BBQ to Southerners is not simply food but a way of life. It's the food you grew up on, the food you share with friends over a beer and a warm night and the food your family heatedly debate over who does it best. In moving to Australia, we were thrilled to find Melburnians, and in turn, Peninsula folk, feel just as passionately about their food. The marrying of these two homes was the concept for Red Gum. Using traditional methods of cooking Southern BBQ at low heat over many hours, Pit Master Martin uses native woods to flavour the meat. Martin’s passion for food, creating an authentic & high quality product has translated into amazing BBQ. Come and enjoy the smoke with us!

Great food, with plenty for your money and tastes absolutely delicious. Fantastic service with friendly staff and a relaxed easygoing atmosphere, which is awesome when you have 2 wild toddlers! Will definitely be eating here again some time soon

Very hot inside on the day we went and there were just a couple of fans. We had to wait a while to get water but other than that, the food came out fast and it was nice. The little kids were a bit fussy with their burgers as they are very char grilled and Smokey but all adults were really happy with the food. Nice local pilsners and good quality ingredients used.

Amanda and I are regulars at Red Gum BBQ. We were remembered and thoroughly looked after.
The food was great quality and excellent value.
Our favourites were the pork and the broccoli salad.

After building up the expectation of a genuine Texan BBQ Brisket by watching numerous TV and You Tube videos of real Texas restaurants which highlighted their juicy tender flavoursome meat, I was disappointed with the dry/overcooked version that they served up here. Also, the BBQ sausage was very dry (not much fat). The southern chichen was fantastic, tasty, juicy, moist.
We got there for the 8:30pm seating and after finishing our first round of dishes, we wanted to give the brisket another chance so I highlighted the issue to the wait person with an order for some more. She returned 3 mins later stating that the kitchen had closed and apologised for not coming around earlier to check if we wanted anything else.
When I went to settle the bill I was asked for my feedback and gave it as documented here. The cashier offered to remove the Brisket from the account which I declined because we did eat the Brisket. she offered an apology and mentioned that they were having staff issue due to the recent reopening and had to close the kitchen early.
Will I go again - I think so because I think they deserve another chance, especially if I highlight the dry brisket issue when I order it again.

Serving staff were not on the ball, no shout for last food or drinks orders, no water on table, several groups were told "sorry the bar and Kitchen are now closed" no heads up!

More trained staff and supervisor required.

The hype on Red Gum is bigger than what was produced. I was disappointed in some of the food, as my expectations were higher than what I received. The staff, in general, were polite and helpful. Our waiter was MIA most of the time we were there, and with a short sitting a prompt wait person is essential.

What an absolute beautiful place for a catch up with friends/family.
I couldn’t fault a thing. Food was delicious, drinks were great and staff were brilliant!

Our waiter was amazing, one of us required dairy free and out waiter made sure this was all provided. The cooking staff also ensure we received all dairy on the side in separate bowls.
The social distasting was well done.

The waitress that served us was great.

However I was a little disappointed when I asked for some salt and pepper after tasting my meal first getting told by the male staff member that brought it out that the kitchen had put some on wasn’t that great. I get that with Covid not having shakers on the table but not a great way to respond to someone.

Always love coming here
Didn’t like being seated in the car park with a 2yr old made the booking 6 weeks earlier and were told they were booked out so had to be seated in the makeshift area. I was disappointed as my partner is a keen meat smoker and it wasn’t the experience I had talked it up to be.
Will definitely give it another go

What a disappointment. It felt like a fast food joint. We placed our order and the food literally arrived.The food was cold and very small portion size for the money.
The service was terrible and the waitress kept touching her mask which was very distracting.
I would not recommend this restaurant at all.

Amazing food - portions a little small for the price (so get ready to pay $$$) and $8 for a bottle of kombucha was a shock. However, service and food were superb !

I had previously been to Red Gum BBQ and was very excited for our friends to experience it.

Unfortunately, it did not live up to our expectations this second time. We were very disappointed with the lack of service and unfriendly staff on the day. It was a struggle to get any sort of acknowledgement when we first arrived, and when we managed to get someone's attention, we felt like it was a huge inconvenience for them.

It was extremely windy and raining, and our umbrella outside kept threatening to fly away (and almost injured someone at the next table) - this was obviously out of the staff's control, but the lack of care shown was unbelievable. We had to ask numerous times before staff moved us to a table inside.

Food was ok, but very expensive for portion sizes that seems to have shrunk.

Sad to see that this unique restaurant's standards seems to have dropped significantly.

At Redgum BBQ post Covid restrictions. The food was Amazing especially the effort made by Aimee to help with our Coeliac dietary issues

Huge fans of Red Gum BBQ & couldn’t wait to get to the Peninsula again and visit. They did an amazing job handling restrictions & im sure have had to adjust a lot to cater for these. Brisket is usually amazing but was a bit dry & cornbread was a bit over heated and hard. But disappointed ribs were not on the menu and no fried chicken available. Hopefully when things return to normality so will their service. Still love them though!

I usually like red gum its my favourite and always rave to people. But my last visit left me disappointed. No potato salad, no corn cobs, no ribs, burger only on weekdays. And to top it off the brisket was dry and the pork left much to be desired.

The food and service is second to none. My brisket and pulled pork were perfection . The chicken was heavenly. All top off with the best brownie ever!
If I could eat here every day I would! I’ll be back very very soon.

Had a really great long lunch with friends, excellent food and the server was friendly enjoyed not having huge crowds and the noise level was great for us to have a good long chat. Would recommend and will come back

The beef brisket was dry ! Had to ask for salt and pepper then it came in McDonald’s like sachets ! Wrong drink bought to table ! But then tried to bill me for the one I order which was double the price ! Condiments were bought to the table halfway through the meal ! the mixed matched cutlery Would not cut through the meat which was quite tender ! So nothing major just lots of disappointing events !

This was our first meal out of lockdown and we could not have chosen a better place. The staff was warm and welcoming, explaining the meal and discussing the drinks on the menu. The atmosphere was amazing, sitting at the best table in the outdoors. just the right amount of sun and shade. The sharing platter we chose was mouth-watering and just the right amount.
