We had the pleasure of coming on Easter Saturday , with my husband and daughter , for the 5course degustation menu . The location was great in the trendy suburb of Collingwood . The decor is quirky but lovely.
My husband is a vegan and it was amazing to find a restaurant that understands and knows how to cook and present tasty vegan food in a very sophisticated way.
Value for money and service was very personable and efficient .
Highly recommend this little jewel of a restaurant.

Amazingly creative space and great vibe! Good venue for groups of couples. The owner (and head chef) spent the night on the floor make sure everyone’s experience was perfect. It was great to meet him and hear his story. His passion for his business radiated from him.
I’m not vegan but my date was and we both really enjoyed our meals (I can highly recommend the Steamed Eggplants). There was a nice selection of wines, the staff you friendly, and the decor is truly unique.
My only gripe was the that toilet light was set to constantly change colour. I found that a bit dissorienting.
Anyway, great place! I’ll defiantly be back.
A great night out. We had the carnivore degustation menu. 10 dishes. 8 out of 10 dishes were delicious. Not a huge fan of the accompaniment with the silken tofu and the avocado based dessert. Loved the pork dumplings spring rolls, scallop sashimi, beef tartare, chicken cutlet and noodle dish.
Amazing restaurant, the service was fantastic, and the food and wine were to die for!
Enjoyed celebrating a birthday with the degustation with meat and seafood and thoroughly enjoyed all courses. Great atmosphere, attentive and friendly staff and amazing flavours in every dish. Great value for money and a real experience.
Shu definitely exceeded expectations. We shared the Vegan Degustation that was such a bang for your buck. The flavours were strong, textures were creative and wine pairing was awesome. The following evening we went to another Vegan Degustation that was double the price and didn't even come close in terms of quality of food. Go to Shu and eat Vegan!
The decore was hectic - looked like they wanted to do something “edgy” but some of the execution was a bit haphazard/ sloppy/ cheaply done. It was still kinda fun. The impression I had of Shu before my visit was that it is more fine dining but it isn’t. Service is warm, friendly, attentive, professional but casual. Vegan tasting menu was delicious! I’d definitely recommend it. Great value for $55.
Thought it was a really great set up! Really cool vibe and great setting with friendly staff. One problem was the food seemed a bit rushed and might have been because of a lack of staff but thought maybe get some extra cooks in to take the pressure off, especially on such a busy night :)
The food was great, my only problem was when i payed by eftpos i somehow also tipped an extra $31.00 without realising, I was told that happened because my password started with a 3? Not happy at all , bid of a shifty scam if you ask me, I wonder how many more people have made this mistake without even knowing
Went to Shu Restaurant for a friend's birthday. She wanted Chinese and this was an experience way beyond that. She is a foodie so when the waiter suggested the 7 course degestation menu we all went into his hands. She loved the textures tastes, the quirky use of everyday Chinese crockery for unexpected dining applications, the decor, the surroundings and the very expert knowledge of the host. She often said it reminded her of the vibrant restaurants she experienced in Shanghai, which meant it brought back fond memories as well as wonderful taste experiences. The waiter was also able to tell us where the name Shu came from, but if you want to know you will have to go there. By the way I loved every part of the dining experience at Shu as well and would recommend it highly to all.

Really disappointed with Shu. The restaurant is trying to be an edgy fine dining experience, but the IKEA lamps on the tables and generally strange and cold ambience felt cheap and tacky, like a school project. The food was bad; most dishes felt the same, they were over salted, and produce quality was Poor (dry dehydrated peas in the stir fry). The service was slow (5-30 mins between courses of the vegan degustation). We were so disappointed with this place. Do yourself a favour and go somewhere established and just get your favourite meal, you're not missing anything if you skip Shu.
Excellent service and great food. Had the 10 course vegan degustation menu. So nice as a vegetarian to have different food offered that I could not replicate at home. Nice to just have it come out and not make choices! Servings just right. Didn't over indulge. Ordered the avocardo "cheese"cake as extra and was very nice.
As a group of 4 we had heard great things about Shu Collingwood & as my wife is Vegan, the Vegan Degustation had great expectations. With a 7:30 booking on Saturday night, we were seated at a nice table and although a large private function was in the rear of the restaurant, it was not yet full. Initial drink orders were taken & we all requested the Degustation menu (3 traditional at $65 per head & 1 Vegan at $55). Service dropped off from there - it was really slow between courses & gathered it was due to the 10 expected courses. From here, we were not offered another drink for the night - for any service we'd wave down one of 2 staff (?), most of there time looking after the rather loud function. But it's Saturday night & we're out for a good time. Problem now, is that drinks that have been ordered - simply do not arrive. Finally after 6 servings of predominantly little morsels with the odd share dish - we are promptly advised that "we hope that was okay, there's no dessert as we've sold out". With that we decide we're done & again flag down a waiter & ask for the bill. This turns out to be just before the "entertainment" arrives for the function & once again we are forgotten. So we wave down the waiter again & make a 2nd request for the bill, with admittedly apologies for the delay & advice it's on it's way. Ten minutes later & we've had enough - CAN WE HAVE THE BILL ...PLEASE ! Finally on the 3rd occasion a bill arrives & surprise, one of our lost drinks has been found - on the bill, not on our table. Again staff were very apologetic for the error & corrected it. All in all, maybe it was just a bad night, the unusual private function taking the attention of staff but the food was nothing special. I would struggle to recommend a particular dish - service was haphazard at best & for a 7:30 sitting surely for a long standing restaurant they are able to plan & cater for dessert ?
If you are in Melbourne you simply must do the vegan degustation - even if you are a carnivore :)

We loved our evening at Shu! The vegan degustation menu was brilliant - and we're not even vegetarian! Very reasonably priced, too. The cocktails were very enticing, the decor was creative and added a great vibe, the service was excellent and the owner was very friendly.

I am certainly impressed by the variety of dishes and different taste of each dish. all very delicate spicy yet subtle. What's more being a non vegetarian the vegan experience totally impressed and convinced me that vegetarian food can be delicious. Loved the herb garden entree.
Whilst this degustation menu is near perfect I would personally like to finish this up with a little carb I.e a small fried rice or steamed mixed veg rice or noodles.
Nevertheless, this restaurant is highly recommended. Kudos to the chef!
I dined at Shu with 2 friends and we had the 10 course vegan degustation and then shared the avocado cheesecake for dessert. The degustation was only $50pp and a total steal. The cheesecake was far beyond what I expected! I would highly recommend Shu to friends and family.
I love going to SHU. It's a treat for your tastebuds. Shu is Chinese food, but not like you've grown up with. Shu's take on the food he learned to cook growing up is modern, zesty varied and fun. Groovy without being snobby, foodie without being fussy, I've never had a bad meal there and it's a quite spectacular eating experience. Do the tasting menu. It's essential.
My partner and I had heard great reviews of the 10 course detestation and we weren't disappointed. Staff was friendly, the ambience is relaxed with quirky but fun decor. The food was exceptional and affordable.
it was dead, this should have been a red flag to walk back out, but considering how half of the reviews were rating it a must try, we sat down. I ordered the meat degustation and my friend ordered the vegan. 10 courses and 8 were not edible, 2 were ok. either too spicy, too salty or too bland. my meat degustation included 3 vegan dishes??? don't waste your time here
WE had the 10 course vegan degustation - all of which was delicious. The selection of beers was also very good but unfortunately they had run out of vegan wines (please stock more !). The only downside was the harsh decor with hard surfaces all around which made ambient noise very loud. Also, the teen music playing was not well selected considering most of their clientele were middle-aged.
Really interesting out there restaurant very Collingwood. Staff were great not too over crowded just right for an intimate dinner for two people.

Absolutely delicious! The vegan degustation was sensational. So fresh and flavourful.
Food was great, perhaps slightly over priced. Service was also good, however this restaurant severely lacked atmosphere, we were the only ones in the restaurant on a Friday night.
Shu has funky decor, great service and mixed food quality. The eggplant plant rolls were dry however the tofu in spicy sauce was tasty with good texture. We ordered a second tofu dish which was bland.
All you can eat dumplings. Pork, fish and vegan. All nice but a little more variety would have made it perfect. Great service
It was a trully wonderful experience. The place is delightfully funky and the food is delicious
weird joint with terrible service. had to ask for everything, even another drink. and when id ask, she get me one, then everyone else at the table would have to ask without her ever asking "can i get another drink for you". it went on all night. it was comically bad. ontop of all that I ordered the prawns and had to de-shell them myself. jees i hate that! i know they wont read this or care so not even sure why im wasting my time.
