Ray’s and Stark Bar
We waited for 20 minutes for a waiter. We tried to get the attention of any waiter, to no avail and finally had to go find the manager, who took our order himself. When our food came there was no attempt at making amends. And this is NOT a cheap restaurant.
Warm summer night at Ray and Stark sounded lovely. We sat down at 7:30 pm (they close at 8). I had fond memories of a creative cocktail menu and innovative dishes (which is always fun given it’s at LACMA). However, our server was anxious for us to order and came by twice to tell us that the kitchen closes at 8. Needless to say, we had one drink and left for another restaurant. So sad.
The great museum and wonderful food. The best! Thank you.
The best food and service Wish it were closer to pasadena
Good service, good food, good atmosphere, excellent location
Food was great and the service was even better. Will definitely come back soon.
Outstanding service & food!
The food at Ray's is always original and delicious. Our service that night was extraordinarily good, and we loved hearing the Jazz performance. We do this at least once every summer and love the whole experience. We recommend Ray's to friends all the time.
House made lemonade was so refreshing. Coffees, chais, and cappuccinos were delicious. Seating in the shade on the patio with a wonderful view and room for the littles to have a corner of containment was a blessing for everyone. Each person enjoyed their meal and the specials were top of our list... good thing we got two breakfast pizzas!
A lovely evening with good food, great service and a wonderful jazz concert to boot!
Very good except the Americano tasted like Earl Grey tea and soap. Waiter disappeared until he gave us the check so I was unable to make an exchange.
It was great, however I set it up so a group of 8 could have a meeting-like social conversation, but the overall noise level was challenging, and when the perhaps unknown to the people making the reservation, there was a very loud music event just across "plaza" from the bar, which made it quite difficult to hear. We tried shutting the doors, which helped a bit.
This restaurant is about one, and only one thing - location, location, location. The bar part is attractive, the restaurant half less so with the outdoor section fine and the inside a no-no. Together, however, they are the only lunch/dinner option at or near LACMA. The food, from the first day Ray's and Stark opened, was less then stellar, boringly predictable, and pricey. For example, a recent lunch for an adult and child, consisting of a salad and chicken nuggets and fries, plus a lemonade and an ice tea ran ca $45. The service fluctuates from attentive and good to absent minded. In sum - its a great location that deserves better food.
The food was very good. The service was spotty, need more servers at rush time. The host desk needs to think a little more out of the box in terms of flexibility in seating - too milataristic and uninviting.
Went for jazz & music
I've been to Ray's many times. This was a bit of a disappointment. The food is still excellent. Very creative menu and delicious choices. This time the service was bad. I was seated by myself, but soon they sat a pair right next to me, though there were many open tables on the patio. One of the two was a loud mouth and soon I knew she was a loud stream of consciousness. I look forward to a quiet meal next time.
Wonderful except for the tremors!
Great place to get together with our son and five-year old granddaughter. The children's menu was a big hit, and dining on the patio was perfect.
Great cocktails and good food al fresco in the middle of LACMA’s energetic plaza. Score a table during Jazz Fridays for a chill evening.
Everything was wonderful, as usual.
Carmen was a very good, attentive server.
By far one of my best dinning places to go to . I absolutely love the Chicken Milanese. It's the only entree I get every time. Giovani, the server is always on top of it and just the best. The fresh squeeze grapefruit juice always makes my Greyhound delicious. I love the atmosphere and when the weather is beautiful, it makes the whole dining experience even better.
We love it and have gone post-LACMA for years interesting drinks too
The ambiance is the restaurant's strength. The service is fine. My companion and I had relatively inexpensive options for lunch, and the server, while polite, conveyed his disinterest in our dining experience. The food, however, is heavy (even the salads). The lightest option I, a vegetarian, could find was a 10" pizza; I left two thirds of it there.
But it's a nice space - open and airy.
The shrimp and avocado salad was awful. The shrimp smelled and was soft and kind of mushy. Sone of the lettuce was fresh but some was not. I ate the avocado and the croutons and covered the shrimp with lettuce. I didn't complain because I was with a group. Usually your food is delicious.
Super tasty food, super potent cocktails, super friendly staff.
This place is absolutely fabulous, and a great unique dining experience in the heart of Los Angeles. During the summer, on Friday nights there is a jazz hour going on and that is absolutely wonderful. The management team and the wait staff are five star here, and the food is really good.
Honestly I can’t say enough good things about the overall experience here, and again the management team in the hostess staff and all the waiters and waitresses are just super nice.
Made my 50th Birthday something special
The food is always excellent here. The service is great as well. They always make you feel so welcome. I had a remarkable shrimp and avocado salad...sounds very simple but it was delicious! It is so fun to have a fine meal and then an afternoon of art and culture. What a treat!
Dishes Well Plated and Delicious,Drinks Complemented Flavors, Service and Ambiance, Warm Friendly and Inviting
The best thing about Ray's and Stark Bar was Giovanni our server. He is energetic, fun and has a beautiful grasp of all the menu items including the wine list. The food was nice, but Giovanni was the best part of the experience. Also if you love jazz, definitely go there on a friday night so you can be right in the heart of the jazz concert. it's loud so bring your outdoor voice!! ;)
Thanks again, we will be back!
except for the unruly texting mother who was too preoccupied to attend to her screaming kid. And she was finally shamed out of the room. after which all was lovely
Another fabulous dinner at Ray’s as part of Friday night jazz. We always have the best service- thank you, Carmen and staff! And this trip we tried the new salmon entree; it was healthy, tasty and delicious... just need a spoon for lentils next time. And we always enjoy the cheese board and the rose, so we were very grateful to again have such a great food, wine and musical experience!
The staff were very nice, but appeared a bit scattered and overwhelmed.
The food was expensive and of very poor quality. We ordered the Pizza Margarita and Pizza Fungi. The outer crust was excellent. The rest, completely tasteless. My passion fruit iced tea was plain iced tea with lemon. Our server insisted that WAS their passion fruit and that they didn’t offer plain iced tea?
Fellow diners appeared to be equally depressed by the quality of their choices which were entirely different from ours.
The only reason we EVER go there is that it’s handy to the museum and well placed for jazz nights. Otherwise, I would never recommend it.
The attention decor is striking . We loved the table with the hidden drawers and the glasses were beautifully shaped. The food was delicious though the portion of salmon was small. Dessert was decadent! Our cocktail and wine were a lovely treat.
Outstanding salmon salad with a variety of flavors and textures, making every bite a burst in my mouth. Really loved it!
Great pizza and wine Service was outstanding. Jazz festival with great music just out side
I've been there probably 20 times, and each meal has been a great experience. The food is delicious, the menu creative, the service is perfect and the ambience wonderful. This time was Friday jazz night and we were serenaded by a talented jazz big band. Another great experience away Ray's and Stark Bar!
Wait staff, food, quality for price. Makes me remember every time I have the best meals here all
I ordered the Chitarra pasta with shrimp, crab, brown butter and preserved lemons. The chef forgot the crab, and the preserved lemons. When I requested them, they sent out a bit of cold crabmeat and some diced lemons. Obviously chef has not a clue what preserved lemons are, nor is he knowledgeable about beurre noisette. The dish did not taste bad, but it was definitely not as advertised. Chef certainly needs more training on how to execute dishes as described on the menu. Chef seems to be lacking basic culinary techniques and education.
Pasta was also served a bit stuck together, (not drained properly), and not hot. Service by Andrew was great, but he could not make up for the inadequacies of the food, even though he tried his best. There were not enough heaters to go around. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone who knows food. Also, paying $16.00 for parking was alot on top of the cost of the drinks and food. I feel that the restaurant should validate at least a large portion of the parking.
Jazz night - always fun!
