When Ross Magnaye and Shane Stafford started Serai, their vision was to create a restaurant that would fit perfectly in the heart of the Philippines. To replicate the spirit, vitality, passion and sense of fun, they knew Serai would become a home from home for our diners.

​At our restaurant, right in the heart of Melbourne, you can watch the chefs prepare and fresh food daily in our open kitchen at the chef’s omakase table or relax in the restaurant and bar with a glass of our hand picked, vin naturel selections or signature cocktails.

    Serai is a culinary gem that brilliantly reimagines Filipino cuisine. Showcasing dishes that are both innovative and familiar. The standout dishes were the Seared Kangaroo Kilawin, Gippsland Lamb Ribs with sticky adobo sauce, Lechon Pork Belly, and the Marble 9 Sher Wagyu—each dish bursting with flavor and creativity. The staff went above and beyond to accommodate my husband’s severe food allergies to nuts and seafood, providing helpful suggestions and ensuring everything was safe for him. This was my fourth time dining here (my husband’s, sister in law and her partner’s first), and I can’t wait for the next visit! Highly recommended for anyone looking to indulge in a unique culinary experience in Melbourne!

    We arrived and were chaotically greeted by three different servers, and then were presented with the drinks menu. It was 11 minutes before drinks were able to be ordered, and 15 after arrival before we received a food menu. Whether this is gross incompetence or some misguided ploy to force people to drink before getting to view the food is peculiar. It seems odd to be asked to choose wine without knowing what you'll be eating it with. Staff seemed to require some direction or understanding of their stations, as they seemed to be equally in a flurry as they were inattentive. We didn't have a second drink, simply because there was no opportunity to order one. Granted, the food was nice. But I need more superlatives than that when paying over $40 for a beef cheek rendang curry (rice not included), $24 for a couple of hashbrowns was beyond absurd, considering their limited flavour profile and room temperature arrival. The option to describe the noise level as 'energetic' is a bit misleading. If you want to have a conversation with more than one person, this is not the location for you. Having said that, your elbows with fellow diners are closer than on a crowded domestic flight, so cosy is an understatement. The hard surfaces abound, so the thudding music is just a reverberating bass that neither complements the atmosphere or sets a mood beyond 'dimly lit construction site'

    Great service, delicious cocktails but we expected more flavour from the food. Perhaps we choose badly. Salted duck egg croquette very bland. Oysters chewy and too big. Prawns delicious, kangaroo on marrow bone delicious. Mcscallop nice but not outstanding. A lovely evening but nearly $400 for two people (3 cocktails each and the bone marrow ‘special’ may have had something to do with price)

    Fantastic food, great service, good ambience, very happy with our experience at Serai. The food was just outstanding. The bbq meat and cassava dessert were out of this world!
