Red Gum BBQ
BBQ tastes better when shared with friends and family.
Loving what you do shines through.” — Red Gum BBQ's Guiding Principles
BBQ to Southerners is not simply food but a way of life. It's the food you grew up on, the food you share with friends over a beer and a warm night and the food your family heatedly debate over who does it best. In moving to Australia, we were thrilled to find Melburnians, and in turn, Peninsula folk, feel just as passionately about their food. The marrying of these two homes was the concept for Red Gum. Using traditional methods of cooking Southern BBQ at low heat over many hours, Pit Master Martin uses native woods to flavour the meat. Martin’s passion for food, creating an authentic & high quality product has translated into amazing BBQ. Come and enjoy the smoke with us!
Ordered together, and they serve food by weight. So the 4 of us had to share 3 Briskets
Service and food were fabulous, the surcharge for Easter Monday was a bit rich!
We returned to Red Gum BBQ as we had only been there once. When we first went their, we didn't have table service and it seemed really dark in the place with their lighting. This experience was very different. We had table service and that was fantastic - the girls that served us were fantastic. The place seemed brighter and more open. You could book online for a table of 5 which we couldn't do that previously either. We had everything served in dishes which was nice. Last time we came we had certain salads served in cardboard boxes which leaked the sauces out of them and they didn't seem as appealing. We were well attended to with drinks and food. The food came out really quickly which was great. A definite return. All the improvements have been for the better. Well done!
Great atmosphere, wonderful service, tasty food.
Bit tricky to find.
It was nice food and atmosphere.
we made advance booking through website and had no problem.
two point we notice, noise level was so high that we could hardly hear what a waitress was saying, also that will be better bit more vegetarian selection like prawn or fish veggie bbq.
I know its's meat bbq place and it was all nice ( we had pork rib, pulled pork and beef brisket). I liked you use all free range stuff.
The food was delicious and came out quickly (though there was a slight mix up with our order). The only reason for the lower rating is that upon arrival a sign on the welcome table noted at 15% public holiday surcharge. I recognise the need to pay staff appropriately on a PH but this wasn’t clearly advised at the time of booking (for which we had to hand over our credit card details and be threatened with a $50 cancellation fee) and also quite steep.
We love this place and rave about it to everyone and have also taken different families to eat here. However I found the pulled pork was very dry. ☹️
We walked away feeling rather disappointed. The food was delicious, however it was very expensive for the amount we received...the servings for the price were quite small. What disappointed us the most is that we were not told anything about the very high 15% Easter surcharge! I can understand 5%, but 15? That raised our what was already our expensive bill, up $52! No where on the website did it mention the surcharge, nor did the lady I spoke too to confirm our booking meantion it...I don’t think we will be returning...
Loved everything here! The food, ambiance, and service. Definitely going back.
Bright and efficient service. Clear service staff felt a strong sense of ownership to the establishment - B Corporation association was not surprising. Good flavour on both the BBQ pork ribs and buffalo wings although meat was on the dry side. Decaffeinated coffee here is made with instant mix, which made for a very strange macchiato - servers should check with customers if they are okay with instant coffee when orders are placed. Cornbread had the right flavour profile but an almost rubbery density instead of the light, buttery crumb typical of this bread. Great brownie. You're out of luck here if you are vegan, only one side dish had diary free options i.e. you'd have to go without sides like coleslaw and basically, a main.
It was a nice experience and very family friendly. It was pricey for what it was (meat portions were small 2 pieces of brisket for $19. We spent $123 for 2 adults and 2 kids and hubby had one glass of wine) and the kids were still a bit hungry after their meal so we had to order another serve of fries. It's great though that the food is locally sourced. Atmosphere and service was lovely.
Great food quality ! We loved every bite of our beef ribs ! They really know their meat but service in general was not the greatest. I specifically booked at 11.30 becuase “standard seating” was available but when we got to the venue we were placed at the bar ( just what I was trying to avoid), at the very corner of the bar, so this was little disappointing, which also made very difficult to get attention of waitresses during our entire stay, we had to ask dessert to someone drying dishes that didn’t know anything about the desserts available on the boards.
Lost our order. Seating was really uncomfortable. Meat all tasted the same and was over peppered. It would be good if you want somewhere different and Hipster to try. But overall we didnt enjoy our night. The Mac and Chesse was Good. Broccoli salad is very sweet. Go give it a try, it was just not my cup of tea
Food was amazing! Service was great, waiter was knowledgeable of items on menu.
Highly recommend going if your in the area.
We will be going back.
The beer and wine were great, the meat was awesome, chips were delicious. My only criticism was the salads and sides. Whilst eating delicious bbq meats with sweet sauces really needs a nice acidic vinegar to cut through richness, the sides unfortunately did not provide this as they were overly sweet. That said everything else was excellent.
Red Gum BBQ was as always delicious food served by friendly and professional staff in a wonderfully appointed room, highly recommend. Especially the brisket, just melts in your mouth.
An amazing place, sensational food and staff who were happy and wanting to service us.
This was a last minute booking, as we have young kids and needed an early seating. Such a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere. The staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. The food was delicious, quick and great value for money. We will be back again, soon!
great service to deaf group and need pen and paper ready for communication
Great food , great service, great location overall a brilliant meal each and every time this was our fifth visit and we will definitely be coming again keep up the good work
Mid-week night so quite quiet. Could not fault the food or service. Meat cooked to perfection. Good selection of local wines and craft beers. Salted caramel cheesecake to die for.
Service was great. Sides were amazing. Food was super quick. Great ambience and vibe. Wouldnt bring the oldies there, bit loud for them. Great for families with little people
AMAZING! We throughly enjoyed our lunch.... Thank you.
Never believe other people ‘s reviews .
We found everything to be of first class
standard and a very enjoyable night out.
Love this place. Only small criticisms ........ Mac and cheeses is bland. Maybe add spring onion and a sharp tasty cheeses. Also the waiters or waitresses need to ask if you’d like drinks a little more regularly.
Others than that I LOVE this place. I’ll be back
This was a great place for lunch with friends on the weekend. It's in a big barn-style room but still managed to feel cosy and was surprisingly warm (the weather was cold). Unless you have a really big group you'll have to share a long table but that wasn't an issue at all. Food is yummy and reasonably priced - our bill was $66 for 2 people. The meat was delicious and good choice of sides to accompany our choices. Sharing works well so that you can all try a bit of everything. Pretty comprehensive beer and wine list. I'd definitely go again.
Best place I havr been and have already recommended it to everyone I know!!! Planning our next visit
We had the best time here on arrival we were made to feel very welcome and things explained as it was our first visit here the food was amazing w will definitely be going back
Over priced! What more can I say. Unfortunately I don't think I will return. Even though I loved the concept.
We were there because we had a $50 voucher. I was surprised to see that the price for beef rib was $37.00. Ok, well it must be a bloody big rib for that price, WRONG!. just a single beef rib, nothing else with it. My wife had the "half" chicken. Very small size chicken for the price, and yet again, thats it, no veg, sides ect. WE shared 2 sides, broccoli salad and the slaw. Again very over priced for what they were.
Very basic for a lot of money. The drinks follow the same trend with over pricing.
Wont be back.
Very easy going atmosphere & wonderful service, delicious food.
Good food, good service, good ambience.
Will be heading back to Redgum BBQ again
Food ok but not special. Strangely sticky wooden table but price of drinks is ridiculous. And why serve wine in a glass? There are such things as “wine glasses”!
One of the finest examples of American BBQ in the state.
Delicious food, great ambiance and friendly service!
fantasric place, lovely ypung ladies who are very knowledheable about both their food and beveridges. beautiful lication. only thing missing is accommodation ;)
The meat was all excellent but the meal was let down by poor quality and expensive side dishes. Likewise the great service from two staff was let down by a waitress who obviously did not want tobe there.
Carparking needs to be looked at, very dangerous crossing road across from venue.Noise level too excessive too for a sunday afternoon, band was great just too loud.
Amazing food and experience! Can’t wait to come back again soon
Food was absolutely Delish... service on drinks was slow. Noisey but it’s a factory so what do you expect. Value was amazing and sharing plates was a good idea. Will def go back
