The bustling Grill at ‘Smiths’ of Smithfield is a 4-minute walk from Farringdon Tube Station.
It was a nice meal but grilled chicken was a bit over cooked. The pork belly starter was great.
Too noisy to hear my dinner guest
I have been here before for lunch which is why we booked, but this time we booked for Friday evening. Unfortunately it just wasn’t as good this time, the service was generally good but we had to wait for the mains and some items we had ordered weren’t brought to the table. Croquettes for starters were great, the steak was ok but not really as good compared to previous trips.
Decent meal with attentive service.
It took over an hour for our food at lunch time. I notified the manager we needed to leave soon to get back to work and she said she'd check on it. A surly waitress then came over and informed me she had tried to take our order faster but we hadn't been ready. It was confrontational and rude. When the food finally arrived the chicken dishes were stone cold but we didn't bother to complain - there was no time. The pork turned up a lot later than everyone else's food and then when my colleague cut into it, the meat was raw. We complained again. The pork was taken off the bill, and they did take off the service charge and add a discount. But my colleague had no lunch and the whole meal was ruined.
Steaks and wine selection excellent.
Over rated and over priced. Absolutely no ambience poor service food quality awful. Supposed to be a birthday treat was a birthday nightmare
Great steak, although quite expensive for a restaurant in the heart of the meat market but they did offer a lunch special which also had a steak option for £22.50 for 2 courses.
Managers could have dressed up a bit nicer, it looked like they just rolled out of bed, however, the waitress was dressed very appropriately.
Fab food and great service. Never disappointed
Enjoyed this place, and had wanted to visit for a while. We booked on a sunny Monday, so it wasn’t very busy.
I went here the week before and have a great meal. Service was great, food was amazing so decided to go back with a couple of friends the week after. It was like a different place. Service was really slow and the food was poor.
For a restaurant that specialises in steak, I was surprised when my sirloin turned up medium to well, when I asked for medium rare and was quite tough. The steak knives also felt blunt. Amazing space but basics let SOS down.
A lack of diners in the room meant that the waiting staff were overly attentive. It was irritating for me and my guest as we kept getting interrupted. In the end we had to ask to be left alone...even that wasn’t enough!
The food was not memorable. Portion sizes were adequate not generous. Overall ambience was ok as the sounds from a private party downstairs drifted around the grill room.
They are not quite Hawksmoore but they do offer a straightforward no non-sense menu, including a good choice of sides/starters/puddings. I went with my friend and tried their larger 28-day aged cuts (Scottish beef) and we really enjoyed the steak.
Initial service was good but unfortunately it was the lady’s first day so knew very little of the menu and struggled to comprehend us & take our order. A little confusion with whose steak was whose as the senior server didn’t seem to know which was which. In the end I and my client played pass the fillet steak until we were happy. Probably gone downhill under the Young’s ownership. £189 for 4 business steaks, no wine inc service. Perhaps time to start looking elsewhere for value and better quality. Average.
been a staple in my Clerkenwell dining venues for c. 20 years. Had a bit of a dodgy patch c. 6 or 7 years ago but now back at it's best. Never tire of it. Everyone always finds something they like.
Extremely poor service.
Disappointing. Food was ok but service was terrible. I tried to get a wiater's attention and he just stared right through me.

The food was absolutely amazing, the best steaks we’ve ever had. The service however was very poor. The waiter tried to clear our drinks half full, this happened twice! Just a rude and not very friendly service whatsoever! Will definitely come back for the food but front of house needs a definite attitude change!
Probably do not go to Smiths on a Friday or Saturday night if you want to talk to your people. We booked a table in the restaurant on the 2nd floor - but the music from the two bars beneath was insane!! Food was good - not amazing - but solidly good. I ordered a sirloin steak medium rare - it came well done but they did another one for me pretty quickly. The others in the party felt the food was also solid. The service was alright - but a little disorganized. It seemed like a few people were attending to us - sometimes we got too much attention and sometimes we waited a bit. I'd go back - but mid-week or for brunch.
Waited too long for service but I guess that’s as a result of understaffed, the staff there were excellent and the food was Devine
Food, atmosphere and our server were all great but let down by a really long wait for the food to arrive.
There was nothing wrong with the food, nor was it a stand out at that price hence the 3 star rating. The service, whilst friendly, was incredibly slow and for that reason I think you can find other restaurants in the area for a similar price that have either better food and/or better service.
The sheer longevity of smiths is all the period you need that this is a class act . Also fine dining on top level, kind of bistro in mid level where we ate this time then burgers and beers in ground mean there is something for every taste and pocket. Great part of town too.
Had a fantastic evening food was superb and everybody thoroughly enjoyed the occasion.
Fabulous dinner, great service. We had a baby with us and staff were great. Will be back for sure.
What is it with restaurants whose online menu is completely different to what was offered to us on the day, have contacted Smiths direct but they haven't bothered to reply, very disappointing & very misleading!
Smiths is just a good solid restaurant and I prefer the Grill over the other floors. it was very quite that lunchtime which was great for the business meeting we had.
Had a reservation in the restaurant upstairs away from the main bar. We had a couple of cocktails during happy hour in the main bar before dinner. Great cocktails! The food was delicious and the portion sizes generous and service very good, without being intrusive. Hope to visit again soon.
Food was good but thought that the service was a bit inattentive. Given that this this was a Thursday night and the dining room was not busy I would have expected better.
We were a group of 6 on a Tuesday evening. All started okay, despite not having our booking (via open table) and having to wait for table. Downhill from there. The wine we wanted and several meals ‘out of stock’ at 7pm, because there is a ‘large booking tomorrow and it is reserved’. Starters arrived, plonked down abruptly in front of all the wrong people, no effort to ask who had ordered what. Basic, tasteless food. 50 minute wait for a main course of 3 medium rare steaks, two fish and a duck. All steaks over cooked, chips freezing cold, cauliflower side raw and cold. We politely asked for replacements, waiter was kind and apologetic. However the kitchen staff we could hear berating us, and watched them glare and gesture at us for sending the food back. When I raised this to our waiter, the ‘manager’ Daniele argued with me, refused to apologise and was rude. When I asked to deal only with our polite waiter, he said ‘he just works here’. Replacement steaks were so over salted it they were inedible - obviously their retribution. They didn’t charge for the cold steaks but otherwise offered no apology, discount or or politeness. We paid over £350 for a ruined meal that lasted three miserable hours thanks to appalling management and intimidating chefs. I will never visit again and urge management to consider etiquette training and replace their kitchen staff.

Took my aunt & uncle to Smiths for the first time on Saturday and as always the food was outstanding, and as always, accompanied by helpful, friendly and professional service. The only downside was the lack of reasonably priced wines on offer. This was apparently due to the recent refurb as a large percentage of the wine menu was out of stock, which I sincerely hope to be true and not a ploy to push customers into buying the higher ticket items. Smiths is, and has always been, a great establishment with great food and service, so I hope this was just a small blip that will be rectified soon.
Very disappointing ... looked forward to eating here for a long time and decided on the venue for our anniversary. 2nd floor restaurant half empty. Service was good at first ... we both ordered the spiced chicken ... very bland ... followed this up with cheese ... other than the blue it was tasteless. Service ceased to exist at this point ... never asked if we wanted a coffee or anything else until we indicated that we wanted the bill. Will not be going back !
Very enjoyable catch-up business lunch at Smiths' 2nd Floor Dining Room. Food was very good -
my colleague who had the short rib didn't expect to finish it - but she did; the trout scotch egg and the pork wellington also attracted great feedback. Service was excellent - although as in so many restaurants the staff did seem to be avoiding us when we were trying to get the bill.
Service was slow for lunch.
Can be a bit pricey but the food is extremely good.
Atmosphere is great here too, which just adds so much more to the overall night.
Definitely come here if you want some good food.

Great place for a good steak, nicely cooked and an efficient service but the venue itself is underwhelming!
Lovely food, beautifully cooked. Good service - steady, on hand, non-intrusive. Brilliant wine list - but be prepared to pay well for it. Large selection of craft beers. Lots of fab meat options, but also well thought fish and veg options. Sharing options in all courses available. So, something for everyone.
