Red Gum BBQ
BBQ tastes better when shared with friends and family.
Loving what you do shines through.” — Red Gum BBQ's Guiding Principles
BBQ to Southerners is not simply food but a way of life. It's the food you grew up on, the food you share with friends over a beer and a warm night and the food your family heatedly debate over who does it best. In moving to Australia, we were thrilled to find Melburnians, and in turn, Peninsula folk, feel just as passionately about their food. The marrying of these two homes was the concept for Red Gum. Using traditional methods of cooking Southern BBQ at low heat over many hours, Pit Master Martin uses native woods to flavour the meat. Martin’s passion for food, creating an authentic & high quality product has translated into amazing BBQ. Come and enjoy the smoke with us!
The food was generally pretty good without being amazing. We had the pulled pork, brisket, mac and cheese and beans and pulled pork.
The two pork dishes were tender but the sauce was extremely sweet. The brisket had a good smoky flavour but a little on the dry side. The mac n cheese was decent enough.
The "Fire" sauce was not at all spicy and again very sweet.
However, the beers in the tasting paddle were excellent and definitely worth trying. The place was very well decked out with big wooden tables and the smokers at the back. There was a small play area in the corner too which was great for the kids. Overall, a pretty solid option for a feed.
Great kids area, very relaxing good food good company great atmosphere great afternoon
We ate here for the first time for our ten year anniversary. I would highly recommend. The food was amazing. Pricing was very good considering the portions delivered. I look forward to returning.
Really nice food, pretty expensive though, really.
Excellent experiences on a Saturday afternoon, early dinner. Great food, exactly as marketed and an experience that exactly matched the promised offering. Good service, and great food most importantly, excellent beer and beverage selection to match. Great for a big group. It's not fine dining but it doesnt claim to be so hat's off to them - it's a cracking big tasty feed, something for everyone. Highly recommended.
Service was great as was the venue,. partner and son both enjoyed their meals however I had a very limited choice given that I can’t eat onion, garlic or wheat .
The restaurant was wonderful. It was inexpensive and cooked beautifully. The atmosphere was also very fun and different. Highly recommend.
Awesome rustic place to grab some real cooked meat and enjoy the ambiance.
What a beautiful present restaurant! We loved our meal at Red Gum! We will return
Large beer hall type atmosphere. Smells great, but food was average.
Food is amazing and with great service. Worth the drive from the city.
Great place for a meat feat. We all had a great time.
What a great place casual and comfortable. Enjoyed but everyone.
Great place for a gathering with friends after a hike or ride up red hill. Beer is crisp and cold, bbq is delicious and love the fact that they use a different wood from the normal hickory - brings out the meat flavor! Well done guys!
Loved everything about this place. Perhaps you could include some older children toys?I think my boys 12 & 9 would get bored quite quickly. And some live music would have been lovely too on such a nice day. The broccoli salad wasn't a huge hit as it wasn't cooked and very hard. The meat though was incredible! I'm planning on returning this long weekend! :)
The venue was lovely and great atmosphere, food was delicious and staff friendly.
Disappointing that there weren't Halloween decorations/theme as suggested.
Great place for a casual meal with friends especially if you are a meat lover. Quite expensive for hat yu receive.
The food at red gum was mind blowing, SAUCE was also spot on and so full of amazing flavors, I was in absolute meat heaven!! Such a fun and interesting atmosphere!! The wine was delicious! We will definitely be coming back very soon.
Great food, great service, great atmosphere. Loved it and thoroughly recommended.
Staff where friendly , attentive, polite and had a great sense of humour. Will vist this interesting place more often.
Excellent food, great atmosphere and friendly service, what more could you want.
Overall very happy. Great service , great food Would go again. 😀
Fantastic venue, classic country vibe. Worth the 1hr drive. Beautiful for functions. Friendly staff and wholesome sometimes food that will have you rolling out the door. Would love to see some fresh salads added to the menu for a more healthy less heavy side option. Definitely worth the visit.
Heard nothing but good things about it, so had to go check it out. The food selection was great. The meat was outstanding. Couldn’t have agreed with all of the great things that had been said. Delicious
Thought the meat and chips were cold when delivered
Tables were sticky
Table service was good
This was our first time visiting Red Gum BBQ and it sure won't be are last....We had a family day out for lunch and enjoyed every minute from the great food, friendly staff and wonderful atmosphere. So glad we made the trip down from Melbourne to visit this place and we will be back soon...
Wow! Heard great things about Red Gum BBQ, but experiencing it it person definitely exceeded expectations. It was difficult to choose a favourite from the pulled pork, beef brisket or short rib - and the fries were sensational!
Oh - and while you're there, grab one of their sauces to go - i loved it so much, i grabbed 3!
Great food and atmosphere!! We will definitely be back
I was looking for good BBQ. Pork Ribs were dry and cold, chicken tender but very dry. For dessert I had the brownies under cooked. The Cornbread, sausage and home made Lemonade were all good.
Great friendly service. Top notch food and atmosphere.
It was a great afternoon. Service was lively and attentive and the food ... well simply excellent
Loved the set up.
Food was lovely with minimal waiting time.
It was quite warm inside.
I wouldn’t visit on a really hot day.
Staff always attentive, excellent red wine, it’s easy, relaxed and foods consistently delicious.
We enjoyed the evening .the food is enjoyable but not very hot in temperature when it gets to the table. Not a massive choice in the sides. a green salad would be nice everything on the menu is covered in dressing.corn bread and pulled pork were the winners for us, everyone at the table agreed . The rest of the food is a personal choice if you like it or not . Waitress thou friendly was a bit absent.bathrooms could do with been kept clean and bins emptied it tells alot about a place if the bathrooms are not maintained.
Side dishes very disappointing - no flavour, salty, oily, just mayonnaise...
Nice athmosphere, good service
Great for beer/drink catch ups w friends
Loved every second we were there and instantly when we received the food we all said we need to bring our families and partners here.
Always great food and great atmosphere! We had a fun time as s family, enjoyed sharing lots of dishes and an awesome jetty road beer to go with it
It was too cold on our visit so the outdoor section was closed. The room is large with a section set aside for kids to play with toys seemingly supplied by the establishment. There are internal overhead heaters which only cover about 50% of the tables so make sure you know where you are seating .. we were next to the kids play area which did have overhead heaters. The food is as expected BBQ - with brisket, sausage (as the chicken was sold out), beef and pork ribs etc. We ordered the 1st 3 mentioned and all were fine, nothing exceptional. There are 3 in-house made sauces that are worth trying. There is an extensive sides selection .. we ordered the Mac & Cheese , Brussels Sprouts and coleslaw - the former was tasteless, the latter 2 were very good. For drinks I was over wine after a long weekend of tasting and kept to the local Red Hill beer which was great. As the restaurant started to slow down, the wait staff started talking among themselves which did not leave a good impression
Great rustic dining area, had a fantastic waitress who was informative. All food was nice, our table shared all meats except pork. For the price would of liked a bigger serving of brisket and ribs got quite pricey as per 100g, 100gms isn't a lot considering it's mainly bone.
We had a girly lunch here and had a lovely time. I’ve previously been for a friend’s birthday too in a large group and it worked well. Great for ordering a range of food from the menu and sharing. I will return :-)
