Red Lantern on Riley
We have embarked on a journey to promote ethical eating by using the freshest in local sustainable and organic produce. It is our dream to leave as light an environmental footprint as possible.
Our family’s secret recipes, skills and techniques have been passed down to us. We have learned that above all, the sourcing of good produce, simplicity in presentation and preparation with the slowness of good omen should always be the core of our approach.
Set within a designer space reminiscent of French Colonial Vietnam, Red Lantern on Riley offers all the favourites of the original Red Lantern, with a greater focus on shared dishes. Mixed with the nostalgia of Indochine and the personal quirkiness of the Nguyen family, Red Lantern on Riley is an experience to share with your friends and family.
Dinner: Tuesday to Sunday 6:00pm - late
There is a Wilson Parking garage located less than 50 metres from the restaurant at 70 Riley Street, Darlinghurst.
Food and service was good but not great. No wow factor given the principal is a celebrity chef. While our overall experience was enjoyable we did not leave with any great memories of the place.
Finally got to try this restaurant and it didn't disappoint. The food was exceptional as was the service. Highly recommended.
High quality food. Friendly service, including the chef coming out to our table in person to clarify my partner's dietary requirements. And a pleasant atmosphere.
Fresh, well balanced, authentic meal. Friendly and attentive service. Second time and will definitely come again.
Lovely setting. A tad noisy. Wait staff were very attentive, enthusiastic and helpful. The food was nice, but lacked a fresh vibrant Vietnamese feel. Dishes sometimes a little heavy on the chili.
I'm not one to complain, but I was just so disappointed by my experience at Red Lantern last night. I guess this was partly because I had very high expectations, given it had been some time since my last visit and it was an incredibly special evening that I had planned with my teenage son. In short, the service was slow and innefficient (had to pour our own drinks most times!), the $45 angus dish was as small as an entree and so tough we could barely chew through it, the atmosphere was hostile.
We enjoyed the food but the drink prices are ridiculous. if your paying $20 for a cocktail it should come in a glass of equal proportion. The cheapest red wine is the house and starts at $55.00 (that's offensive) Staff were lovely - the two of them!
We are visitors from Melbourne and this is our second visit to Luke Nguyen's Sydney restaurant, and our first to this location. This visit did not disappoint - the quality of the produce, coupled with perfectly balanced seasoning, and presentation, made every dish an OMG one. The attentive and friendly service topped it off. The black sticky rice (with jackfruit and wrapped in banana leaf) was the stand-out dish for us. A real winner!
Absolutely amazing. I'm sure my scores look like a massive cop-out, but I honestly couldn't fault anything from the evening. Food was amazing, service was always attentive but never intrusive, Chef Jensen came out to the floor a number of times....I was blown away. I have wanted to dine here for years, and I came with the hope that I could do a tasting menu and tick it off the list, but I can't not come back again. A real treat, thank you :)
Every part of this dining experience was excellent! From outstanding cocktails - the Spicy Sapa with tequila and chilli a standout. Every dish in the tasting menu a party on the palate. Attentive service and fantastic vibe. And a surprise sparkler in the dessert platter for the birthday boy. We couldn't be more delighted with this wonderful evening.
My husband and I recently dined here for our 10 year wedding anniversary. We had the " Saigon Scrumptious" tasting menu and it was exactly that - scrumptious! All servings were very generous and so tasty. The wine list had a large range to choose from too. The service we received from all staff on the evening was exceptional.
A special thank you to the team at the Red Lantern for the unexpected but very appreciated complimentary celebratory glass of sparkling at the end of our meal.
Beaut food, fine dining, pleasant efficient serivce and overall great ambience
amazing! Food was great and the staff were amazing
The Red Lantern has a warm friendly atmosphere. The food was tasty with delicate flavours. The staff were attentive, helpful and willing and able to cater to allergies. The different courses were timed perfectly.
The food was divine and the service was excellent. Probably not value for money, but who cares, it was a lovely evening out.
Great food and excellent service. Dined with American friends who had not tried this style of Vietnamese fusion before - they were lost for words and will make sure they return here on their next Sydney visit. This is a venue where we gladly take overseas guests knowing the food will be wonderful and varied. the restaurant is small enough to be intimate, but large enough for a great atmosphere.
Incredible food and value for money
Enjoyed the food & wine matching was very nice
Fantastic food - I don't usually eat tofu but even that was delightful. Every meal was a taste sensation
Great good, great service and great ambiance.
Enjoyable meal very good service
From the moment you walk into the restaurant the waiters are very intentive, catering to your needs. Service is prompt but unhurried and service time between courses excellent. We opted for the Saigon scrumptious, as it was a special occasion and could not decide what to have from the individual a la carte menu. We could not fault any of the dishes but the scallops and Riverine black Angus dishes were stand out . Would thoroughly recommend Red Lantern restaurant &we will definitely be returning
Phenomenal. We had a superb experience at Red Lantern, and would highly recommend. Having been an avid user of Mark Jensen's The Urban Cook since 2012, the food was what we went for - and it did not disappoint. On top of that, we were treated to great service, and an excellent vibe.
After being abroad for 10 years and following Luke, his travels and establishments on instagram , we were very excited to try Red Lantern in it’s new home on Riley St however the food was quite ordinary overall. Disappointed unfortunately.
Great food and service.
2nd visit - amazing food, disappointed with service this visit, menu not explained, water not topped up til asked, was slightly jealous that table next to us had very attentive waiter
Absolutely loved this restaurant.... I want to go back...the food was amazing...melted in your mouth.
Great food and flavours, great service.
Had a beautiful meal for our 20th anniversary at Red Lantern . Staff were fantastic, polite , friendly and helpful. A little more expensive than somewhere we'd usually eat but well worth it.
Highly recommend Red Lantern.
An absolutely wonderful meal... Beautifully presented, flavoursome and fresh yet unpretentious. All staff took care to ensure out needs were met, and expectation exceeded. Will definitely return.
My boyfriend and I last had dinner at Red Lantern 2 years ago and had a fantastic evening. I would say one of the dishes in the Hanoi Hunger was average compared to the others.
Since then they have clearly refined the menu which didn’t fail to deliver on every course. Truly wonderful.
The service is also efficient and friendly without being intrusive.
One of the best restaurants in Sydney.
We were exciting to have this booking but the mood went down hill when getting the food.
- Goi mit: a bit salty, no texture, just like a paste, 18.00
- Banh xeo: cold, salty nuoc cham, 32.00
- Cari De: just okay, 42.00
- Bo Luc Lac: cold again, elastic which is might be not premium meat or too well done, 45.00
- Kem flan: too sweet, the caramel was not bitter a bit as I had when I was young. But could understand this is fusion, 16.00.
Decorating is beautiful, atmosphere was nice, service was good.
We were ready to pay premium price for excellent quality dishes but unfortunately it didn’t. Maybe we paid too much for the name of Luke Nguyen. Sorry.
Fantastic Vietnamese restaurant. We opted for the $75 Head tasting menu and absolutely loved it. Great variety , extremely fresh and outstanding quality.
Service was excellent . Attentive and knowledgeable .
We will certainly be back. Loved it
Went for the banquet and was fed extremely well. Food and service was excellent.
An authentic culinary experience that only Mark & Luke can provide. Consistency is key and the food is always consistent in quality and taste. They clearly use the freshest ingredients and you never walk away wanting more. The service is friendly and waitstaff are knowledgeable about the menu. For that romantic night for 2, dinner with friends or a Friday business lunch, Red Lantern is the place to go.
Excellent food excellent service excellent atmosphere
The staff were very attentive and pleasant. We felt the tables were a little too close together, especially since they were small intimate tables of two. We were almost brushing thighs!!! Once the restaurant filled up the noise level increased which helped a little. The food was really good and the wines that were matched were perfect for each course (we had the seafood tasting menu). We felt the wine prices were very expensive with nothing under the $60 mark for a bottle!
We had a lovely night. When we got there at 6.00. Two of the staff were on the computer and ignored 3 groups of customers. Girl in floral dress eventually apologised for the rudeness. She was the most rude. The rest of the evening was lovely. Good food . Good wine. Staff very attentive . Some of the staff are characters . One of the waiters wore a dress. He was very good at his job . The food was good. The Wine was good. We will go back. Rough start ended well though .
excellent Vietnamese cuisine.
