New Chapter Ratings and Reviews
I ate here with my fiancee during a holiday in Edinburgh to celebrate her birthday. The staff were fantastic, we felt comfortable instantly. I had given the restaurant late notice that my fiancee is lactose intolerant, however, they still had some fantastic dairy free options for her and the meals were fantastic. Would definitely return.
Tucked away in a quiet side street this restaurant was a real find. Modern and bright and exceedingly welcoming, a great place for lunch. I am sure it is just as good in the evening. The food was interesting, well presented and just innovative enough to be excitingly fresh. Service was superb, almost too good, which is a rare "complaint" these days. If our experience is the norm then the place has my highest recommendation. My only minor quibble was the coffee, just a little on the bitter side, but after an otherwise perfect meal this really is minor.
Amazed since the very moment me and my girlfriend entered. Visiting Edinburgh for a couple of nights and choosing New Chapter for their value lunch didn't dissapoint. They've put the prices up regarding lunch menu, but the produce and ingredients you get on the plate justifies it.
Food itself is a mixture of different flavours so every person can find something suitable. Meat, fish and veggie options are always there, and the puddings finish it of perfectly (obviously with a glass of dessert wine which is of a great value). Be back definately.
Booked this restaurant for my girlfriends birthday!! What can I say absolutely incredible find! From the moment we walked in it was amazing ! Staff so friendly ! Amazing and affordable wines and the food was next level. A small menu that just sings of the quality of the chef and produce, it's a kind of "don't worry we are good at this let us just do our thing" ! Amazing amazing place will definatley be back !
Found this restaurant almost by accident but lucky we did. Excellent meal before a resounding victory at Murrayfield. Steak Tartare starter was simple and different - heavenly and a full array of flavours. Hake in fish broth was light and simply divine. Welcoming and friendly staff and great service - the type that is not in your face but attentive to your needs. Will definitely be back
Unfortunately it was a cold night and I'm not sure the restaurant has a decent heating system as there was a little electric fan on floor but still cold.
Starters were very good but steak main wasn't anything special. Had a steak last week at the Wee Restaurant which was to die for and the steak at New Chapter wasn't a patch on it.
Service slow initially, we must have sat for 30-40 minutes before getting our starters. Mains and desserts came out quickly and everything was piping hot and freshly cooked.
A family lunch was the occasion and New Chapter delivered its very high standards as ever - the food was wonderful - hake was a real standout. Service was friendly and efficient. Superb value for money. This is a real gem of a restaurant - never fails to please.
Thanks again New Chapter!
Came here on TripAdvisor reviews for dinner and we weren't disappointed .
My colleague had a big steak and I had rump lamb. Meats were tender, juicy and just melted. Steak and chips were just straight forward good steak and good chips. Rump lamb was served with squash, kale and the sauce was extremely flavoursome.
Will definitely come back on my next visit.
We visited during a trip to Edinburgh for my husbands birthday on Sat night. We arrived 15 minutes early as we don't know the area and there isn't much around it so we went in to say we were early, the man who greeted us was fairly friendly but quite shocked/abrupt and said they had no bar area to wait at. This seemed fair apart from we were stood next to two empty tables for 2 at the entrance. I happily asked if theres anywhere nearby to go for a drink, as we were happy to, and he asked us to give him a minute. He came back and said he could actually seat us on one of the empty tables, this was great and we were happy with it but I can't believe we are the only people to arrive early in a city people often visit for weekends. It all worked out ok in the end, just a bit of a shame to get the reaction we did when we had read so many good reviews, but I do acknowledge we were early. The only other downside was the we ended up being sat by the door which is quite separated from the main tables in the restaurant, felt a bit crammed in & didn't get the atmosphere, however it did feel like a private area to ourselves as the other table stayed free. There was one other table right next to the bar which we saw one couple move from due to the cold are where the door kept opening and another couple of sat there spent most of the time looking like they were quite chilly too. Having said that, the food was amazing, I had the steak and chips then chocolate pudding which were both delicious. My husband had the scallops and then the fish dish which he said were really nice and then the ice cream for dessert. At the end I paid the bill and quickly realised I should have checked the receipt as we suddenly realised I had been charged for a bottle of prosecco instead of a glass, they quickly corrected it and gave me a refund. I would definitely recommend this restaurant, just don't turn up early and make sure you check the receipt! I'm sure these were one offs and we would go back.
New Chapter is very good indeed. It's nicely appointed (a huge improvement on its predecessor on the same site) and the service is nice and friendly. My main course of beef cheek was as good as it comes, but the scallop starter was even better, very special indeed. Prices are reasonable, and it is great that the have a good range of quality wines in half litre carafes.
Great restaurant and the plates we tried were all Fabulous . The quality of the ingredients was excellent and we appreciated the mix of the ingredients. Would definitely recommend and would return to this restaurant ! Great place for a date , everyday dining or a small gathering with friends . It is a little pricey but the food is 5* .
This is a nice restaurant with good food, a reasonable choice of food and wine without being too big , attentive but not intrusive staff. The place is split across two floors, the upper being one large room and the main restaurant. The slight negative was that our table was near the kitchens and felt a little like being in a corridor.
