Red Gum BBQ
BBQ tastes better when shared with friends and family.
Loving what you do shines through.” — Red Gum BBQ's Guiding Principles
BBQ to Southerners is not simply food but a way of life. It's the food you grew up on, the food you share with friends over a beer and a warm night and the food your family heatedly debate over who does it best. In moving to Australia, we were thrilled to find Melburnians, and in turn, Peninsula folk, feel just as passionately about their food. The marrying of these two homes was the concept for Red Gum. Using traditional methods of cooking Southern BBQ at low heat over many hours, Pit Master Martin uses native woods to flavour the meat. Martin’s passion for food, creating an authentic & high quality product has translated into amazing BBQ. Come and enjoy the smoke with us!
I have already recommended your restaurant to all my friends, food was delicious
Most amazing lunch we have had in a long time. Amazing service. Incredible food and atmosphere. We have already planned to come back!
Food was amazing, service was fantastic & the beer was awesome! We had a great night enjoying my dads 65th birthday. We will definitely be back!
Food in general was very average. We had the beef brisket which was the driest meat I've ever eaten. The cos salad was ABSOLUTELY DRENCHED in salad dressing. Had to wipe excess dressing off so I could take a bite. The waiter should have served it in a bowl with a spoon because it was pretty much a soup!
The fries were amazing, so a big plus! However, the ribs & brisket were cold and dry.
Service was fantastic a part from a chick stationed at the entry who couldn't even both acknowledging us upon entry and exit, because she was too busy on her phone.
Brisket and pulled pork were excellent, ribs are overpriced, sides were mostly very good but the fries were terrible and a very strange colour. Restaurant decor, design and seating were really good, a great place for a meal with family or friends. Good service and enough variety to suit everyone in our group.
Great food and people everytime we visit!
Very authentic southern style BBQ, the smoked flavors are awesome throughout all the meats.
Would highly recommend visiting with a group of people so you can order everything on the menu to share.
Great location in the peninsula, and amazing brisket!
Although the food was nice, it definite was not value for money. It was far too expensive for the little amount of food we received. Was shocked when we got the bill.
Food was fairly good, a little expensive. Expect no change from $50 per person. Briskett was the best, followed closely by the chillie fries (they're worth the $s) Enjoyed the night out.
My 3rd visit back and it's still fantastic!
It's hard not to want seconds and third servings at Red Gum, so I'll have to continue to make visits. Better than the BBQ joints that we have in Melbourne, the meat that Red Gum serves is simply amazing. The fries were on the soggy side in this instance, but that would be the only slight critique.
Very relaxed experience
They have made an old garage into quite an entertaining space. Casual with very pleasant service, but they food was not well flavoured and the meat portions were ridiculously small. Only 4 small pork ribs for something like $38! Unfortunately they have fallen well short of true Southern food in both flavour and substance, they just havent mastered the art of a real Southern BBQ. The french fries were the best tasting item, which probably says it all.
Has a terrific and long over due date night on the weekend. Food was exceptional, service was friendly and our orders arrived quickly. Will definitely be back!
Grate food, great atmosphere all round grate place for calibrations or just meeting friends, great time had by all.
Service was very slow.
We really enjoyed our experience at Red Gum. The only thing was that the fried pickles could have been more tangy and dilly if that makes sense lol
Thank you, we will be back for sure and will recommend it to friends and family
Very good overall - howver we had both beef dishes and they had a strange taste - not sure if it was the American bbq taste?
Amazing food!!!! Cannot fault any of the dishes we had received. Didnt have to wait long for our food.
Nice looking venue but definitely not value for money.
Fantastic dinner venue. My partner and I were very impressed and will be more than happy to recommend to others . Food was delicious, service was outstanding and atmosphere was devine. 5 stars from me thank you
Great BBQ food and well thought out concept from menu to presentation. Only downer on our visit was the staff needed to be less obvious in churning us through. Our water glasses were all taken early, we were asked if we had finished about 10 times in 5 minutes.
Amazing as always! Brisket, broccoli, & beer. Yum yum yum!
Took my partner up there as we’d been meaning to go. He is super fussy and he loved it. The atmosphere and how they’ve done the place is great 😊
We were not that hungry, so only ordered the pulled pork and the beef brisket, and some salads. The meat had good flavour, the bbq sauce was yummy. The salads were also good, but a bit on the sweet side.
Fantastic format and good atmosphere. Sadly let down by the 40 minute wait time for serving and the consistent lack of items that had "run out" - Root Beer, deserts and pork. Staff apologized profusely and offered an extra serving
Very cool place, delicious food, very friendly staff with excellent service in a beautiful part of the world!
Just got back from Texas a couple of months ago and ate some off the best BBQ meat ever! This is on par with it! This place is a hidden gem! Will 100% be coming back!
Probably the best time we’ve eaten there. Busy but attentive staff, food was timely and delicious. I love recommending places to my guests at my work, then have it be just as good as I describe to others..
Unfortunately service was rather slow and very uncoordinated
Pork ribs seemed to be a bit lacking based on the cost
Service was very ordinary
I was shocked by the price of the pork ribs. $36 for a small rack of 5 ribs is outrageous.
Great food, great local beers and relaxed atmosphere....can’t go wrong, tick!
I took my son for a meal at your facility.
Overall food was great.
Only complaint is I ordered the beef rib and was shocked at price when I paid the bill. My fault for not asking but as price is really high $37 for one rib for my 13 year old son - maybe the waiter should make clear the price at time of ordering.
I know you are restricted by supply but $90 for two with no alcohol is getting up to 5star standards.
I think you will price yourself out of a casual lunch. For me I would come back but only every couple of years at that rate.
It was a birthday celebration.
Brilliant service and kid friendly. Children’s play area was great. Food was sensational, although not great value. Beer and drinks great - excellent range. Excellent family and friends location.
Came on the recommendation of a friend and it didn't disappoint. Great locally produced food. Extensive local drinks list. Family friendly! Ticked all of our boxes. We will be back!
Expensive food for the size of the meals. Everything comes out in a share platter but there was barely enough food for the four of us to share. It was also cold. It has so much potential but Won’t be returning
Great venue, good service and can’t go past the brisket!
Great venue and concept. Hidden away but almost guaranteed that you won't visit just once.
Delicious food and friendly staff. Great atmosphere and fun to see the meat smokers in action. Good menu for sharing.
