My wife and I celebrated her birthday at New Normal last week. Prior to dinner we had a cocktail up on the rooftop bar, which is a lovely space.
Once we were seated for dinner the only real issue became apparent and that is the noise level. With the seats at a long table and music playing in the background it was very noisy and hard to hear each other.
The food was excellent. We tried quite a range of dishes: Octopus, tomato salad, beetroot salad, oven roasted potatoes, and fish. All were delicious. Then we tried both of the desserts - one with a caramelised whey sorbet which also had geraldton wax and little pops of meringue. Refreshing and delicious. The geraldton wax is a truly weird ingredient but it has a very floral taste. The other dessert had chocolate and lilly pillies. Also delicious.
Other than the noise level, I will definitely be back. Clever cooking. Nothing too pretentious. Local ingredients, cooked well. You also get a great view of the kitchen in action.
Excellent and varied food. The service was friendly and attentive- my only complaint was it was a bit noisy - will definitely go back though.
Great ambience and service very attentive and food timing excellent
We had a really disappointing evening at New Normal, and we won't recommend it or go back. A few highlights (or lowlights...)
We got there early, knowing our table would not be ready but were happy to have a drink upstairs at the bar. They said they would come and get us when our table was ready. After an hour & a quarter (and 20 minutes after our table booking) we decided no one was coming so we went downstairs to see at least 5 empty tables. We queried why they hadn't come to get us and they said "because we are really busy". They then went and set a place for us as the middle couple between 2 empty ends of a communal table. We asked why we couldn't have one of the 3 or 4 empty non-communal tables and were told they were for people who had booked them.
The acoustics are appalling and we had to shout at each other across the (communal) table. Not a great result when it is date night.
The waitress recited a rehearsed script and was arrogant in her delivery.
The food (which comes out "when it's ready") was average. I get the philosophy but it's annoying to have a plate of garlic roast potatoes sitting there while you wait for your lamb.
Speaking of the lamb, it was fatty and undercooked.
Overall, a very, very average experience. There are so many good restaurants in Perth, so luckily we don't need to go back to this one.
Everything was Outstanding.
Service was perfect
Fantastic evening at the chef's table! Delicious and creative menu.
The duck and the courgette dishes were amazing.
The lamb was good but would have been better if it had of still be hot.
The cocktails were very average.
The service was personal and not intrusive.
All in all, we would happily come back however would pass on the cocktails unless they were improved.
Meal consisted of the Bread and Olives, Courgette, Pink snapper special, Mullaway, Duck, Lamb and Potatoes. W/ Gin cocktail, rum cocktail, Flowstone and Domain naturaliste reds.
The staff was very friendly helped select our wine and advised how many plates to share. Food was fabulous I will be coming back.
Excellent food. Nice to have local produce and an ever-changing menu. Nice atmosphere in this cozy restaurant. Perfect for a weekend meal with a few friends.
Our first time at new normal and we loved it. Great service, great food - the fish was amazing, and a nice venue. We will be back.
Fabulous in every sense! An amazing restaurant with creative food that tastes incredible. Service was excellent.
Great place to go for some creative local food and wine. Service is helpful and friendly
The service was impeccable. Our waiter was attentive but not intrusive. Very supportive in helping us choose from the menu and match with wines. Nothing was too much trouble. Thank you!
Really good restaurant with a cool rooftop bar, making some tasty cocktails. The ingredients for the food and all wines and drinks are locally sourced, making, which is great. The food is very presented with the menu designed for sharing. We had pretty much everything on the menu and it all tasted fantastic. Good service as well, with a smart casual, friendly atmosphere.
Just a fantastic evening from start to finish. From the friendly reception to the service through the meal, it exceeded all my expectations. Although the menu is brief it have an excellent selection. The roof top bar is worth a visit before or after dinner. One of my favorite places to eat in Perth.
Great atmosphere and a very stylish bar. Great for a date or a night out with mates.
Brought my girlfriend for birthday dinner. Service turns out really well, food is excellent , ambience perfect. Overall is fantastic, couldn't ask for a better place
Delicious, interesting and well cooked food (small plate sharing) with friendly efficient service. A little on the noisy side and our banquette was a bit too straight backed to be comfortable but still a great night. Have been back several times and will return again.
Amazingly different cousins. Portions look small, but each bite is memorable. We ordered 5 dishes for 3 of us and that was more than enough.
To say that it was hard to get served to start is an understatement. It was 15 minutes between when we were seated and told a server would be with us in a moment to when one actually arrived. When we asked for a drinks menu we were asked what we felt like - to be honest I never know what I feel like until I look at he drinks menu. As their menus, wine, beer and cocktails were on three separate boards - so there was a hesitation in getting these to us. Ten minutes later they still weren't with us - so we called someone over and finally got them. At this point to be honest we were ready to leave. In saying that, from here service dramatically improved and the food made up for it all - to say it was divine delicious is an understatement. Would I go back - I think I would.
Great dinner at New Normal! We have been wanting to try this place for awhile now, and they did not disappoint! The service was great; our waitress really knew her job & had knowledge about the produce, which was so good! Our food was amazing, we noted that everything was seasoned just perfectly. Thanks for a lovely meal, will definitely be back.
Every mouthful was delicious but the duck sublime.
Staff skilled and lovely
Great service. decor has had a lot of thought put into it. communal tables. food is fantastic.
Best meal I've had in Perth for a long time with warm, elegant service. Everything on the menu chosen for seasonality, so the flavours were bang on.
New Normal is my favourite restaurant. The food is of a consistently high standard, with flavours and design complimenting each dish.
Do yourself a favour and get there a little earlier than your booking time so that you can enjoy the rooftop bar!
Rushed and pricey. Staff are friendly but not professional. Encouraged to order more than required. Servings are small.
Busy vibrant restaurant with a great rooftop bar serving special house cocktails! Staff were knowledgeable with the menu, open kitchen is a plus for me! Even though it’s a busy restaurant with some long tables we didn’t have any problem talking while sharing. Can’t wait to go back even if it’s just for a drink! Thanks New Normal for adding great food and ambiance to Subiaco.
Staff very friendly right from the start. Water arrived fast but cocktails a little slower to arrive.
Food was delicious and selections too tempting. Octopus so tender and juicy, I am dreaming about it. Great night out!
Great service with a relaxed dinning style and fantastic local seasonal produce
Excellent personalised service by the manager. Best service I have received in years.
Smart service and tasty food. The perfect combination for a special evening. The set up is perfect for a group of people who like to try new things and get surprised by the quality and freshness of the dishes. Sharing the plates was fun.
The attention to details in the whole set up from the toilet paper to the beautiful plates and real linen and more makes it a wonderful venue. Thank you for your service.
Great food, service, location and atmosphere. Knowledgeable staff who talked about each dish and each drink and made suggestions and made the meal interesting and fun.
Fantastic food but oh so noisy!! Great roof top bar for pre/ post dinner drinkss....easier to chat up there cos once you move downstairs to shared table dining its hard d to be heard. However def worth a try ....
Food was lovely, but extremely expensive for what you got. Quite small servings, big prices
It's important to focus on the good bits: Enjoyed the place and the company of my wife! Waitress was fantastic and helpful and friendly. Food and drink delicious. Ambience very good. Enjoyed people-, kitchen- and dish-watching! Will visit the upstairs bar next time and try the snacks.
A couple of minor things: I was surprised at the noise in the three-quarters full restaurant when we arrived, but I am middle-aged and the hearing is playing up these days! Knew I was going to have trouble picking out my wife's voice opposite me from out table in the middle of the room, but the maitre D kindly moved us to a high table against the wall. Much better. I commented to our waitress how cold the aircon was and she checked that it was set to the regulation 24.5 C. It wasn't (the kitchen sometimes lowers it) but once it came back to 24.5 it was perfect. The maitre D didn't ask us how our meal/experience/evening was when we paid our bill, which I feel is important to ask and if i was him or the owner/manager then I'd want feedback from every diner and guest there. Also the parking was a bit of a drag, next time we might take the train.
Lovely food, but quite expensive for the portions served and the service was great. We were three people and shared a long table with others. It was a noisy place and the people next to us were very loud. We found it difficult to have a conversation.
Interesting menu. The entrees are microscoping, particularly the King fish dish. We could not understand initially whether this was an order or a tiny appetiser offers by the restaurant. And the 4 or five were nothing to write about, except the octopus which was really good although again with the mentioned small size. The main courses were more substantial and the ribeye for two was very good size and superbly cooked. Why the recommended entree came with 4 small slices of toasted bread for four people, leaving significant part of the dish without the necessary breadvwas not clear! Noise - unbearable but going after nine will reduce the exposure. Desert was average. There is a tendency of a midfield return towards “Nouvelle cuisine” in terms of sizes and some pretentiousness. Service, just acceptable but enough. Wines - small list but good choices. Value for money? Good and more than worth it if one considers the main courses and the wines. In total - not really. Not because of cost but because of size, quality and showiness. (Regarding these, it would be good if the chef/s and management read the great Kauffman from the Ritz of London, who I immediately remembered when the first dishes arrived.) Would I recommend it? Yes, with the points mentioned in mind. Would we go again? The consensus was, likely (also conveniently located for us) but ordering only a main course, going after 8:30 and avoiding the noise or at other times going either alone or with people one expects no words exchanged.
A friend and I visited New Normal for Friday lunch - here's the verdict:
1. Service: Impeccable service from attentive, respectful, warm wait staff. Competitors take note - this establishment understands that a restaurant's human capital leaves a lingering taste in diners' mouths long after the physical cuisine is consumed. Fortunately, this was a very pleasant taste. I would return to this establishment simply because of the excellent service. I often hear people lament that Perth is devoid of decent service; perhaps New Normal's life work is to correct this...
2. Wine: The wine list, albeit briefer than competitors in the Western Suburbs, City and Highgate/ Mount Lawley precincts, is well rounded, accommodates all palates and fits the Western Australian inspired menu well. I enjoyed a glass of the Rose; fitted the dishes we ordered and diabolically warm day we were suffering through superbly.
3. Food: The food itself is well constructed, balanced and thoughtful, utilising local produce (I believe their focus at the time was Shark Bay?) and brings a freshness (minus the precociousness and usual chef 'egos' that is invisibly smeared across the dishes) that is so needed in offerings in the Western Suburbs and City precincts; If you are hungry, my recommendation is to definitely order more than you believe you will need as the portions are on the smaller side. What they lack in size (simply in comparison to their competitors), they definitely compensate for in flavour and creativity. The old adage rings true: quality, not quantity. This noted, neither my friend nor myself left feeling hungry.
4. Ambience: They have created such a feeling of openness, a gentrified space that gives a subtle nod to its gritty bones, with an open kitchen for inquisitive eyes. Note: it is communal seating. In a casual dining space, this isn't an issue for the majority of people I imagine.
New Normal is worthy of your time. Let's hope it sets the 'New Normal' for Perth.
We had a great night out with delicious food and excellent service
Hip Rooftop Bar, creative drinks local wines, beers & service with a smile, fun. Modern, rustic decor, open kitchen, Delicious locally sourced menu - refined. Satisfying service with a smile.
