Shun Lee Palace
Very disappointing. No one came to see if the dishes were prepared to our liking. The shrimp were fishy, the beef very chewy and 2 of us ended up with upset stomachs.
Outstanding Pequim Duck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This place has gone down hill over the years. Worse and Worse. We had duck, which was dry and over cooked. We ordered lamb medium rare plus, it was well done. Service was snail slow. Disappointed.
The staff was a bit rushed and it showed - menus were thrown rather than placed and table was crowded. We were dining at 9:30 pm and it seems like they had had a long day and couldn't wait to get home. Food was very good though.
Upon arriving, we were ignored and discounted by the rude and condescending ‘hostess’ who rushed past our small party to seat a group which arrived after us but had been expected. When confronted she reacted hatefully and failed to apologize or properly care for our experience. She clearly should be replaced immediately. Btw our waiters were amazing. It is sad she chose to be unkind.
Overpriced, mediocre food, we had Jumbo Shrimp in Grand Marnier sauce which was fried shrimp in a mayonnaise glop.
Went a few days later to a Hell's Kitchen family run Chinese restaurant. Delicious food at 1/4 the price.
Excellent service, old school classic NY Chinese food.
One of if not the best Chinese restaurants in the City. Service can a little overly formal but the food more than makes up for it.
Still the best Chinese cuisine restaurant in the US. In twenty years never a single disappointing dish; having tried nearly every item on the menu, I found every one excellent.
Good generally good and service efficient. But the place hasn’t changed significantly in many many years and needs some updating. The decor is nice but now tired. The food menu and preparations also getting tired although still generally good.
The entire staff is so incredibly friendly and the food is delicious. Great for larger parties as it is very spacious.
As good as Chinese food can be. The best hot and sour soup I have ever had. Pleasant room and attentive service. Expensive.
Good food, but service was pathetic!!
Avoid going for dinner...lunch a better prospect!
Shun Lee is our favorite Chinese restaurant in NYC. We’ve been going almost 40 years and it never disappoints. The crispy beef and Peking Duck rock our world.
Probably #1 Chinese restaurants in NYC
Poor food. Over priced
Waiter recommended a terrible dish - crab in egg and was all egg drop soup with no crab. The waiter didn’t offer another dish
Food was greasy and horribly overpriced.
Great food and service !!! Terrific ambiance Love it any time we go there !!!
Wonderful food, wonderful service, I love this restaurant!
Best Chinese food in Manhattan outside of Chinatown and Flushing,Queens. Super attentive care and concern for the comfort of their patrons.
7:15 dinner Wednesday nite 4 people.
Captain takes order. 45 minutes go by with no appetizers showing up;good thing company was fun. We ask waiter what's doing - get a blank stare.
Captain tells us he gave order to kitchen not his fault. 15 mins go by they deliver our Peking duck, fried rice we didnt order, spare ribs which were an appetizer and a bowl of soup.
They couldn't even fit it all on the table.
Food was ok not not bad.
Obviously a Chinese restaurant for people that comfortable staying nearby for mediocre overpriced Chinese food.
I have been going here for more than 40 years. Dinner was ok but the service was inattentive and arrogant. The decor is tired and dirty. The culmination was when a server came back with my Citibank MC and loudly announced that it had been declined and I needed to give her a new card. This was very embarrassing. I checked with Citibank and the reason it was declined was because the dopes kept swiping it when it is a chip.card. These people should not be running a restaurant.
We always enjoy Shun Lee- the food is delicious and it has a nice ambience . That being said we had a waiter( waitress) who seemed to find us a bit annoying. Simple requests were met with a grimace. The end of the meal left us begging for hot tea for all- a long laborious task. That is the one part of the experience that is hit or miss every time we go...but if you want delicious Chinese food- great Peking Duck, ribs, delicious dumplings etc, this can't be beat.
My favorite Chinese restaurant in the world. Have been going ther for 40 years
Do not eat here if you are gluten free. The food off the GF menu is bland and tasteless. The chef clearly does not know GF soy sauce is widely available.
The restaurant also is desperately in need of a make over.
Remarkably consistent and underrated (by those who have never eaten here), Shun Lee is an institution of decades of fine dining Chinese cuisine. Chinese food in a grubby noisy China Town location does not make the food any more authentic than Shun Lee - unless you think no one in China ever eats excellent food in pleasant surrounding with good service. Even the wine list is well chosen to go with the food at a higher level. Newcomers like Budakan may be more fashionable but the food is not as good and needing to scream across the table or use a flashlight to read the menu may be trendy but the “old standby” Shun Lee is the real deal.
I used to LUVVV Shun Lee Palace. But it has lost its luster. It feels tired now. At least at lunch time. The food used to be the best. Now it isn't that great. The server decided without asking us to set up all of our orders as shared dishes, already plated. We were not planning to share our dishes.
We went there for my wife’s birthday with a party of 7, including a well behaved 5 year old. Mentioned the birthday on the Open Table reservation. Bought a nice, not inexpensive bottle of wine and would have bought another if they had asked. The restaurant was not crowded. We were not the last people there, though we were the last in that room. The waiter never offered us coffee or dessert. I asked for a cappuccino and he said “the machine is broken. Been broken for a long time.” I asked for coffee. He said “we’re out of coffee. Do you want more tea.” Brought fortune cookies but no sweets. Would not recommend this place and will never go back.
The food is always SUPERB and the service always outstanding. You can't go wrong if you love the best Chinese food in the City!
this used to be a fantastic Chinese restaurant. On this recent visit the food was not only uninspired, the spicey noodles were tasteless; the Bejing fried dumplings were doughy (the filing was tasty but small); the spareribs were unremarkable; the baby eggplant were good; the place settings are beautiful but probably not to millenial taste; the service was good. It's just not good enough to warrant paying the prices of a 4 or 5 star restaurant and there is a $4. x-tra charge for brown rice instead of a small scoop of white rice. No. . .not today
Even if the clientele are old and tired, and the really nice space can use a facelift, the food remains among the best anywhere. Additionally, the consistency of service and food quality is amazing. Every bite was worth their high price. We will be back - absolutely.
Excellent in every way
Upscale restaurant. Great food. Prompt service.
My 2d time. Perhaps a little pricey—even for Manhattan.
As usual, the friendly and accommodating service was wonderful. The spare ribs and Peking duck superb.
Coming to Shun LEE for 30 years. My fav go to place. Apparently the chef quit during dinner. 2 hour wait for lukewarm food. No one was in charge in the dinning room. Service awful. A very forgettable evening
Reported the experience to the “manager” who shrugged his shoulders and made no accommodations for us. Big disappointment
We love Shun Lee! Food was great, service was exceptional. We look forward to our next visit!
This longtime Manhattan standout still provides delicious, old-style Chinese food with panache. Guests are treated with warmth and great service.
Shun Lee Palace is an upscale Chinese restaurant. Th décor is elegant, like you are eating in a Chinese palace with 50 of your friends. The service is impeccable.
Try the cold sesame noodles to start and then treat yourself to the sea bass hunan style. It is sweet and spicy and tangy...and cooked to perfection. It never disappoints. It is easily shared by two or three.
This was an unfortunate experience. They seated us outside the main dining room and it felt like we were outsiders. The service was not as good as it used to be. Perhaps because we were not white - I don't know. It was very odd. Once they were with us - they were nice - but we had to ask for everything - the menu, water, tea... This is a very nice place and I have been there many times with my in laws. In fact, my friend and I wanted to go here specifically to remember my in-laws who have since passed. Just overall, it was not a great experience. Food was ok - and we knew that it was going to be 3x the price we pay in Chinatown. But the service and overall was just not up to par - so I won't be recommending SHUN LEE any more - at least not for Asian Americans - they treated us like we were "other," as they served our white counterparts with better service. Too bad - this used to be one of my fave restaurants. And the price tag for 2 people with tip and tax came to $185 - we ordered 4 dishes... so no more for them. They are such an institution that they will be fine - just don't need me to come here anymore. RIP SHUN LEE PALACE -
Thank you for letting me share.
Our server was very helpful. We asked if they could do a half duck - only a whole duck was listed on the menu. Of course was her answer. It was juicy and succulent, with crispy skin - perfection embodied! She served our dishes for us - we were really taken care of. The food is excellent and do take advantage of Shun Lee’s professional and helpful servers!
Shun Lee is always a treat to visit. The host and servers always polite and read to assist with any request. The food is delicious, portions generous and well presented.
