If you are looking for an up-market classy restaurant with superb views of Constitution Dock and the River Derwent, this is the go-to place. The food is modern and imaginative, some dishes a little on the small side
for some people, but all are beautifully presented and the service is excellent. A show place for Hobart.
Not fine dining in our opinion, but a pleasant evening. Friendly but inexperienced service. No real explanation of the dishes. Somewhat clumsy food in places (such as too dry Flatbread under a salad starter). Kept needing to ask waitress to refill our wine when empty. And much too much of a rush to serve courses rather than letting you luxuriate over them.
We had a real fine dining experience for the same price the next evening in a nearby restaurant.
Definitely okay, and not too expensive, but could definitely be better with a bit more care. Especially with the "feed me" option.
A very pleasant place to have a meal. We were well looked after by friendly staff. The food was fresh and well presented. We can recommend the fish and tirimisu.
Service good. No complaints.
Really lovely experience. Staff were fantastic and helpful. Gluten free/vegetarian options were wonderful and particularly good that the menu was at the table ready rather than having to ask for it. It was my mum's birthday and my brother and family flew in from Melbourne - they were really appreciative of the experience and the outlook. Thanks
Just loved the setting, and particularly appreciated the story telling element - right down to the piece of history colourfully depicted on the back of the restroom door! The food was exceptional - a heavy accent on artisan produce and really delightfully served, with an eye for pretty detail, and mindful of a range of textures, which together made the dishes we ordered delectable. At last we are embracing our history and identity here in Hobart - we would feel proud to take anyone form anywhere here!
Food was delicious, fresh, creative and reasonably priced. Dessert the weakest point. Good wine, generous glass. Loved the bread and butter.
Service was friendly without being intrusive but a bit hit and miss with timing. Generic music not appealing to me but maybe others like it.
Great spot- will be back.
My Sydney visitors and I loved the exceptional fresh food, the excellent vegetarian food on the menu and the wonderful location and ambience. The service was also terrific.
I will visit again soon
We enjoyed our dinner at the Old Wharf Restaurant and the food was excellent. I had read negative reviews but could not fault the food and service. Our waitress Elena was very friendly and attentive nothing was too much trouble. We would definitely dine there again when we visit Tasmania.
From the moment we arrived, we were made welcome and the service was attentive, yet not intrusive.
We chose from the standard and vegan menu and the food was well presented and very delicious.
Our waiter, Daniel was great and the ambience, location and food were very special.
We would highly recommend the Old Wharf Restaurant to anyone and hope to be able to return on our next visit to Hobart.
Poor service and miscommunication from wait staff and the menu was not explained very well. Sat waiting for bill for a long time. Hair found in meal and had to be returned with no genuine apology or refund. Rest of food was nice but disappointing service especially because we were a party of 6 and spent quite a bit of money
Staff are friendly but not invasive. Professional approach to service
Food was simple but well Put together- largely fresh and shareable .
I was worried about the restaurant being between the two bars but it was actually fairly quiet despite being full that evening.
Lovely ambience and great service. A trainee waiter did an outstanding job as well.
We ordered 2 cocktails, the first one took 10 minutes to be made then sat on the bar for another 15 before it was brought to our table. The second one took a further 10 minutes to arrive.
We ordered starters which arrived promptly, finished our drinks and wanted to order mains and more drinks but couldn’t as no waiters came to our table for over 30 minutes. In the end we left and dined elsewhere.
Best grilled pumpkin dish I ever tasted, savory and sweet at the same time. Paired with tangy cauliflower and I had an amazing vegetarian meal. Can't wait to go back1
Excellent food, couldn't fault it. Service by Laura was exceptional. Would have liked a few more red wine options though. Overall was a enjoyable night would recommend.
Service from staff who were friendly and personable was very good! Food was fabulous, lots of local produce with a lot to choose from. The Chef's choice of six courses for you was the way to go!
The steak didn't seem to be eye-fillet, the vegetable tough and the fries too thin. For a top class restaurant the food should be beyond reproach. The ambiance was good and the service excellent ( an American young lady). Not inclined to book again.
There's some real creativity in the menu, but some old favourites, executed well, too. My calamari was overcooked on one side, and my wife's squid-ink pasta contained some overcooked chunks of prawn. The deserts need a bit of finesse, and they could be really quite good, rather than just okay. My major objection is the extravagant markup on the wine list. Everything I knew there was at least 250% of what you can buy it from a bottle shop, at least half as much again as I've bought it at other restaurants, and there wasn't an inexpensive option at all.
By far the worst service I have ever experienced in a restaurant. We waited to be seated even though we had a reservation, not because our table wasn't ready but because staff didn't seem interested in serving us. We were saeated without being asked for a drink. We had to call staff over to order our food and our drinks and literally were not topped up or served again until we asked for the bill. Staff were more than happy to clean tables around us, replace candles etc but acknowledging us as guest did not happen. We purchased a bottle of champagne but didn't get to drink more than the first glass as there was zero service. We attempted to speak to a manager but she had apparently gone home. A supervisor heard our complaint but nothing was done apart from being offered to take-away out bottle of champagne. This was a total joke. We paid the bill and walked out utterly disgusted. I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND THIS RESTAURANT TO ANYONE.
The service was excellent, but our meals were dissapointing & some of the seafood was very tough, & inedible. The salad consisted of cos lettuce, with a few slices of radish.
Great location and lovely atmosphere. Good selection from the grill and nothing disappointed. Service was excellent in patches. Waitress went missing couple times but didn’t spoil much
Great service. Wonderful food. Thanks to Irena for her assistance.
First time, visiting from interstate and dining with friends. Great advertisement for Tasmania and the Macq01.
Have been here a few times and each time the service is outstanding. The menu and drinks list changes quite regularly but there is always a great choice available. Great vegan/vegetarian choices also
Imaginative menu, relaxed service, friendly polite staff. Good for foodies.
We were beyond impressed with this restaurant & will definitely go back when in Tasmania.
Food was really lovely as was the decor and outlook of the restaurant- only downer was a large family table with many kids on it who were very very loud (one other table left as a result of the noise) staff didn't seem to know what to do about this issue. Otherwise it was a lovely meal
Fantastic service, so many delicious food choices, amazing location.
I have visited the Old Wharf restaurant twice during the past week. On the first occasion I felt the service a bit slow for our large table and on the second we were rushed. A DELIGHTFUL PLACE TO EAT but the service not as professional as was initially when opened.
Admired the setting and the restaurant’s manifesto of using fresh Tasmanian produce, but overall the dishes were disappointing. Octopus entree was very good but chicken breast main was poor. Chicken was cooked perfectly but the accompaniments were confused and clanging flavours as well as impossible to eat from a deep sided bowl with knife and fork! Not sure if it was meant to be a broth or what?
My partner ordered cauliflower entree which was good but the salmon entree was another poor dish. The menu does not state that it is cured and would not have been ordered if it had. Once again, flavours did not mesh and left a lingering bitter aftertaste.
Wait staff brought us pre-dinner drinks but just didn’t offer to take wine orders.
May try again in case was just an off night but so far would not recommend. Expected far more from a restaurant who’s head chef was former head chef at Sapphire.
Wonderful food 😊All of my guests and myself enjoyed the whole experience. Quick efficient service, great views and creative dishes. I certainly would recommend this restaurant to any of my friends or family. My husband and I will be back again soon. Thank you for a great experience.
This is the second time we have eaten here and the food has been very good both times. My starter didn't turn up and I had to go in search of waiting staff to inquire - waving frantically from the table didn't work. Turned out it had been assumed to be my main course. A basic error on the part of the kitchen and not much observation on the part of the waiter. But it didn't spoil the evening. There is a curious fetish here of explaining the menu as if it was likely to be unfamiliar when it is pretty much a standard set up of starters, entrees and mains and a strange obsession with asking if you want to share plates. This just makes the service fussy and vaguely weird. There seemed (on the evidence of the dishes we chose) to be little difference in portion size between the entrees and the mains. I don't know if this matters or not but it's an oddity. Wine is taken from the table and then managed by the waiting staff. No problem with that but I'm not sure this restaurant is quite up to it- either more staff or more attentive staff are needed to pull it off. normally this problem is caused by too few staff and too much engagement in restaurant matters which are not customer facing: quite literally, at one point all 3 visible members of staff were standing with their backs to the restaurant engaging in some kind of admin. Which also suggests a firmer management hand is required to run the room. Finally there was live music of pretty ordinary quality (actually it sounded dreadful) being played somewhere - I'd suggest better separation of the restaurant (not easy given the design) from the source of the noise. Having said all that we will certainly eat here again and can recommend it. The food is good, the service pleasant albeit visibly stretched and lacking detail (as this restaurant is creeping up towards the expensive side this will eventually become a problem) and the cooking is very sound.
Good location, great views. Food was excellent, but on the expensive side. Wines start at $65/bottle. Our waitress was terrific! Overall, it was a good evening out.
Outstanding service, food was inexpensive and tasty.
Amazing service and the interoir was absolutely beautiful and perfect for a date with someone special. Definitely will be going back
This restaurant was cold, cold, cold. What is it with not providing a heated room in Hobart in the evening? The lady waiting was quite nice but too chatty. I dine on my own quite a lot, I don't need to be talked to every 10 mins or asked how my meal is over and over. The ambience of the restaurant was further reduced as the kitchen staff were over sharing with each other all night, please shut up. The diners do not want to hear about your private life or listen to you complaining about your job. The meal I (didn't) have was served on a cold plate, the potatoes were raw, the fish was inedible and tasteless, the spring onions were not trimmed, and the sauce was so watery there was no traction with the protein. I had to send it back. Thank God for bread and butter.
very disappointed in the food , the flavours not too our liking , certainly wouldn't recommend it , plus we when we looked at the account on Sunday morning to find we were over charged
Walking through Maq1 felt touristy with its cabinets of display items. The lounge and story room looked great. We went to the restaurant, the food was good but not outstanding - it’s the sort of stuff I make myself - ottolenghi style food. Some was delicious but some was a bit bland. It all looked great and was generous. Service was fab and friendly. Price was $120 for two incl a glass of wine each and too much food!
we went for the set menu, enjoyed all the courses but would have like a sweet to finish
