Rothbard Ale + Larder
Rothbard Ale + Larder offers dishes and drinks inspired by the Central European regions. Located in the heart of Westport’s Main Street district, Rothbard has become known for their selection of specialty beers and savory German dishes of Schnitzel, Bratwurst, Raclette, Currywurst, and Duck Ragout.
Great German food and lots of beer choices. Lots going on, but noise level can be overwhelming at times. Everyone definitely enjoyed their food and it came out hot and perfectly done.
Very good, as usual. Newly expanded menu offers more choices for everyone. Still a tad pricey but overall, this place is recommended.
We had a lovely experience at Rothbard. We sat down in time for the end of happy hour and started off with a pretzel and pickle bowl. The pork shoulder was delicious as was the Schnitzel. The sauerbraten was tender and flavorful. We will definitely be coming back to try more of the menu!
Everything was great
Mussels and Fries were amazing! Would definitely go again. Ambiance was great for date night.
Get the Abe Froman. You won’t be disappointed! Says for 3-4 but can be finished off by 2!
Great food and great service! The platter with the fondue for the table was excellent and so was the platter with the different types of sausage. Tap beer was excellent and the waitress was attentive and pleasant!! The ambiance was very good too, overall excellent experience. We will be back :)
A warm place for the cold season, Rothbard is the place to be this fall. With shareable sides, hardy portions and something new, fresh and seasonal there is something for everyone. I highly recommend bring both friends and family from out of town since the low key atmosphere is just what you need when you want to dine and chat for a few hours over a delicious meal and drinks.
Went for restaurant week but the menu was poor so we ordered off the regular menu
Beer and wine good
Service very good
Service was not great
Good food. Good beer. Large portions. Could use more seating once the patio closes for the weather, otherwise, a reservation is a must for the weekends.
We had the BEST time at Rothbard. We had a family dinner to celebrate my mother’s 90th birthday and they could not have been nicer or more accommodating. We had the back room to ourselves, so it was very quiet, and the waiter was excellent! My mom is European so enjoyed the cuisine immensely and it was a very special night. The restaurant was spot on!!! Thank you Rothbard!
Haxn = Heavenly. And I've been to Germany six times. This was really, really good.. and the spaetzle.. the way it was herbed and seasoned- it was right on time. Attentive service and friendly staff and a great selection of meats and cheeses. I'll definitely be back when back in Westport. The live music and the outdoor seating only sealed the deal. My only regret? Not saving room for dessert.
Good food- portions are uneven- Some are very generous while other are not. Quality is consistently good, however. Would appreciate a list of draft beer selections on the menu.
Excellent food. The chicken liver pâté with the Schmalz was sinfully good . Steak cooked to perfection and the wiener schnitzel never disappoints. Amazing beer menu , and the Farewell My Lovely cocktail (Pampelmuse vodka) was a summer delight. Can a a little noisy , but great service and a comfortable place to spend time with friends.
German restaurants are not easy to find and this one was very good. We will definitely be going back.
Perfect for outdoor Sunday lunch with the pupper - great menu for the humans (the Croque Madame was amazing) and the staff very thoughtfully brought over an aluminum takeout container with water for the dog.
A real treat, unusually fine German cuisine in a great atmosphere. Could not ask for more from a dining experience! Highly recommended & we’ll definitely be back soon.
Been here about ten times but this time food was top notch. Excellent!
Drinks were unique and tasty. Meat and cheese platter was delicious, and beer selection and recommendation were topnotch. The wiener schnitzel was fresh and lightly breaded.
Although I don’t think they bill themselves as “authentic” I found the entrees puzzling. Clearly leaning in German/Swiss style their takes on classics don’t work for me. I’ve never seen roesti like theirs more like a knish than anything else. Good beer selection and the apps are fun though.
Great vibe- wicked cool
The food was terrific and allowed our group to try a variety. The beer selection is broad and unique.
However, the reservation system was terrible. We had an 8pm res and were not seated until after 9 and after several complaints. Granted, there was a group that wouldn’t budge after they’d paid but we hoped the staff would have encouraged them to move on. Once the manager was involved, he was understanding and solved it. The restaurant was very nice and gave us a big discount on our tab. Even with the res issue, we would return- great ambiance, food and drink.
Amazing night out with friends at Roth’s! Make sure the get the pork confit app’ it was to die for! Pair it with a boot of beer! Highly recommend this spot!
Food is expensive and very good. Service is unremarkable and wine list is terrible.
The only issue was they didn’t have a table ready within 20 minutes of the reservation. Still, I love German food and beer and the atmosphere was great.
Food is fantastic. It’s our favorite dinner out, really.
It’s very noisy and the back room lacks the charm of the front bar. Tv showing random b&w movies is just weird.
But we live it and will return again and again.
Great food, very friendly wait staff but seemed understaffed and food was extremely slow to come out... an hour from the time we ordered entrees. Will go back, hoping this was an anomaly.
My son and I both ordered schnitzel. Having recently returned from a snchitzel fest in Austria, my son rated this on par with what we had there. His only gripe was that the linongberry jam which accompanied could have been bigger. And on crowded evenings the food can take a while.
Very cozy and inviting small restaurant in Westport, CT. Food is very good but wine choices are disappointing. Nonetheless, a very nice evening was had by all.
We love to come here. Especially when it’s cold out, the hearty fare and cozy ambience hits the right notes every time
The food and service were great.
We ordered the Abe Froman, sample platter for the table. It was amazing. We have also had the Schnitzel, Roasted Brussel Sprouts and baked spaetzle. If you're looking for authentic German Cuisine, this is the place to go. I would also recommend the house Pilsner on tap.
The food was definitely not worth the price. The schnitzel was huge but rubbery and the breading was thick and a bit soggy. Pork belly was all fat, no crust and little flavor. Such a disappointment
Found this place by chance on New Year’s Eve 2017 and thoroughly enjoyed it. This was our 4th visit. Unfortunately it’s been less and less memorable each time.
I am native born German and appreciate the way they (used) do traditional and modern food. Sausages are now mealy and disintegrate, schnitzel are drier and drier, spaetzle is more and more gooey with far too much oil. Cheese servings are stingier and stingier.
Service has gotten slower each time as well. Not just time to get food out, but also time to get something as simple as more water, another round of drinks - whatever. This, the fourth time we’ve been here has been the least enjoyable.
On Friday evening we had a reservation for 5 people and were seated promptly. Things were slow but tolerable until the busboy abruptly and rudely cleared everything from our table in mid conversation with saying a word to us at the end of the meal. In fact, basically snatched the water bottle from my hand. We were in the midst of a rather nice family discussion until this happened.
Moments later, while processing the sudden absence of anything in the table, the manager came over to say that the table was needed for another large party - which is and of itself an entirely reasonable request as two our of party had left. He offered us another table and said that was what the busboy had been intending to convey.
I told him his request was understandable and we would have been happy to move had he actually asked us BEFORE his busboy simply cleared our table without a word. It would have been no different had he used his arm and swept it all into the floor instead. This is not how you get clients to stay in your establishment.
Instead of staying and further rewarding the rudeness, slow service and poor communication, we went to Spotted Horse to continue our evening and had a lovely time. The combination of this degradation in quality and service puts this place on the “was good, time to avoid” list from here on out.
Very quiet for Sat night, but place has a cool vibe with good food
Great beer selection. Very helpful serving staff. Nice atmosphere. Good German food, albeit not inventive or creative. Way too loud to talk.
It is hard to find a restaurant with all the European food options offered by Rothbard's. The beer selection is fantastic and those we had were excellent. The food choices were varied and our wursts and schnitzels were good. It was a busy Saturday night so the chefs were probably too busy to pay their best attention to each order, but no complaints. A previous lunch their had provided an outstanding experience.
It was our second time here, and we will come back. Overall food was good, especially the appetizer platter. Everyone who had schneitzal loved it. I tried the daily special and was a bit disappointed; meatballs in a brown sauce over mashed potatoes and broccoli rabe. Flavors were excellent, but meatballs were a bit hard and dry. Correcting that would make the dish a 10
