Red Lantern on Riley
We have embarked on a journey to promote ethical eating by using the freshest in local sustainable and organic produce. It is our dream to leave as light an environmental footprint as possible.
Our family’s secret recipes, skills and techniques have been passed down to us. We have learned that above all, the sourcing of good produce, simplicity in presentation and preparation with the slowness of good omen should always be the core of our approach.
Set within a designer space reminiscent of French Colonial Vietnam, Red Lantern on Riley offers all the favourites of the original Red Lantern, with a greater focus on shared dishes. Mixed with the nostalgia of Indochine and the personal quirkiness of the Nguyen family, Red Lantern on Riley is an experience to share with your friends and family.
Dinner: Tuesday to Sunday 6:00pm - late
There is a Wilson Parking garage located less than 50 metres from the restaurant at 70 Riley Street, Darlinghurst.
Enjoyable evening but not as exciting food wise as the last time we went. Saying that the goat curry was absolutely delicious. The setting is beautiful. Good food, sometimes great food, sometimes exceptional food.
I have been wanting to dine at Red Lantern since the days it was still in Crown Street but never quite made it. Needless to say I was totally blown away by the quality (and quantity) of the food, the service and value for money. As we were a group of 5 dining to celebrate my birthday, we tried the ‘Saigon ‘Sumptuous’ Tasting Menu. What can I say? For $89 per person it offers exceptional value, will leave you bursting at the seams, wanting to return as soon as you can and raving to friends. 👍
It’s one of our favourites. We love so much about Red lantern. The food is exceptional, service brilliant. Every time we visit we keep being wowed. Thank you another great night.
Positives: An all-round very enjoyable dining experience. Dishes varied, complex & evocative. Decor pleasing to the eye.
Negatives: Seats hard on the buttocks and appear to be cheap, tables are quite small for meals that are banquet-type, which constricts the placement of dishes and requires re-positioning of crockery and glassware each time a new dish is served. This offers little opportunity to compare remnants of an earlier dish with the flavours of a later dish as the table has to partially cleared to accomodate the new arrival . No hot/warm water in the toilets strikes me as poor standard for hygiene in general, which I see in too may restaurants these days. A little warmth to generate the cleaning properties of the soap are not an environmental waste, rather an enhancement of the cleansing process.
Overall, this is my third visit to the facility and I have enjoyed all three and will return.
Thanks for the opportunity to comment.
Excellent modern Vietnamese food.
A worthwhile dining experience 😀
I had dinner with friend on a Friday night. I've dined here in the past and the place does not disappoint. We were interested in some good food, wine and great service. We got exactly what we wanted. I will definitely be back.
The food was delicious, we had exceptional service from the time we arrived, until we left. Perfect timing between our courses, in other words, not being rushed through our meal.
Your food and service was fantastic .
will be back soon .
We had the Saigon Banquet. The servings were quite generous. The food was fantastic as was the service. Very innovative menu. A unique dining experience. We went on a Wednesday night. The place was packed, so book ahead and enjoy. Ron
Having never been to Red Lantern and watching Luke cooking we had very high hopes for great food and experience but really very disappointing. We had a tasting set menu but food lack any wow particularly for the price. Indeed the food was rather mechanical. Wine list was good albeit limited choices. Service was abysmal. We were largely ignored and forgotten whereas we could see other tables being pampered. We spent $600 for 4 people which is a lot. Sorry but cannot recommend.
Nice food good service but nothing special. Very noisy. Great decor though.
A lovely Friday evening meal for two. The ambience, location and service were excellent, we tried the degustation menu were all the dishes were very good although not excellent.
We'd recommend you trying the Red Lantern if you haven't been here before
Always a treat dining a Red Lantern- food is always great, value for money, friendly staff and always welcomed.
Great value tasting plates for a variety of tastes. The service was excellent and the food was amazing.
We so enjoyed everything at Red Lantern. The staff went out of their way for us and were engaging and friendly. We can’t wait to return. The food is delicious.
Tasting menu with wine pairing. Outstanding!
The tasting menu never ceases to amaze and delight.
Lovely calm environment and decor. We chose the Saigon scrumptious tasting menu consisting of 8 dishes plus a dessert platter. We absolutely loved 4 of the dishes which fitted to our taste, the other 4 were tasty and by the 8th dish we were very full. Service was friendly.
Great food and service was a pleasure to dine.
Mum loves watching Luke Nguyen's cooking on TV so we surprised her with a visit to Red Lantern for her 73rd birthday. We weren't disappointed! The service was impeccable and the food was so delicious and fresh. They happily swapped main dishes from the banquet menu for ones we preferred. They also added some extra side dishes for my sister who is vegetarian. The whole experience was very enjoyable.
We chose the Scumptious set menu which was good portions/value for money. The entrees lacked that wow factor that I was expecting. The main courses and deserts were good. Service was efficient. Not sure about the music, Madonna etc...A special touch worth mentioning, we were offered a complimentary drink since it was a special occasion.
Food was very good, but expensive, and the wine list was super expensive with the cheapest white starting at $60.
Disappointing. Went here a few years ago after visiting Vietnam & raved about this place. This time the pork belly was not hot enough & the spring rolls were mainly filled with noodles & not much other filling & were quite chewy. The restaurant wasn’t busy & we were sat right next to another table where the chairs were nearly bumping & had to move a ladies bag out of the way to sit down. We couldn’t understand why the waitress would sit us there when there were so many other free tables.
From the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome - like we were old friends who visit regularly. The person who looked after us was knowledgeable and recommended the tasting menu - so so happy he did as we don’t normally do that but it was amazing! The timing of each plate was perfect, the wine delicious and it was a highlight of our trip - we’re already planning to get back there!
Impeccable food, service and ambience. Fautless dining experience.
Finding Vietnamese food in Australia that matches Vietnamese food in Vietnam is a challange. Red Lantern does it.
The food and service was perfectly delightful. The menu is so exciting. I haven't stopped raving about our amazing meal. This is my second time at The Red Lantern but my first time at this Riley Street location (Bourke Street's acoustics are better for date night)
I had heard much about this restaurant. As a visitor to Sydney I booked well in advance so as not to miss out. The restaurant is authentically decorated with a great ambience. However, most importantly, the food is stunning. We ordered the $75 a head menu. Every dish was delicious! Mince wrapped in betel leaves, goat curry, just to same a very few. Sadly no room to try dessert. Next time! Great service too. Our waitress was friendly and helpful. Can’t wait to visit again.
Great food and ambience at a premium price.
Every single dish I tried from the 'Saigon Scrumptious' set menu was incredible. This is a 'tasting menu' type arrangement. I'm a very fussy eater with basic tastes. I didn't realise why people make such a fuss of fancy restaurants. Well I was very wrong! The flavour sensations from all of these dishes was unbelievable.
Every dish was absolutely 100% perfection.
My brother arranged this meal as a birthday surprise for my Dad.
I very highly recommend Red Lantern on Riley Vietnamese Restaurant!
It was a haven in busy Darlinghurst, like stepping back into a traditional Vietnamese restaurant. Food was delicious, we had the sampler lunch banquet so able to taste a wider selection of their dishes. Goi Cuon(soft paper rolls) generously filled, Goi Ga (salad) delicious, fish fillets delicately spiced, goat curry tasty & tender, beef strips beautifully cooked (apprehensive abt oyster sauce but very subtlety used) very good experiment will be back
From arrival at the front door to our departure ( 3 hours later) a perfect experience and our guests were delighted.
we loved our night at the Red Lantern. So much thought into the food and environment and friendly helpful staff.
A disappointment. Dingy location and ambience. Wait staff were friendly and efficient, however food was ordinary, did not live up to hype of being a Luke Nguyen establishment. Have had much better Asian/Vietnamese elsewhere.
Food and service was good but not great. No wow factor given the principal is a celebrity chef. While our overall experience was enjoyable we did not leave with any great memories of the place.
Finally got to try this restaurant and it didn't disappoint. The food was exceptional as was the service. Highly recommended.
High quality food. Friendly service, including the chef coming out to our table in person to clarify my partner's dietary requirements. And a pleasant atmosphere.
Fresh, well balanced, authentic meal. Friendly and attentive service. Second time and will definitely come again.
Lovely setting. A tad noisy. Wait staff were very attentive, enthusiastic and helpful. The food was nice, but lacked a fresh vibrant Vietnamese feel. Dishes sometimes a little heavy on the chili.
