectly and the presentation was perfect.
Dinner at Soma was better than we could have imagined. The food was delicious, the drinks were great, and the wait staff was helpful. We will definitely be coming back!
Outstanding service on a busy Friday evening, noise level acceptable for reunion dinner with very old friends from Germany. Menu and seasonings outstanding, even to the spread accompanying pre-dinner rolls. Highly recommend scallops and paella, also perfect medium-rare steak. Cheers!
It was like an average Saturday dinner out. Nothing was done to make the occasion special, even though we marked it was our anniversary on the reservation. Our reservation was for 7:15. When we were seated our server informed us that they were already out of several items. It was nice but not so amazing that we’d go back again.
After having a great lunch of lobster rolls at Soma Grille last month, we were excited to try it for dinner. Sadly, the experience was disappointing. Our group of four was seated in the basement with two other parties. I understand that the main dining area was at capacity on Saturday at 7:00 pm, but the basement had no ambiance, no atmosphere or decor. Three of us ordered soup while the fourth ordered a salad specifically asking the waitress to bring it at the same time as the soups. Well, the soups were served, and the salad came out eight minutes later.
Two of us ordered salmon entrees. The waitress asked how it should be done. Our reply was "cooked all the way through", and she replied "medium well". When the entrees were served, the salmon was red inside; not cooked all the way through. The waitress took the salmon off both plates leaving the dishes with the sides and returned several minutes later with the salmon properly done as originally requested.
I will say that I was pleased with my paella, and the soups were very good, but that did not make up for the service and undercooked salmon. We all felt that we should have been offered at least complementary desserts if not comping the two salmon dinners. Granted, we did not ask to speak with a manager, but we would have expected the waitress to send him over considering the issues. We had hoped for a better experience.
We are celebrating our anniversary, and I wanted to give Soma a try as the girls had been for lunch on the deck of the Simsbury 1820 House B&B. When we arrived, we were told that our table on the deck was ready, however they already had a large group “partying” on the deck, so we chose to sit inside. This may have been our first mistake, but unfortunately not our last, as we stayed for the entire experience, which was worse than our average rating!
Our waitress wasn’t present for the majority of the evening, from greeting us, to taking our drink and food order, or follow up...Food Service from the kitchen was a failure, as the server placed the wrong order in front of us, and then took it away only to bring it back to the table next to us (again incorrectly) and arguing with their waitress that the ticket had our table number and her name. When our meals were finally delivered, the tables on either side were already served even though they were seated and ordered after us...my special fish dinner was “over cooked”, which is and always will be unacceptable! Prior to service, the manager/owner came to the table next to us with their server “apologizing” for the mix up on service, but never once asked or apologized to us for this error, which started & ended with us, or any type of recognition at all? To end this meal our waitress wanted to comp a dessert, which we really wouldn’t have ordered but decided to appease her ordering the Creme Brûlée...sadly this was not very good either.
In closing, we are most disappointed in the fact that this is a new restaurant that came in to the Historic B&B, when “Metro Bis” moved down the street to another historic site...we usually will always give second and third chances, but don’t know if we can afford to do this with Soma Grill.
We sat at the bar, Jeff and Renee were working and terrific. Jeff really knows his wine!
Wonderful rib entree, for my husband and I had a crab cake and chopped salad. Portions were very good. A 3 piece band was playing in the bar, soft jazz, OUTSTANDING.
We will be regulars!
Our experience was outstanding in all respects, we were very pleased with all aspects of our dinner.
Thanks Richard!! We really appreciate it!!
Good food, good wine, but very noisy. We'd made a reservation, but they'd been 'very busy' and had to sit at the bar - owner bought us a drink, nice! - and table was ready in about 15 min. We enjoyed the evening and will return, but wish the noise level could be decreased, a lot.
Thank you for the honest review. We are working on the sound deadening devices now and expect them in the near future. Best, Carlos
Decided to check out Soma Grille based on friends recommendations. We had a wonderful server- Roberta! She was attentive and knowledgeable We enjoyed the charcuterie board and croquette as an appetizer I LOVED the beet salad which my husband and I split. I also loved the short rib that I ordered based on the recommendation of the owner who was very visible and friendly. My husband had the paella which he was not thrilled with due to lack of flavor. We were too full to order dessert. Overall we really enjoyed our night and will go back again. It’s a great location and includes outdoor seating and a great looking bar with seating.
Thank you for the feedback!! We look forward to seeing you soon!!
Went for the Stony Creek beer dinner. The food was fantastic and the staff was great. Will definitely be back.
Thank you very much for joining us for the Beer Dinner! We look forward to seeing you again! Best Chris
Service slow. I had to remind waitress about my drink order. When entree came it was wrong. Because it was so slow I didn’t even bother telling her. Experience was ridiculous
Hi Williams2, Our apologies. I would invite you to give us another try. We need to hear all of the good criticism as well as the bad. We will review this with the staff and make improvements. Thanks, Chris
We were all very pleased with the food and the presentation.
Our waitress was very attentive and helpful! The hostess greeted us with warmth as well. Great evening!
Thank you Easter!!
I like the remodel and the lobby bar is nice. However the food was just mediocre.
Hi AllTheFoodThatsFitToEat, Thanks for the review! We are currently working on our new Fall menu that will be spectacular!! Thanks, Chris
Terrible first visit.
There was no host upon arrival. We waited for >20 minutes and no wait staff came.
After I found someone and told them we wanted to order (because we had other things scheduled for the day), she asked if we wanted to have our orders in To Go boxes
Food was average ...at best
Don’t plan repeat visits here
Our apologies for not meeting the mark. We have addressed your concerns with our staff and making daily improvements. Thanks! Chris
Had a great lunch on the patio. My filet was one the the best I’ve had. My wife loved the corn chowder. Lovely little spot to relax and enjoy a meal with friends. It’s worth visiting if you are anywhere close by.
Pork was very good. Scallops - too much sauce; overwhelms taste, Recommend butter/lemon.
Food was less than satisfactory. The linguini dish had too much olive oil and was over powering with garlic. Overall, pretty tasteless. Although the beef short ribs were tender, the smoked potato mash was too strong and the brown color was somewhat unpleasant to look at. Menu was pretty limited. I would expand it. The waitress was very nice.
We were celebrating our wedding anniversary and had not been to this relatively new restaurant in the 1820 house. I was very happy with the paella which you can often only get for 2 people. My husband had the beef filet which he really enjoyed. We had a moderately priced wine which was a great wine - Brecciarolo Velenosi which was good with both entrees. We will definitely go back.
Very enjoyable evening on the porch
Beautiful view. Exciting menu. Great first visit.
Ordered the crab cakes and was a bit disappointed with the flavor. Next time I will order the muscles for lunch. Service and ambiance was delightful.
Great food. Huge portions. Four of us had dinner and we all loved everything. I checked out the happy hour menu and great eats and drinks including cocktails. I can’t wait to try happy hour. Staff and service was incredible. Chef and Manager(owner?) both stopped by our table checking on food and service. Highly recommend. Beautiful setting.
First of all...Nina was the most personable and friendly waitress we have had in a LONG LONG LONG time! She took great care of us at the restaurant and had awesome recommendations for things to do in the area as well. The restaurant had a lovely, modern-rustic atmosphere and the indoor seating was not overly loud (which is something we always pay attention to). Overall, we had a great experience and would definitely return should we be in the area again.
