Nico Kitchen & Bar - Newark
James Hampson, our General Manager believes in complete guest satisfaction and providing the best in service and hospitality.
A value- priced, three- course , more traditional Prix Fixe menu, priced at $44 pp, and two course (first and second courses) for $40 pp, is exclusively offered on Symphony/Speaker Series nights. A flexible priced three course Performance Menu is offered for performances featuring Legacy Artists, Comedy Shows etc.
A good spot for a pre- performance meal if you are going to the Prudential Center, otherwise I would not make a special trip to dine here.
My 3-star review is directly linked to the chef/cook in the kitchen. My fried catfish had to be returned not once but twice due to it being severely under cooked. The wait staff were totally apologetic and the manager came over and personally comped my meal because of it. Eventually, when I did get the catfish on the third try, it was done right and it was delicious. Every other aspect of my experience was very pleasurable and I do recommend giving this restaurant a try.
Great service. The entress were not as tasty as the last time we ate there. Appetizers were good - brussel sprouts were very tasty. Drinks were well made - wine list (by the glass) seemed limited
Food was average at best. Service was slow and awkward. You pay for the convenience of the location inside NJPAC. I would not go again except for drinks maybe.
They really got the whole “pre-concert” dining down. The service was quick but not rushed, the food was quite good. They gave us complimentary Brussels sprouts which were so amazingly good, I would order them as an entree, just the best Brussels sprouts I’ve ever had. The portions are a good size, so you’re not stuffed, but you sure don’t leave hungry. Just an overall very pleasant experience!!
We left plenty of time for pre-show dinner. A three course set menu. Food was late and we didn’t even have time for dessert. Good location but poor option.
Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. I apologize the food was late to the point that you did not receive dessert. Please be assured, we are taking measures to ensure this is not an issue in the future. James Hampson General Manager
We had a reservation for seven and had a nice table by the windows. The restaurant was nowhere near full as there were several empty tables. Our server was on point taking our orders quickly and ensuring that our drinks were topped off immediately. When our other five guests arrived, she was able to take our orders without issue as well. But, then the issues began. She had to inform us that they had run out of salmon, and then they ran out of bread. Our food finally arrived, but, though we arrived early and the remainder of party arrived on time, by the time it was served, we had less than 25 minutes to eat it, then pay. It was all very tasty despite the delay. When the bill arrived, though most in our party had cash, two used credit cards. When their bill arrived, there was an extra 20% tacked on the already mandatory 20% having been added to the original total! What was that about? Then, we had to rush into the show, which had already begun. Overall, we will be back as we have another show next week, but we hope that there is enough food for all and that we can be served in time to see the entire show and not miss the beginning. And, next week, we'll be a party of two.
My apologies for the issues you encountered during your meal. We are currently making changes to ensure smoother execution for you next visit, and thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback. James Hampson General Manager
Decent food for a decent price convenient to NJPAC. The entrees range from excellent to okay e.g. catfish is excellent! Short ribs are dry. Vegetables can be awful e.g. edamame. They ensure you make the show which is better than other restaurants in the area. I almost always eat there before nighttime shows.
The service was less than poor. Restaurant was just about empty when we arrived. Our waitress did not know what she was doing. It took her 20 minutes just to take our order. 35 minutes to receive a glass of wine. The whole experience was terrible. Management did not offer any compensation. At the very least, they should have paid for the glass of wine.
Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback and I apologize for the poor service. We are working on the issues that you encountered and would love the opportunity to make amends on your next visit. James Hampson General Manager
I dined at Nico before a matinee showing of Harry Potter. Seated immediately, three wait staff asked what we would like to drink, food order taken immediately. Wait staff impeccably dressed and mannered. Ordered a Sangria that was not to my taste and it was replaced immediately. It did not arrive until we were ready to leave and so we were given to go cups. The replacement sangria was ok at best - but we decided not to make an issue of it. Our one complaint is that we actually heard the Manager state to our waiter that "no- we're not comping [the sangria] it!" We did not ask for a comp and the manager should have been more discreet when relaying such a thing to his staff. We found it to be extremely unprofessional and it brought down the quality of the dining experience for us. Cannot say enough about the wait staff though. Even so, we will not be returning to this restaurant.
I always enjoy dining at Nico. It's a great spot for a meeting over lunch or dinner after work with friends & colleagues.
It was our first time here and the service was wonderful very friendly staff and food was great
What a nice experience. The restaurant and then the njpac show. Everyone was so friendly. We had a great time and are now sold. Great job.
Food tasted & looked like it was prepared in advance before you ordered it.
Ate here before a show at NJPAC everything was great - no complaints!
We really liked our dinner before going to see Jo Koy. This was the first time, our waitress was professional and so were the other staff. My favorite was the filet and creme brulee. I am going to come back.
Delightful lunch with my colleagues. Food and service really were spot on.
We chose this restaurant for its proximity to NJPAC and its menu, and were looking forward to a romantic meal prior to the performance we were attending that Tuesday evening. Instead, we had the worst dining experience we've ever encountered. There were bread plates on the table but no bread was served, even after asking one of our servers. We both ordered the soup of the day, described as a butternut squash and maple soup with croutons. After waiting 30 minutes for our soup course, another server visited our table and asked if we had received our soup yet, to which we replied "no". He said it would be right out. Another 10 minutes passed and then we were served soup without croutons. When asked about the croutons, our original server explained they had run out. I then asked for bread or crackers to go with our soup. Nothing was brought to the table. As we started to eat our soup, we both agreed it tasted like tomato soup so we called our waitress over. She apologized, saying the butternut soup was yesterdays special and she was mistaken. She offered to take it off the check. At this point our wine glasses were empty and we were anxious to leave. Instead we waited for our second course, and for someone to remove the half-eaten soup. Another 15 minutes elapsed, and my beet salad (5 beets, the rest frisée and unremarkable) and my husband's margherita pizza (ho hum) was deposited in front of us. Empty bread plates still on the table. Quite honestly, NJPAC should be embarrassed and do everything within their power to remove the current restaurant owner. For such a beautiful dining room, so close to a beautiful venue, the place should've been packed, both before and after the show. Instead it was empty, and deservedly so. Sincerely disappointed. Thank goodness our show was spectacular! It saved our night out.
Gave me Tomatoe soup that really was Pizza sauce! Took about 40 mins to get the meal. They provided bread at the end of the meal. Try eating elsewhere rather than in NJPAC.
Very poor service. We watched our drinks sit on the bar waiting for a server to bring to our table for several minutes. The place was only half full, so it’s not like they should be overstretched. We ordered three items to be served simultaneously. But one item didn’t come til long after we finished the other two. The bar doesn’t serve a hard cider in Newark where cider has a history going back to George Washington. This place deserves a management overhaul.
Arrived on time for a 6:15PM reservation for an 8PM performance. Salad arrived at 6:45PM. 30 minutes to put some greens on a plate with a side of dressing! WHY SO LONG? Entrée arrived at 7:20 PM! AGAIN, WHY SO LONG? Dessert arrived a few minutes before we had to leave so that we weren't late for the 8PM performance! WHY? We told our server that we had an 8PM show to make when we sat down at 6:15PM. I figured 1 hour 15 to 1.5 hours tops for our meal which I'm sure was reasonable. We had to leave before finishing our meal! NEVER AGAIN, THANK YOU!
Our only complaint is that the service was slow and we had to rush through dessert to get to the performance on time
What a disappointment. We have gone several times before and it's been a good experience.
First they didn't have enough 2 tops for the number of reservations and seem confused on what to do. We got one but wish we hadn't.
The servers were friendly but abcent. We ordered quickly. Got bread and sales working a few minutes. Then it was over an hour before our food came. The servers avoided the tables that were waiting and only came over if you got them. The explanation was the kitchen is backed up. Based on how many people were not getting food that was painfully obvious.
When we got our food my shifts in and pasta were both cold...but we didn't have enough time for a retire. The manager took 10% off the bill but honestly we shouldn't have had to pay for this dish.
Paying for the meal also took forever. It was unpleasant experience and set a bad time for the show.
On the plus side all patrons were in the same boat so we la.ented about it together.
This is a theater resturant and this is all they do. Kind of sad.
Food cold portions small price high. The waiter was good
We have been here before and the food is excellent. There seemed to be a problem with the kitchen-it took a very long time to get our food, but our server Carl couldn't have been more gracious. He was so polite and friendly! The manager came over to apologize -maybe it was just an off night.
Our server, Apani (sp?) was exceptional and should be cloned. As always, the food was excellent.
This is more an Open Table issue- I had a reservation for 8:30 and we got there at 8 and they said the kitchen was closing in a few minutes and had to order right away. Don't know why Open Table even let me make a reservation at 8:30?
Service and food was great though. Our waiter was super attentive.
We ate before the show. This was our first time and we were not disappointed. We had mixed feelings but thought it was great value.
Reservation was for 1:45 and we arrived on time.
Show time was 3pm.
Waitress asked if we were going to a show so she knew we were attending a performance.
Main course did not arrive until 2:40pm.
We had to eat very quickly -- I think gobble would be an appropriate term to use in order to make the 3pm.
My guest's salmon was cold
I am an advocate member of NJPAC and due to being rushed forgot to present my card for the 15% discount.
As an advocate member I have eaten at Nico's kitchen many times, this was by far the worst experience.
The other experiences were quite good.
Had a very nice Lunch before the Arlo Guthrie show. Our server Sima was a delight. She was very helpful with ordering as well as her service level was excellent. Food was on point as well. Sima also made us feel good just by her happy upbeat personality.
Another excellent meal. Third time, it is now our go to place.
Enjoyable lunch at Nico. The scallops pasta and salmon bowl was delicious. Service was prompt.
Our dinner at Nico was delicious. Waiter and bartender are friendly and professional. They forgot a side sauce but brought it promptly with apologies.
I had such a great time. It was the perfect combination of great food, great drinks, and great company!
The service was exceptionally good!!!! outstanding is a better word. we were delighted that we came.
Nico is the on-site restaurant at NJPAC. They offered a pre-fix menu for the evening we were there. We intentionally ordered items that would be easy prep, but were disappointed at every stage. It literally took 30 minutes for the first course, soup! And they only brought it out after I got up from the table and walked over to a manager to inquire. That’s how inattentive the service was. The soup was tasty; the entrees disappointing and dessert just so-so. Wine list is short, uninteresting and overpriced. Ambiance is warm although slightly loud. It’s convenient- only steps away from the show- but not a well-managed restaurant.
Service was very slow - had to wait 24 minutes for starters of soup and salad - and the food no better than OK. Very overpriced for what it offers. Noisy. Been there, done that, never again.
So convenient when attending event at NJPAC.
Liked the "shareables" addition.
Service was rather erratic and less efficient than usual.
Everything was great until time for dessert. Through no fault of our server, it took forever to get our simple dessert order. In spite of this we were pleasantly surprised and would eat here again.
Choose Nico on a performance night at NJPAC. 3 course prix fixe so not all menu items available but still a good selection. Chicken entree a bit dry but salmon cooked exactly as ordered and pleased with dish. Our server was very attentive and there was plenty of staff to keep water glasses filled and food coming to tables without feeling rushed. Finished with plenty of time to be seated for the show. Would try again on a night with complete menu. Also an attractive bar that looks worth a visit.
