Nellie's Southern Kitchen
While not inexpensive, the environment, location, entertainment make it quite a worthwhile experience.
The ambiance and decor were both wonderful. Unfortunately, the poor service and dry, overcooked food really took away from our overall experience. I had the shrimp and grits and, although the presentation was beautiful, it really lacked flavor and it was difficult to eat because there was so much food piled into a small iron skillet. My mother had the cajun chicken. The roasted potatoes were extra well done (essentially burnt) and the chicken was dry and tough. My son had chicken and dumplings. The dumplings and broth were good but the chicken was so dry. The worst part was that our server never came back to ask about our food.
We really wanted to like Nellie's but, unfortunately, we had a terrible experience.
Food and service were great!
The food and service was awesome! It was my daughter’s birthday celebration and all she wanted was to eat here. It did not disappoint.
Seated almost 15 minutes after our reservation.
Meatloaf very tasty. Sides average. Scrambled eggs not good.
Live music was an unexpected and nice surprise. Good quality and not intrusive to table conversation.
Good food; nice location, nice service. A bit louder than we expected, next time I would request a quiet table. Appreciate the live music, but our table was directly in front of the stage (first time here, didn't realize). Wish it was just a notch quieter so we could talk.
Loved everything about this restaurant. Very nice place with great food.
Great selections of food for our group of six. Very accommodating for the kids, and safe food (without MSG) for my wife. We had a fantastic visit.
Menus had stains on them. Silverware was missed matched and my husbands silverware was miss a fork. When he asked for a fork he was given a salad fork to eat chicken and dumplings. My mac and cheese was over cooked and dried out. Will not be back. Not impressed at all.
Awesome Southern food. Cool decor. Friendly and accomadating staff.
Great place to meet up with friends! Nice ambiance, casual and fun. Great food and service.
The food was excellent. We had to wait 20 min with a reservation and then were sat with another couple for our anniversary (which was noted on the reservation). Table service was haphazard and the check was rushed. We might go back again because the food was very good. I would not likely take friends as the service wasn't what I would have expected nor would I go for a special occasion again.
I learned about this place from a friend. I made a reservation for our group the day prior and upon arrival there was a wait. I would say it was about 15min. Our group consisted of 12 people and it was Sunday afternoon so not surprised. Our waitress was the sweetest and seemed very “go with the flow type”. I ordered the French toast for myself and it was great! There were no complaints at our table about the quality of the food. The only thing was some items got mixed up or forgotten about, but again it was Sunday afternoon and 12 people at our table. To sum everything, I will definitely be back!
Just multiple things went wrong, from no silverware even after dinner came, drinks took 25 minutes, food took long, reservation time had us waiting 25 minutes for a table. The experience was subpar. Salt? Anyone heard of it, Nellies didn’t, the lack of salt across the board was pretty disappointing, and every single table has a pepper shaker but no salt shaker? I guess they must have an uptick on high blood pressure people.
Not coming again, that’s for sure, and have not recommended to multiple neighbors and friends who asked about our experience.
Food was great! Music was good but a little too loud.
We live nearby and this place is a true gem for the Charlotte area! I have never had a bad meal, the drinks are awesome, the atmosphere is lively and comfortable!
Nellie's has a very special place in the heart of myself and my husband because we got engaged on the rooftop, so when we want to have a special date night, NSK is ALWAYS our go to. I made reservations for 7:15pm . We got there about 15 mins prior to and checked in... We didn't get our table until almost 8pm.. 45 mins PAST our reservation time.. No one apologized for the wait. You could tell our server was overworked and frazzled by the amount of people in the restaurant. Our food came out quickly (portions of it were cool/cold). We never got refills of our drinks. I've never been more disappointed in NKS as I was on our last visit. If it weren't for the special meaning it has for us, I wouldn't probably go back.
Made a reservation and still had to wait 35 minutes . Service
Is not good . Very slow
The atmosphere was great, had a rocky start with the food when it came out, but Mr. Jonas personally took care of the situation for my guest and I .
Overall we had a great time. But! Service was a little slow. We had to wait about 5 minutes for the waitress to take our drink order. Never was offered a refill on my tea. They should really work on that. But the food made up for the service
Pros: Beautiful ambiance. Chicken tenders were delicious, and I’m confident any chicken entree would be great.
Cons: The fries were undercooked, the $10 green tomato appetizer is severely overpriced for how puny and thin the slices are, waiter was very kind but a bit inattentive as a few of our drinks were empty for a while before asking for a refill, cantaloupe in the kid’s side dish had lots of green edges I had to cut off, so I feel more attention should be given during cutting. Also, on my opentable reservation, I made a note that we were celebrating a birthday and requested the circle booth with a high chair added, but apparently they didn’t read it or overlooked it or something.
We checked in, but somehow they forgot to call us to be seated. So even though we had a reservation, it took about 40 minutes to be seated. It took another 15 minutes before a waitress came to the table. The brunch food was good. The ambiance with the live music was always good. But when the food was delivered, no one had brought us silverware. The servers may be too overworked as it looked like she was hustling and trying. So maybe understaffed. I was underwhelmed but will give it another chance as everyone has a bad day.
No mention of the anniversary I put on my booking. Food was subpar, just average. The place was gorgeous though
Dinner for my husbands birthday and it was delicious as always!! The sweet potato cheesecake he got as a gift was the highlight and it was free!! Great restaurant to go to for dinner or any special occasion.
We went there for my husband’s 64th birthday with family. Everything was great! Bathroom were immaculate! Will be back.
Everything took a long time. It didn't seem that busy but there was along wait to get anything done.
Reservation ran behind about 20 minutes. We got seated at THE smallest 2 person table in the place. We weren’t thrilled about it especially being a first time there.
The food was decent. Had pimento fries for app, bbq sandwich and the salmon for dinner. Bathrooms were clean but trash was overflowing in male and female bathrooms.
No manage cane by to ask about our night or anything. And we believe it was brought to a managers attention we weren’t thrilled about our table selection.
We will give it one more try. Just need to work on small things around the place....
It was a couples Valentines Day outing. We had to do two separate reservations due to Open Table does not accommodate parties of 10 plus. We asked to sit close to one another. The restaurant did their best to accommodate. Overall great time and excellent food and service.
I like Nellie's atmosphere and service has gotten much better, it is a very good looking and comfortable restaurant. I would like to see a larger menu with more variety and some elevated Southern inspired choices. The traditional Southern fare is delish but gets old. Nellies has the potential to also be a good music venue, perhaps on week nights they can do better than the solo guitar musician that plays on Saturday nights.
We have been to Nellie's several times. I really love the food and atmosphere. Unfortunately on this visit, we waited at our table for about 20 minutes before anyone came over to ask us about drinks and it was the bartender that came over to us. He was very nice and took our drink and food order. He was very busy at the bar and he shouldn't have been the one that was helping us. It was just a lot slower service this visit than what we usually have at Nellie's.
Great time as usual! Our server was great. Even for Valentine’s Day we were very happy with everything! We’ve dined many times and NEVER had a negative experience. We’ll be back!
Amazing and comforting food. Environment was perfect. Shawn took care of us and ensured my wife had a wonderful Valentine’s Day. Thank you Nellie’s.
We loved our first visit. I had always wanted to come because of the Jonas connection, but when we arrived it was so much more than that. We loved the atmosphere and decor. The overall feel was really cool and homey. The food was delicious and we were served very quickly. We enjoyed both of our meals, Chicken N Gravy and Chicken N Dumplins, and desserts, Apple Tart Crisp and Banana Puddin’. . We will definitely be back.
Always consistent -- Always good -- Keep up the good work
Delicious house prepared food, and reasonably priced. Low light, pleasant atmosphere . We had a jazz guitarist playing while we were dining and it was outstanding! The biscuits and drunken collards and chicken and dumplings are superb. The 6 oz flat iron steak dinner that comes with 2 sides is delicious and only $13! Highly recommend
I love the Jonas family so much and this restaurant and its atmosphere are such a perfect part of Belmont!
Our first try at Nellie’s yesterday for brunch. First the decor is gorgeous. Well appointed tables, the place is beautiful. Not a bad assortment of breakfast items. Hubby loved the breakfast burrito and livermush side. I had the pancakes with a side of sausage. The cakes were a bit dense for me but the flavor was good. I’m thinking the waiter was relatively new. I asked for hot tea and he said they had jasmine and was that okay. I said yes, asked for a second cup and he brought me mint. I don’t think he realized there’s a box of tea bags. Breakfast burrito came with a side of grits which he had forgotten but brought them out when asked about it. He was a very, very pleasant young mam. Our next venture to Nellie’s will be for dinner or lunch.
Great food. Great people. Great atmosphere. Not much else to say. You will be happy you went.
I was disappointed to have made the reservation on OpenTable stating that is was a special occasion and even typed in that it was my wife’s birthday. Not a word or gesture was made to even indicate that they read the OpenTable reservation. It should not be an option if the restaurant isn’t going to do anything about it ... not even a “happy birthday, so glad you chose us to celebrate it.”
We really enjoyed the live music that was an awesome touch. The spin dip is phenomenal. Entrees were pretty good. The shrimp and grits could have been better. Good but nothing to rave about. Fried green tomatoes are my favorite and I’d say these were not the best, too much batter. Pimento cheese dip was good. The bread they serve with the dips are fantastic. Not too crispy and not too soft, just right. The atmosphere is awesome, we had a really good time. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive for the most part. Bathrooms are clean which is always a plus. Overall good experience and of course we will be back.
