Red Gum BBQ
BBQ tastes better when shared with friends and family.
Loving what you do shines through.” — Red Gum BBQ's Guiding Principles
BBQ to Southerners is not simply food but a way of life. It's the food you grew up on, the food you share with friends over a beer and a warm night and the food your family heatedly debate over who does it best. In moving to Australia, we were thrilled to find Melburnians, and in turn, Peninsula folk, feel just as passionately about their food. The marrying of these two homes was the concept for Red Gum. Using traditional methods of cooking Southern BBQ at low heat over many hours, Pit Master Martin uses native woods to flavour the meat. Martin’s passion for food, creating an authentic & high quality product has translated into amazing BBQ. Come and enjoy the smoke with us!
Awesome ambiance, and amazing food. Went there twice in one week and have already recommended it to several people. Very friendly staff and service!
The brisket and pilled pork were both delicious. The chips and salads were also very tasty. The staff were helpful and pleasant.
Birthday lunch for 2 people.
Excellent friendly and knowledgeable staff.
Great service !
Good variety of mains and sides.
Local made sauces, beers and ciders.
Loved this place. Would drive down from Melbourne just for the amazing food!
First visit, will definitely be back - should have booked a bit sooner than we eventually did to make sure we had a more preferable time. Would definitely recommend. Child friendly, with decent play area in the corner.
Over priced, and not particularly tasty unfortunately.
The service was great, food was great. Felt the price was extreme - $21 for 3 slices of beef. The seats were extremely uncomfortable. For the price of the food would expect comfortable seats but I get that’s not the vibe you are going for.
Birthday, although it wasn’t actually acknowledged
Absolutely define food, service was amazing and the atmosphere was perfect.. will be back again.
I took my husband here as a surprise belated birthday dinner. He loves to smoke meat so this was the perfect place and it didn’t disappoint.
The food was delicious and we were glad we took the waiters advice on how to order - it was so filling (we kept eating anyway)
Would definitely recommend to anyone - great place also for families (you don’t have to worry about hushing kids)
Food was excellent! We took the waitresses advice on ordering 1 meat & side per person to share. When it came out we thought it looked small but it was very filling. We went on a cool night so bring a jacket as it isn’t that warm in there. Great service & staff did not hover!!!
Everything was perfect for our large group of 8! Pork ribs and beef brisket were melt-in-your-mouth and so flavourful. Smoked chicken, eggplant and other sides were amazing too! Great selection of beer. Gave 4 instead of 5 stars as flies were annoying us throughout the meal in late spring / summer.
Everything was lovely would have liked 4 slices of brisket rather than the 3 for value for money but everything else was great. Thankyou
One word AMAZING!!! As soon as the walked through the doors of this old truck mechanic shed we knew it was going to be a fantastic experience & tasty feast !! At that was just what it was!! Not to forget our service was just gorgeous!! We cannot wait to go back!! Just wish we didn’t live so faraway!!
We love it! Food was delicious. Service was great.
Beautiful food the Beef was amazing and the Pork Ribs were perfect !
Food was amazing but service was poor. We had to wait to be acknowledged and seated and then advised we would have our order taken shortly. 20 minutes later we have to approach staff to see what was happening and order directly.
Same when trying to pay.
Great atmosphere, fantastic service and really tasty food. Pretty good wine list.
Food is to die for! A little pricey but worth it. The venue is also really nice and. Service was great.
The barbeque was excellent and the service friendly and helpful. It was impossible to catch the waitresses eye though to order something more. All the sauces were very sweet- no doubt authentic to the region. The chips appeared precooked and then kept warm so were very poor quality and a rip off at $17. Overall great food but very pricey for what you get.
We felt the meal was overpriced for what we received. Sold out of brisket, my ribs were dry, Caesar salad was very confused, and Mac and cheese was very average. We wanted to love it but unfortunately won’t be returning.
The food was good and we are happy to pay a bit more for ethical meats, but $12 for a single sausage and $21 for two slices of beef brisket seemed a bit much, plus the $9 for a pretty small bowl of fries. We did enjoy the food, but for the price we won't be eating here again.
Music was a bit loud for our group of "oldies" but we had a good time. Definitely a venue for a group not just a couple. We would probably be more comfortable in a chair with a back however we can see it's targeted to a younger demographic.
Food serving size was not as expected. Left there still feeling a bit hungry.
Service, atmosphere and side dishes were great! The smoked brisket and ribs were a let down. Very dry unfortunately.
Great place for a relaxed lunch. BBQ meats were great as were the salads and accompaniments. Service was super friendly and efficient.
Food is always good, service could improve, maybe assign staff to certain tables & l don’t like the 1.5hr, eat drink, then get out, Cheers
Found it to be a bit pricey for the food that we got. Not terrible but wouldn’t go out of my way to go again.
One of many visits to Red Gum BBQ and as always very busy. Food was every bit as good as usual. I do feel that they cram a lot of people into one table which is a little annoying. Also I had made my booking on Open Table and while we were dining I received an email asking why I hadn’t turned up for my reservation. Overall a great experience.
Our party of 4 enjoyed our lunch very much. From the friendly greeting when we arrived, the great service from all of the young wait staff and the yummy food that we enjoyed, it was a great experience - we look forward to a return visit!
Had been looking forward to, and was excited about going but overall was very disappointed!! The food was overpriced and no where near as tender as expected and portion sizes very small!! Even the vegetables were average- broccoli barely cook rather than crisp and eggplant tough too. Hand cut chips could have been McDonalds French fries!!! Probably wouldn’t even try again!!! $240 for 4( two of them small eating women!!!)with drinks( only one each) is over the top!!!
Fantastic all round!!!
Shame you didn’t have your sauces in stock when we came though as I would have definitely taken some home
The food was outstanding, beautiful little restaurant
Absolutely amazing food with such incredible flavour. Delicious wine, lovely staff.
Keep coming back here. Food and set up is great. Lovely to have a play area for the kids too so adults can enjoy meal in peace!
Fantastic place to share the plates and everything was spot on
The place was stunning but the amount of food for the price was shocking.
We spent $150 on food and it basically fed one person.
Meat that came put was 70% fat and no meat.
But regardless its a beautiful place just make sure you order triple the amount of food.
Where do I start......over priced food and drink, small portion size, dry brisket. Will not be return
We recommend for 2 adults to get 3 sides and 3 meats
Red Gum BBQ is our favourite American BBQ restaurant in Melbourne. We have gone to many BBQ places throughout Texas and Red Gum is the most authentic we have found. The venue and staff are great and the food comes quickly and is so tasty! Highly recommend.
