A union of beautifully presented Chinese food, an impressive wine list, exceptional design and modern restaurant culture.
Working closely with renowned design studio, Hecker Guthrie and artisanal suppliers, Ruyi is a combination of premium food, wine and atmosphere. The interior palate is a very specific nod to traditional Chinese crimson and jade colours, in a modern context with its oxblood and sage tones.
Designer Paul Hecker was mindful of the Ruyi’s physical location and its proximity to other restaurants serving Chinese cuisine, so the fit out needed to have a sense of simplicity and earthiness to compliment this. We didn’t want the design to scream China; instead we wanted to subtly hint at the distinctly Asian influence,” says Hecker.

Had a lovely time at Ruyi. Nice venue and tasty modern dishes.
Great hidden gem to discover in the cbd.
It is not authentic Chinese cuisine, as much as they said it was.
There were 2 sittings..so we had to go to a Bar across the road before our table was available. The restaurant is very small, but I had to go to the Bar to ask if Table Service or Order at the Bar"?
So obviously service was very poor.
Second time visiting RuYi in the last few months. Service and food impeccable. The manager recognised us straight away from our previous time visiting and was very hospitable. Would highly recommend and can’t wait to be back!
Beautiful flavors presented simply.
I'd definitely return to try more dishes on the menu.
Amazing! We had such a great evening .. opted for the Chefs choice of 3 courses which came to the table well spaced. Added on Duck in master stock and Dumplings two ways. Lovely friendly service and delicious food. Highly recommend!! Simple but very good wine selection by the glass and bottle.
We loved Ruyi. From the moment we entered Ruyi the staff was fantastic. We are vegetarians, we chose a set menu and the food was fantastic. The staff was helpful and informative on all aspects of the menu. You should definitely go. Highly recommended.
If a restaurant has been open in one of the CBD’s hidden laneways for 8 years, they must have done a great job. My girl friend booked the place to celebrate my birthday. We had the 5 course set menu. The food was lovely. We were amazed at how good the tofu tasted with all the sauces and seaweed on top. The wontons came with this amazing spicy, tangy sauce. Loved the duck meat bao bao sandwich which was full of flavor. Whats also wonderful was that the cocktails are tailored for Asian food, we had a lychee and also a citrus flavored cocktail which went very well with the food. The service was great and friendly. They helped us with the menu and also gave us a complimentary dessert for the birthday occasion. This was one of the best birthdays ever.
We had a small 50th birthday celebration for my sister. Loved the 8 course set menu, for $79 per person, it was a great value for 8 high quality dishes. We started off with a kingfish ceviche which was so fresh and had a great sauce. The juicy numbing beef had a slight kick to it that made it even more tasty. We also loved the peking duck cones which had a beautiful presentation. For mains we had succulent steamed barramundi and caramelised pork ribs which looked as good as they tasted. Wonderful cocktail list and wine list. Service was top notch, the attention to detail really blew us away. From the greeting to going over the menus to the farewell, everything was with a lot of charm. They took care of us so well that we were all smiles the entire night.
There are many restaurants in the area, we needed to pick one for dinner before our 8 o’clock show. A friend of mine recommended RuYi, after reading all the reviews we decided to have a go. What a great experience! Upon arrival we were warmly greeted by the service staff who were so friendly. They helped us through the menu and recommended several dishes and especially ones which were best paired with wines. The food was delicious. Great recommendations. The mouth-watering numbing beef went perfectly with a glass of pinot noir. We also had some chardonnay paired with the kingfish ceviche which was a nice match. For mains we had the steamed barramundi which was cooked to perfection. A memorable dinner experience.
Picked RuYi for our company’s work function this year. The 8 course dinner was sensational! Every dish had a unique and flavourful ring to it and was amazing. The subtle ceviche, succulent numbing beef and peking duck pancakes really stood out among the small dishes. The slow cooked duck main dish was hearty and we finished off with a nice creme brulee dessert. We chose some Italian Pinot Grigio, some Aussie Chardonnay and some Victoria Pinot noir for the evening to match different courses. Even the pickiest wine connoisseur on the table was happy with the wine quality and value. Thanks to all the floor staff who hosted our function, we will be back soon.
We were here to have dinner before watching the show at the comedy theatre. Loved the peking duck cones. We pretty much ordered only tapas with wine and they were all amazing. The bao bao, ceviche and shao long bao were so yummy. Service was great too and very knowledgable. I am quite choosy of what I eat so they helped me by describing the dishes and recommended some great ones. The vibe was calm and peaceful and we loved it! Highly recommend for pre or after theatre dining.
RuYi never disappointed us. We have been here a few times. The food always great. We noticed they have added a few new items like the ceviche and potato stir fry which were amazing. I kinda miss the garlic broccoli but they've got a new chinese broccoli which is just as good. We've tried almost all of the cocktails before so it was nice to try some new ones. The lychee and also the kumquat cocktails will surely be everyone’s favourites soon. The service is ever top notch, informative, friendly and makes you feel relaxed. Thats why I keep coming back and will be back soon again.
Had dinner at RuYi the day after Australian day. The vibe is calm cozy and elegant, service was attentive and friendly. They gave good recommendations about food and drinks. It was our first time so we had no clue what to order and they were so helpful. We had their premium wagyu beef and omg it was out of this world. The meat, mushrooms and black truffle sprinkled on top just made my day. Its a dish fit for royalty. We topped that off with some red wine and it was one of the best dining sessions in the CBD we ever had!
Moved from Singapore to Melbourne couple years ago, never found any really good Asian restaurant here. Friends recommended RuYi, we had a try and it was a hit! Seafood is always our favourite and we tried almost every options. Tingling prawns were so yummy. Then the flaming king prawn was like fireworks because they light on fire, very nice to look at and also yummy. For main we tried steamed fish with side of chinese broccoli. The fish was so soft and nice sauce. We had some Chardonnay with that and it was perfect. Waiters helped a lot to pick the food and drink. Great job! Thanks to our friends who find this place, we recommend this place very much.
It was our company gathering and we booked it at RuYi, it was surprisingly good. We chose the 8 course set menu. So glad we did that. Everyone loved the dishes, none of us had dietary needs so it was a shared sense of joy. The standouts had to be the kingfish ceviche with that world class sauce, numbing beef, peking duck pancakes and the potato prawns with an amazing dipping sauce. We were also impressed with tofu at the start specially with the presentation. Tasted great too. We all started with a cocktail each, the drinks came out quick and with top grade quality. The lychee one was the best of the lot. The host helped us to picked the white and red wine to accommodate the food, a memorable experience. Each course arrived with a menu description from the service staff, which made the dinner more enjoyable.
We had our Saturday dinner at RuYi last week. We were so glad to find this gem in the top end of the city. We had a 5 course ‘as you wish’ set menu. I never expected tofu to taste so good. The combination of sauce and mayo drizzled on top was perfect. The bao sandwich was great too, flavours were well balanced. The drink list is well designed and there are so many choices. Thats a very good sign that they really care about the experience. We started with 2 cocktails then moved to a bottle of rosé. Would really recommend this place for a set course meal.
My boyfriend dined around Christmas time and sent me here to experience his ‘one of the best dining experience in Melbourne’. I had an 8 course, the food was so yummy and we also picked a bottle of Riesling to go with our food, perfect match especially with the ceviche and potato prawns. Our server, Adrian was very helpful and friendly. Really nice experience.
If you like good food and good wine, you can’t miss this place. I reckon their menu was specifically designed to go with the drinks. Would definitely come back to try the numbing beef. On top of it, the warm and welcoming service makes your dining experience really enjoyable.
Great attentiveness and service by the front staff. Our waiter, Adrian was warm and friendly and also helped us select the dishes and drinks. Im usually picky but the suggestions were great, especially the slow cooked duck in master stock. Will be back very soon.
We were looking for a private venue for a staff dinner so we booked the private function room. Food was spectacular and so were the cocktails. The chilli margarita has won all of our hear. Its a great place for privacy and the service staff took care of us well and helped us navigate the menu. It was amazing, absolutely worth every single dollar.
We have been here few years ago, upon returning this time, food and service was on another level! There were also new dishes added so we tried them first, our favourite was the kingfish entree. Missed this restaurant so much.
Just had the perfect saturday night. The 5 course for two my wife and I had was exactly what we needed. Perfect amount of food, delicious and filled us up just right!
Found this cute little spot by accident and it turned out to be a really nice place to grab some cocktails along with the food. The eggplant fries and the lychee infused cocktail were the standout choices for me.
This was our first time and it was an amazing experience. Hats off to the service staff who were very informative. They helped us choose the food and we thoroughly enjoyed all the recommendations. The flaming king prawns were the best of the lot.
My dad and I love seafood but also wanted to try some of the other dishes so the staff suggested we get the 8 course feast. That certainly did not disappoint. The kingfish ceviche and potato prawns with an awesome dipping sauce were the best but we also liked the numbing beef. The dishes also kept coming at a steady rate so our table was never overflowing with plates. Fantastic service.
Fabulous! Part of mwff, street feast over the new year and it was excellent. An opportunity to try somewhere new and we shall definitely return.
The worst service I've ever experienced. It was the much awaited NYE celebrations that we booked into. And they were very short staffed even thought this was a planned event with the city council. The manager kept yelling at the staff, who did not manage to get any order right. The waiter at our table was so distracted that while we were placing the order, he didn't even look at us, he was looking at other tables and there was zero customer service. Literally every customer seated at the tables were looking around at each other and sighing over the quality of service. We waited almost for an hour to get our drinks.
I also feel that we were scammed for the portion sizes we got versus the amount we got charged for it. We booked the restaurant per person in one booking, but we were given only one plate of food for each course to be shared. That's very unfair. There was no value for the money we paid. The taste of the dishes were too extreme. The dumplings arrived cold and the sauce was so sour. The numbing beef dish had too much pepper in it. The chicken wings were way too sweet. Honestly the portion sizes were too small, yet we weren't able to finish our dishes because the taste wasn't good at all. I wouldn't recommend going to this place. I'm a 100% sure about that.
Booked here for new years eve. The service was astrocious. We booked for 9.45pm. We weren't seated until 10 and then the waiters served us our first course after another 45 minutes. The worst they didn't take our drink order even us attempting several times to get their attention. Imagine new years eve 5 course dinner with no drink and a cold dish after 45 minutes. The waiters who were only hired for the night lost track of the orders didn't know the menu and didn't know which table was served which course. We did find some amusement in the waiters fighting and looking lost at the crowd
Wontons base sauce was overly vinegary and could not taste the filling. One of the bowls was replaced by the manager showed they are willing to listen to feedback. But as plain wonton without any sauce as they said sauce mixture is already prepared for all the wontons served on new years.
Wings is crispy and flavourful on the outside but bland in the middle, and ordinary fried wings is the main dish of the night. Duck bao was one piece each with filling that does not fill half the bun, manager commented that each ingredient is measured and weighed in size. No replacement was offered or provided.
The service was terrible, pretentious quantities of food and wine were served at the new years dinner. Not worth the price charged as neither the quality or quantity of food or drinks was worth. Server was rude, and manager was seen clearly upset with one of the wait staff and yelled at them in front of the customers. It is expected things might not always go according to plan on a festive season where you expect to serve 200 guests.
The food was delicious. Good portion size and arrived quite promptly. People serving us were friendly.
Food is delicious and well priced. Only problem is the proximity between tables.
The flavour in the foods was overwhelming with little distinguishing tastes between each of the dishes. Was much better last year.
The location is super. The food & service are excellent. If you want a fusion chinese cuisine in Melbourne, do not miss it.
Everything we ordered was delicious. Staff were delightful.
Wonderful meal, attentive service and experience for our family of 3. We had the 8 course set which was an amazing selection of different tastes and they added toddler friendly fried rice which was devoured with gusto. Will recommend and return for more.
The staff and ambience of the restaurant was delightful. Small, almost boutique like.
The quality of the food was sensational, I would definitely come again and advise friends to visit.
Hi loved most of the dishes. I did feel it was a little pricey. But the service was fantastic.
Very tasty food selection - tapas style portions
Great seafood and vegetarian choices
Ruyi is a favourite of mine! The food and service is always amazing!!!
We had a mix of dishes from Shoa Long Bao to Spicy Sichuan beef and it tasted like we were used to when we lived in Shanghai 👌🏻
