Nobu started as a business partnership in 1994 between chef Nobu Matsuhisa, his partners actor Robert De Niro, producer Meir Teper and managing partner Richie Notar. With the original restaurant in New York, the Nobu brand is now currently established in many locations around the world including London, Tokyo, Las Vegas, Milan, Hong Kong and Waikiki.
Nobu restaurants continue with unprecedented praise and rave reviews from such notable publications as the New York Times, the Zagat Surveys, and the Michelin Guide. The restaurants’ perennial popularity and devoted following are a tribute to Nobu putting his own personal spin on traditional Japanese cooking.
We dined at Nobu for a special occasion, foolishly expecting a similar quality and exceptional dining experience of that when we dined at Itoh Dining in Kyoto. It wasn’t a special dining room feel, we had the signature menu expecting to be surprised and delighted... and we weren’t!
Remembering the moments gave way to “yes but our local modern Japanese in our country town has given us better mouth moments”, which was pretty sad! We enjoyed our night celebrating but decided we wouldn’t return!
Nobu Perth is my most frequented restaurant & Melbourne Nobu was not even on the same level.
Food was average. Seafood was not fresh. Biggest disappointment was the Abalone. Paid $60 for a dish that was mostly mushrooms & when you finally found an abalone it was overcooked tough & unenjoyable. Lacked any flavour - I ended up soaking in soy sauce.
The atmosphere not great, like being in a basement with other tables on top of each other. To end, bill was just thrown on the table.
Have been coming 1-2 times a year since Nobu opened in Melbourne.
The decor, furniture, bathrooms are all outdated, time to refresh. Nobu is no longer unique in its food and beverage offering, competition is on-par to better than what Nobu offers. The menu is also old. I know you keep the best selling and customer faves.
Just as I remembered it to be from 2010.
Love the energy in the restaurant and yet you can have an intimate dinner without much distractions.
Food is as good as I remember, just get the regular Nobu Omakase set is just enough to keep you satisfied. Pair with either their amazing selection of sake or white wine, both of which I feel goes better with Japanese food.
Food quality was excellent
But as a quiet dinner definitely not the place to go
More like busy Bourke Street ambience
Tables are too close to one another such that you could hear he conversation on the next table
We thoroughly enjoyed our Nobu experience. Food was exceptional, as was the service and knowledge of the food.
Amazing food every time!
Great food and service
Fantastic evening. Couldn't fault food or service.
Great atmosphere and service, food is ok but definitely not worth the price, portion sizes are a joke for the beef tacos
We ordered 2 beef tenderloin steak and the lamb cutlets which were absolutely unedable.
The lamb was full of fat and so dry . The meat smelt and the steak was dry and tough.
Never again. 44$ steak and it was horrible.
Thank you for the special birthday surprise! It was a lovely touch :)
Staff friendly and efficient
Probably wouldn’t go back. Sashimi very good and nice view as seated upstairs. However, significant delays between meals despite being quiet and drinks took around 30 minutes to receive (even non alcoholic ones). Had the black cod miso which was full of bones which was very disappointing given Japanese restaurants pride themselves on expert preparation and technique. Desserts beautifully presented but underwhelming flavours. Service staff were quite friendly, made good recommendations
The food was very good, the service was friendly if not a little too friendly, however being seated next to three younger diners who managed to make every second word an expletive (and I’m not exaggerating) this quite ruined our night. The atmosphere was noisy and pub-like so myself and my wife did not enjoy the night as we had expected. Will not go again as can get the same quality of food for marginally cheaper but with much better ambience elsewhere.
Wonderful, as always. Have dined in other Nobu locations, Monte-Carlo and Melbourne are my favourites. Great food, impressive wine list, amazing service...I always visit when I’m visiting Melbourne.
Amazing food, amazing service and it’s a beautiful restaurant. The waiters were attentive and cater to all needs. The food was unforgettable and we thoroughly enjoyed everything we ordered.
Nobu always impresses with the high standard in food and service. Straight away you are greeted and all of your requirements are met by the knowledgeable staff who have extensive understanding of the menu and drinks lists.
Very accommodating for our dietary requirements.
Lovely food, excellent service!
Highly recommend all the sashimi, especially the Yellow Tail and the Tuna... YUM! All the seafood was fresh and amazing.
On the higher end cost wise, but lovely for a special occasion.
Loved the food although quite expensive but the service was wonderful. Very loud but would definitely recommend
Food was great, and service was even better. Had the omakase and the tuna tetaki was the highlight. We had a 50 minute wait in between one dish however was more than made up for by the exceptional service and food.
Nobu is a very good Japanese Restaurant with good food, wine, service and atmosphere.
Great food !
Would not recommend, we came for our anniversary night and I could barely hear what he was saying from across the table due to the noise level.
The food was average, very different but I would not come back again
Food and cocktails were awesome...perfect.
Unfortunately the music was awful and so loud we couldn't communicate. Asked to be moved to a quieter table but told the noise level is loud everywhere.
Unfortunately, this is a deal breaker for us and will not return. Pity, coz we luved the food.
Very good food and excellent service
Our favourite place!
Our favourite family lunch hangout and the bento box lunch is always a must have
Beautiful restaurant with excellent waiting staff and brilliant food
Staff were very attentive and provided great recommendations when it came to food and drinks.
The minute we walked through the door we were made to feel welcome and the staff were so knowledgeable.
Thank you Nobu for a great introductory experience to Japanese cuisine. We wil definitely be back. Thank you for a grea night out
Very noisy, loud music, not the place to go if you after romantic evening or even a place to catch up with friends, everyone was trying to talk over the music made it very difficult for conversation. Food was ok, service was outstanding.
Great place to celebrate a birthday. Staff were attentive and catered to different dietary requirements.
Not as good as my first visit. Good that they changed the menu but not a very good mix. Too many spicy elements in the bento, taste more like Korean than Japanese. Not authentic enough. Understand that they are more like a fusion type. But Nobu is famous for bringing the best of Japanese. Good to feature the fresh & light side of Japanese.
Was very impressive with the dessert in my first visit. This time also a bit disappointed. The chocolate donut ball not very tasty.
A little noisy but overall a great experience
We were really disappointed with the experience. It was my partners Birthday and the environment wasn’t as nice as I was expecting. The staff didn’t seem very well trained, we have about 8 different staff serve us, we were sat downstairs by the wall and the environment felt like a cheap pub. It was loud, the table was sticky and the crockery looked very old and battered. The fish was nice but a few of the other dishes were underwhelming. I wouldn’t go back or recommend the experience to anyone.
If you want to experience a modern Japanese cuisine, Nobu is the best place to go in Melbourne.
Please try their Japanese bento boxes for lunch at the first time, you will be a repeater of this restaurant.
Excellent value ,great service delicious food
We have dined at Nobu a number of times but this time was not enjoyable first even though we booked well in advance the only time was 8.45 pm, firstly the music was extremely loud and unfortunately a table of people arrived and had absolutely no respect for other diners yelling, swearing etc
It was very embarrassing for us and our overseas friends celebrating a birthday , no one ask them to quieted down and we asked staff to find a table so we could enjoy our sweets and coffee ! Disappointing
