About Robert Burns Hotel
The Robert Burns Hotel is the home of truly traditional Spanish cuisine, with a very Scottish name. Spaniard Urbano Gutierrez introduced the Spanish flavour to this Australian pub in 1984, back when variety in the local hospitality market was much harder to find
The Robert Burns legacy has since been passed to a new, fresh, yet still Spanish team ? who bring the authentic tastes and cultures of their homeland to the Robbie Burns on Melbourne’s iconic Smith Street.
Patrons of all kinds are welcome and our venue is family and kid-friendly, too. Dine in the restaurant, relax in the courtyard, enjoy drinks and tapas in the front bar or the wine room, and don’t forget to check out Robbie’s special Spanish flavoured events.

Robert Burns Hotel Ratings and Reviews
Texture of octopus was mushy which was weird, and even weirder that it came with mash which is also mushy. Paella was really salty and underwhelming. Very strange to have such a tiny table for Spanish dining - how to fit multiple plates of tapas, plus paella pan was bigger than the table! I would suggest having an option when booking to let guests choose or at least know that they will be seated at a high table with high chairs. Not comfortable and it was pretty cold inside as well!
Really enjoyed our visit to the Robert Burns. We were given a quick and warm welcome, and received really attentive service all night. Great menu, too (cant go past the rib-eye or barramundi) which was complemented by a very comprehensive wine list featuring some fabulous Spanish wines.
This is one of my fave places, especially for afterwork drinks.
I'm usually there every Wednesday night with the girls for happy hour. The atmosphere is great and the customer service is always excellent.
I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who is a fan of Spanish food/tapas.
Croquettes and squid ink paella is amazing!
Have been to RB many times. Service as always fantastic and staff assistance with Spanish wines spot on as usual. It was a little nosier than usual with a table of young children. The starters/tapas were wonderful, again as usual. Our friends from Sydney were very impressed. Unfortunately the 2 paellas we ordered, which are usually the highlight of any night at RB, were very disappointing. Both were overcooked and quite dry. This was strange as they came out very quickly if anything after the starters.
Have never had anything but first class food here so hope this was a one off.
The booking was messed up, the table was not ready, we waited and then suddenly we were told the kitchen was about to Close and they had forgotten we had not been seated. This is usually a great Restaurant but this time, one of dishes (platter of sausages) was extremely salty, and the other (stuffed pimientos) was cold. Management and Chef Needs a Little kick in the behind to provide the great Food we expect from this lovely Restaurant!
I started with pre-drinks at the bar. The chorizo tapas were great. Unfortunately, the service was slow, one plate was forgotten and the service not very forthcoming. Many people who came after us seemed to be getting their food before us. During the dining experience the same waitress came to check on me with a different set of friends. She was more agreeable and the service and food was better. This was a nostalgic visit so a bit disappointed it wasn't all as pleasant as many years ago
Beautiful food. Service was great .
The only thing that let the experience down was the state of the ladies bathroom.
The toilets were not clean. We got there at 12.30 for lunch which meant it had not been open very long. Ine of the cubicles was unusable which meant it had not been checked from the night before.
Fabulous decor, warm, cosy atmosphere. A good small dining space - not crammed or too noisy. Great, friendly, knowledgeable Spanish staff. Fast service didn't have to wait long at all. Easy to find a park or use public transport. We had a great dinner and I'll be going back for a drink or two in front of the fire. Food was delicious (was disappointed that they forgot to sugar my churro's). Would recommend you book to avoid missing out on a table.
The seafood paella was not as nice as what we had a number of years ago. The rice was undercooked and serving was small for the price charged. The menu was not extensive so with 3 entrees not being available on the night we were limited by what we could pick with 2 school aged kids in tow. Didn't think much of the creamy potato coquettes, they were too rich and blanch. We expect the potato wedges with aioli for accompaniment to be hot and crispy but unfortunately they were soggy.
The staff were very helpful and friendly. No trouble from any staff to explain menu or help us choose a wine. The food was amazing . There was four of us and we chose four entrees and then had the seafood paella which we all shared. The churros for dessert were delicious. I would recommend to all our friends
We have always enjoyed Spanish food and now that we are just back from a long awaited trip to Spain, we appreciate this restaurant even more. All the waiters were friendly and attentive and we enjoyed all the food and drink we ordered. The croquettes and jamon and cheese platters were particularly tasty. Unfortunately, we are not able to afford to dine here every week, but we would like to.
