Ruyi
A union of beautifully presented Chinese food, an impressive wine list, exceptional design and modern restaurant culture.
Working closely with renowned design studio, Hecker Guthrie and artisanal suppliers, Ruyi is a combination of premium food, wine and atmosphere. The interior palate is a very specific nod to traditional Chinese crimson and jade colours, in a modern context with its oxblood and sage tones.
Designer Paul Hecker was mindful of the Ruyi’s physical location and its proximity to other restaurants serving Chinese cuisine, so the fit out needed to have a sense of simplicity and earthiness to compliment this. We didn’t want the design to scream China; instead we wanted to subtly hint at the distinctly Asian influence,” says Hecker.
My boyfriend dined around Christmas time and sent me here to experience his ‘one of the best dining experience in Melbourne’. I had an 8 course, the food was so yummy and we also picked a bottle of Riesling to go with our food, perfect match especially with the ceviche and potato prawns. Our server, Adrian was very helpful and friendly. Really nice experience.
If you like good food and good wine, you can’t miss this place. I reckon their menu was specifically designed to go with the drinks. Would definitely come back to try the numbing beef. On top of it, the warm and welcoming service makes your dining experience really enjoyable.
Great attentiveness and service by the front staff. Our waiter, Adrian was warm and friendly and also helped us select the dishes and drinks. Im usually picky but the suggestions were great, especially the slow cooked duck in master stock. Will be back very soon.
We were looking for a private venue for a staff dinner so we booked the private function room. Food was spectacular and so were the cocktails. The chilli margarita has won all of our hear. Its a great place for privacy and the service staff took care of us well and helped us navigate the menu. It was amazing, absolutely worth every single dollar.
We have been here few years ago, upon returning this time, food and service was on another level! There were also new dishes added so we tried them first, our favourite was the kingfish entree. Missed this restaurant so much.
Just had the perfect saturday night. The 5 course for two my wife and I had was exactly what we needed. Perfect amount of food, delicious and filled us up just right!
Found this cute little spot by accident and it turned out to be a really nice place to grab some cocktails along with the food. The eggplant fries and the lychee infused cocktail were the standout choices for me.
This was our first time and it was an amazing experience. Hats off to the service staff who were very informative. They helped us choose the food and we thoroughly enjoyed all the recommendations. The flaming king prawns were the best of the lot.
My dad and I love seafood but also wanted to try some of the other dishes so the staff suggested we get the 8 course feast. That certainly did not disappoint. The kingfish ceviche and potato prawns with an awesome dipping sauce were the best but we also liked the numbing beef. The dishes also kept coming at a steady rate so our table was never overflowing with plates. Fantastic service.
Fabulous! Part of mwff, street feast over the new year and it was excellent. An opportunity to try somewhere new and we shall definitely return.
The worst service I've ever experienced. It was the much awaited NYE celebrations that we booked into. And they were very short staffed even thought this was a planned event with the city council. The manager kept yelling at the staff, who did not manage to get any order right. The waiter at our table was so distracted that while we were placing the order, he didn't even look at us, he was looking at other tables and there was zero customer service. Literally every customer seated at the tables were looking around at each other and sighing over the quality of service. We waited almost for an hour to get our drinks.
I also feel that we were scammed for the portion sizes we got versus the amount we got charged for it. We booked the restaurant per person in one booking, but we were given only one plate of food for each course to be shared. That's very unfair. There was no value for the money we paid. The taste of the dishes were too extreme. The dumplings arrived cold and the sauce was so sour. The numbing beef dish had too much pepper in it. The chicken wings were way too sweet. Honestly the portion sizes were too small, yet we weren't able to finish our dishes because the taste wasn't good at all. I wouldn't recommend going to this place. I'm a 100% sure about that.
Booked here for new years eve. The service was astrocious. We booked for 9.45pm. We weren't seated until 10 and then the waiters served us our first course after another 45 minutes. The worst they didn't take our drink order even us attempting several times to get their attention. Imagine new years eve 5 course dinner with no drink and a cold dish after 45 minutes. The waiters who were only hired for the night lost track of the orders didn't know the menu and didn't know which table was served which course. We did find some amusement in the waiters fighting and looking lost at the crowd
Wontons base sauce was overly vinegary and could not taste the filling. One of the bowls was replaced by the manager showed they are willing to listen to feedback. But as plain wonton without any sauce as they said sauce mixture is already prepared for all the wontons served on new years.
Wings is crispy and flavourful on the outside but bland in the middle, and ordinary fried wings is the main dish of the night. Duck bao was one piece each with filling that does not fill half the bun, manager commented that each ingredient is measured and weighed in size. No replacement was offered or provided.
The service was terrible, pretentious quantities of food and wine were served at the new years dinner. Not worth the price charged as neither the quality or quantity of food or drinks was worth. Server was rude, and manager was seen clearly upset with one of the wait staff and yelled at them in front of the customers. It is expected things might not always go according to plan on a festive season where you expect to serve 200 guests.
The food was delicious. Good portion size and arrived quite promptly. People serving us were friendly.
Food is delicious and well priced. Only problem is the proximity between tables.
The flavour in the foods was overwhelming with little distinguishing tastes between each of the dishes. Was much better last year.
The location is super. The food & service are excellent. If you want a fusion chinese cuisine in Melbourne, do not miss it.
Everything we ordered was delicious. Staff were delightful.
Wonderful meal, attentive service and experience for our family of 3. We had the 8 course set which was an amazing selection of different tastes and they added toddler friendly fried rice which was devoured with gusto. Will recommend and return for more.
The staff and ambience of the restaurant was delightful. Small, almost boutique like.
The quality of the food was sensational, I would definitely come again and advise friends to visit.
Hi loved most of the dishes. I did feel it was a little pricey. But the service was fantastic.
Very tasty food selection - tapas style portions
Great seafood and vegetarian choices
Ruyi is a favourite of mine! The food and service is always amazing!!!
We had a mix of dishes from Shoa Long Bao to Spicy Sichuan beef and it tasted like we were used to when we lived in Shanghai 👌🏻
The food and service was fantastic! The restaurant is also beautiful. Thank you for a great evening!
Food and service was amazing the only thing we didn't like was the lamb it was to.salty
Food was inventive, exceptional quality. In a contemporary and cool room
There’s a reason this place is empty on a Friday night in the middle of a street jam packed in every other establishment. The food all tastes the same - kind of heavy and sweet, with a sneaking suspicion some of it comes from the freezer section of a supermarket... A whole lot of narrative about the proprietor is on the menu, maybe a little less attention on their story, and more attention on the customer experience? This place is C grade quality in a B grade premises, masquerading as A grade. If you think this food is good, you really haven’t been around Melbourne enough.
A quiet lunchtime and we were fussed over. Range of food was very interesting and all our dishes were tasty and value for money.
Service was polite and accommodating. We added an additional diner last minute and they were very helpful. Food was good but not outstanding. Quality of food was good but a little pricey for what it was. It is the least busy restaurant on Liverpool lane.
Just a lovely mid-range asian option - lovely staff, good cocktails, comfortable noise levels. Perfect when you want something a step up from cheap and cheerful (but want to avoid the queues at the popular asian fusion popular places).
Overall we loved the food and service. We went with the 5 course banquet chosen by the chef, which we both enjoyed every course. We shared a dessert of three different plates which finished off the meal perfectly. To say nothing of the "Ginger Ginger" cocktail which was to good for words.
Great service and outstanding food.
Different to your 'normal' Melbourne suburban chinese restaurant (no lemon chicken or dim sims here) but all for the better.
Highly recommended.
Slightly disappointed in the food & service. When we arrived our table wasn't ready. We ordered drinks which took a half hour to arrive and had to ask if they were still coming. The food was very spicy and the "fire cracker was almost inedible.
Het eten was erg lekker en niet te veel. De bediening was goed
料理とサービスは素敵です!友達は大好きです!
Delicious food and amazing service. Really nothing to fault - this place should be busier than it was!
Food was nice, the dish was well thought out. Yet service was far from satisfaction, took very long for food to be served, waiter are nice but often too busy to see any customer, so in terms of food it's fine, in terms of service and management there's room for improvements
Had an 8 course banquet for Lunar New Year. The servings were about right and flavours were fresh and delicate. Well executed. Not so keen on the Peking Duck bao but otherwise a enjoyable meal was had all round. Thanks Ruyi.
Fabulous meal, great service. Eggplant fries and tofu were stand-outs.
