Nieuw Amsterdam has a lot of plates in the air, but they’re not dropping one. Come early for dinner. Stay late for disco. Anytime is the right time.

For starters you’d never know the beautiful split-level venue was recently sticky Irish boozer Pugg Mahones. They got the Jameson and sweat smell out, but they’ve kept the bones, adding a smooth marble bar to the backdrop of brick arches, dark buffed wood and the outline of a New York City skyline upstairs. Downstairs it’s a dim-lit stand-alone bar which joins Boney, Le Bon Ton, and Loch and Key in doing a dawn service.

That’s the great thing here, you get just as good an experience upstairs or down, and at either end of the day. In charge is Michael Roszbach, ten-year veteran of Thai restaurant-cum-cocktail bar Cookie, and all that experience shows itself here in the winning trifecta of great service, good booze and solid food.

A bit disappointed about the place. Both my boyfriend and I called twice to say that most of the people attending would require a vegetarian meal and they said it would be fine as they could change the menu for more vegetarian options. We showed up and they only had a few and didn't offer to change the menu at all and we were not able to order things from the bar either (which is downstairs). Also the waiter made a mistake and brought two mains for us even though we said we were sharing and told us to "be more specific next time" in a rude manner. I work in customer service so I'm pretty nice with waiters and never rude to them but he was not nice at all.

Our dinner and wine at this lovely restaurant was superb. We enjoyed the white wine selection and our choice of starters and mains was spot on. Service was excellent and decor classy and tasteful. All in all it was a wonderful dining experience and we will definitely return.

Beautiful food. Had the cheese croquettes, beef ribs and chicken mains, sides of chips and slaw, cheesecake for dessert. My friend visiting from Tassie was very impressed with the meal and great service. Music was rather loud from the floor downstairs but dining sitting is certainly comfortable.

I booked for a table for 2 but because I saw couple of tables open I asked if we can move to a table of 4. I can understand if it was booked or busy, but if not it would be nice if they can be a bit flexible.

Interesting selection of food items, the food we ordered was fantastic and at a reasonable price. Nice place, friendly staff, good vibe - I recommend the joint.

the most amazing cocktails - recommend the tobaccquiri (with cigar foam). And delicious menu to accompany it for sharing (or not)... We were there on a quiet mid-week and although we were the last to leave we were never made to feel unwelcome. Would def go again.
