Big Boy cooks from memories of his grandmothers rolling the pasta in the kitchen. He remembers them cooking the best lunches for him when he was going to school.
I dearly miss my beautiful France and would like to share my two favourite regions, Beaujolais to The Rhone Valley where I grew up and the South West where my mother lives. I invest my time looking at the new generation focusing on smaller production, organic or biodynamic, respecting the terroir. I also spent my holidays in Italy with my uncle, the wines on the list are all the memories of my childhood.

It is great to have a high-quality restaurant like this on the Central Coast. While the choice is limited - a 5-course set menu - all the food is excellent and there is a lot to eat. The wine pairing is also interesting. The husband-and-wife owner / chef / front of house makes this a personal experience - and a very enjoyable one, too.

A gushing complimentary review in the Sydney Morning Herald in late June and a vegetarian degustation option for my wife persuaded us to give this a try for Sunday lunch.
The SMH review describes the interior of the restaurant as something akin to an Italian hunting lodge. We were seated on a small uncovered table in the front room which I would describe as more Australian country town milk bar than Italian hunting lodge and our disagreements with the SMH review don’t end there.
The SMH review goes into adoration overdrive in his description of the Moreton Bay Bug dish which I also had and far from the chef “turning it into something greater than it is”, I thought he did the exact opposite. I could barely taste the bug meat as it was covered in goo and various other bits and pieces.
The mystery snacks first course for me consisted of a very small slice of tasty ham on a tiny bun and some other forgettable “morsels”. The pasta dish was OK but nothing special and the wagyu main course was much the same but lacked flavour and was somewhat “chewy” and I preferred the scotch fillet steak that I did on the BBQ the previous weekend.
The standout dish was the chilled pumpkin desert and I don’t normally eat desert except when it comes as part of a set meal which was the case here.
My wife was also similarly disappointed with most of her dishes and whilst I know this review is at odds with most of the other reviews, it is my honest assessment of our meals. I have written over 200 restaurant reviews and most of them are positive. I guess this place just “isn’t us” but what really got my back up was the wine list. Ettalong is only just over one hour’s drive from the Hunter Valley – one of Australia’s oldest and finest wine producing areas. I could not see one Australian wine on the wine list – almost all from Italy. When I complained to one of the owners, she just said that that is the wine that they know. Helloooooooo…..the only wine they know is on the other side
Dear Geoffrey Ashlin, As the multiple reviews on multiple platforms came in other the weekend, we were slightly confused about an answer. We have been busy changing our menu and wines for this week for our lovely, educated customers and I really wanted to take time to reply. As you mentioned yourself as odds compare to other reviews you said it all.
Staff were friendly and fun, food was amazing, taste buds loved the flavours, did the degustation, with the paired wines, perfect.
Chef even took photos with us.
The meal was very unique and interesting and they cater to vegetarians

The quality of food is extremely good. The professional service is surprising given its small coastal location.
We have eaten there 3 times and enjoyed the set Italian menu from wonderful starters to crab and ink squid pasta. The desserts are also a stand out.
So happy to have this fabulous innovative restaurant near us.
Okay this is a must, whether you live or have to travel here. The whole menu with matching wines was great. I could not pick 1 fault. Definitely levelled up.

This was our first visit to Osteria il Coccia. Wow. We enjoyed a wonderful Sunday lunch degustation menu. Every course was delicious and service was friendly and attentive. I can’t really pick a favourite dish but the Moreton bay bug with parsnip purée and fish broth poured from a teapot was something special. We also appreciated the pace of service and the resting time between each course. We had mentioned that we were not in a hurry- as we wanted to appreciate the degustation at a leisurely pace - we felt that our hosts took that into account. Thank you. We will return.
The service and the food are amazing, we loved it. If you cant get to Italy this year or next this is the place to eat. Cannot speak too highly of a great meal with greet people
