Very much enjoyed the evening. The food was very different to other places with very interesting flavours.
Monster always delivers creative and delicious meals and top-shelf service. Sophie took care of us very professionally.
This was a mixed evening. The booking was easy although not our preferred time which suggests Monster is popular at 7.00pm. The service was good in some respects. For example we ordered three sharing plates one meat, the others vegetarian. When it seemed they would arrive individually my suggestion that a meat and vegetarian come together was easily accomplished. Perhaps people should be warned about the style, a single dish style wil not suit everyone. Another positive is that when the bottled water was finished and we didn't order more, tap water appeared almost magically. One coffee order was wrong, after some discussion. The wait person needed to clarify. Also, a request for an iced coffee with ice-cream should not have been hard to accomplish, both were available and it would not take much effort to put a scoop of ice-cream into a coffee rather than a plate! Restaurants do need to be prepared to make a bit of effort to ensure customer satisfaction. The food was pleasant enough, and interesting. For me the stand out was the tofu dish. This wove together silky tofu, a crunchy light batter and delicious rice. Seating was comfortable and a reasonable distance apart.
Once again a wonderful meal with excellent service. A big tick for the new chef! The
Awesome service and food, such a good experience and would recommend.
EXCEPTIONAL FOOD. KUDOS TO DAN, THE CHEF.
Truly inventive combinations with mix of flavor and texture done to perfection.
Food was really nice but tasting plates were not great for party of 3, awkward with one extra piece or pay individullay for pieces. Nice architecture and space but our seats had itchy material so we were a little uncomfortable. Extensive wine selection but very expensive. Noticed high chairs so it must be family friendly but we went for a girls (or mums) night out but felt like we couldnt afford to eat, drink and really enjoy ourselves due to prices. Its definately a special occassions kind of restaurant. I recommend checking the menu before coming along to make sure your expectations align. Lovely service and exceptional company. Still had a great time.
Amazing food and service! Extremely accommodating in all that we asked. Loved it!
Fantastic food with really helpful wait staff. We left space for desert and they were real standouts. Coming back!
Had the Chefs selection - and it was amazing. Everything was delicious and we was the perfect amount of food. You definitely did not leave hungry.
I couldn’t enjoy the food as I found it just too over priced and that fact became distracting.
The duck dish was by far the star of the night. Excellent!
This is my second visit to monster bar and kitchen. During my first visit, food and service was excellent but I was highly disappointed with my recent outing with them. It was very special birthday meal but only very few dishes were up to the mark. Overall, it was very disappointing experience.
The food was outstanding. We loved the variety of shared platters the waitress recommended!
It was like an explosion of taste on your tongue - very special! Great wine list!
We loved the timber and creative, stylish but earthy decor and the many different corners to gather. The fireplace adds a special feature.
We will definitly be back :)
My wife and I went there for a quiet dinner to celebrate our wedding anniversary on 6 November 2018. The interiors of Nishi Building, where the restaurant is, are always a feast for the eyes. Monster Kitchen there is no place like it in Canberra.
The waiting staff was very helpful and professional. We has read some negative reviews about service at this restaurant, but in our case, the service was simply 10 out of 10. The food came quickly, and although we interacted with four or five different waiters, there was none of that pretending-not-to-see when we raised our hand. The waiting staff acted as a team. It also seemed to me that whatever we told one waiter was perfectly communicated to the others.
We had never eaten at this place before, so we guessed and simply ordered what seemed interesting in the menu: eggplant with katsuobushi, duck breast with cherries, and lamb ribs. My wife and I were very happy with the culinary skills and care that was evidently captured in each dish. The dishes were perhaps the tastiest they could have been, without reaching the divine heights of my favourite Asian food.
(My wife, next to me here now as I write this review, wants me to make a special mention of the generous food servings. I agree that the quality and quantity of food in this restaurant make it good value for money.)
Prospective diners do need to know that parking in the building is not cheap - about the same rate as in Canberra Centre. But that is not to take away from the real pleasures of dining at this place.
Great restaurant to dine with friends and enjoy shared plates of delicious food with lots of variety to suit all tastes. Drinks also good and reasonable pricing.
Always fabulous, the food offering at Monster is consistently superb quality. We have always experienced excellent service and the staff are friendly and know the menu well. The bar also offers an excellent range of Australian wines and spirits. It can be noisy when very busy and not a venue for a very intimate romantic dinner but great for friends or a quick and tasty bite before or after the cinema or theatre. Prices reflect the quality of the food offered.
It took a while for someone to greet or acknowledge that we were standing at the entrance, about a minute. Then we were seated at a table which was a rhomboid shape and felt very strange. None of our party of three were facing each other. Thankfully the waitress moved us to another area. None of the wait staff we encountered were particularly friendly. We did have a nice meal. However, we asked if we had been given the wrong dessert as it was so far from what we expected. We all assumed we’d been given a chocolate berry dessert as the flavours of ginger, apple and rhubarb were missing. On the whole, the evening was nice but unfortunately for staff, not tip-worthy.
Overall a very pleasant evening. we stayed at ovolo so had a complimenatry breakfast also. Great staff and good service.
Great catchup with family member from out of town which showcases how great Canberra is .
The food was great, service and staff were excellent however their drinks prices were exorbitant
good selection of cocktails, very inventive food and warm ambiance. service was efficient and unobtrusive. wine list was good but very pricey
Monster has an eclectic menu - tasty, unique and creative. The service was particularly impressive. The waiter was attentive, personable but not ‘in your face’!
Very nice food, exceptional ambience, excellent service. We had 2 x lamb shoulder, a specialty of the house, shared a lovely big fresh green salad, hand cut chips, and a glass of quality wine, all for around $50 pp. There was plenty of food to satisfy our hunger.
The restaurant has an eclectic art collection and interesting decor, feels intimate and special, an extensive wine, beer and spirit list. highly recommended.
Great food and also amazing decor. A tasty fun experience. Well worth visiting.
We had a good night, the service was good while we were at the restaurant but disappeared altogether when we went to sit next to the fire and order dessert and a cocktail. Food was good, fried chicken was a tad dry and pork belly fattier than I have had before. The roast pumpkin was a standout. Weird menu, mostly breakfast dishes and the size of it made me feel like I was at Sizzler. We got espresso martinis and it was terrible - something went wrong there, so bad we couldn't finish it. I ordered strawberry shortcake for dessert and it was a warm mushed up mess that tasted like breakfast cereal. Warm cream was not great.
we were 8 for a wed nite work dinner - it had been recommended by one of my colleages who advised we must order the lamb - we were asked if we wanted to share & effectively 6 of us did the others due to food issues (vegan etc)chose not to - we were advised food would come out when ready but did not expect such a discordant level of food delivery on a mid week nite - we provided feedback that the lamb didnt have the pomegranate sauce = out of them was the response - i had the pork with kimchee -the kimchee was sooo overpowering - again i provided this feedback to our wait person but got no response or reaction - our sides came out before our mains & 1 person had finished their complete meal before another even started. i wouldnt come back with a large group & hopefully the service improves before i consider returning
Great service however the food was ok in comparison to some other Top restaurants in Canberra & for the $ was not worth it.
The decor of this place is great, and some really nice flavours in the food. However, I'm vegetarian and the set menu for vegos was really underwhelming. For $70 I got some olives, toast with labneh, eggplant, roast carrot and a share dessert. Didn't come remotely close what the others were eating, in terms of quantity or variety. We also found it quite awkward in that often I wouldn't have any food while the others were eating, and I would get "share" type plates (like a bowl of olives) but just for me - which is pretty awkward. THe flavours and ambiance were great so I'm sure they could do better.
The menu is unnecessarily complex and makes the assumption that the diner knows the words listed on the menu. Not too sure the type of clientele this restaurant is trying to attract. The people serving are the least bit attentive and have a no care attitude. Also $8 for a chicken wing is rip off. Definitely one restaurant I won't be recommending unless you are prepared to lift your game.
Great restaurant, food, cocktails and service. Nice ambient
I keep trying to like this place, and it keeps disappointing me. The food is pretty good, it is just so hard to obtain, because the waiters are thin on the ground, uninterested, and unhelpful. Maybe open a buffet?
Delicious food as always. Expensive wine but food good value (if you don’t choose the set menu...we had plenty of food for $40 pp (without wine), set menu is $70).
Good atmosphere. Order amidst chaos. Parking a problem
Very small portions and very expensive for what was served
I was disappointed in Monster. The atmosphere was strange with large tables next to more intimate ones, arm chairs more reminiscent of high tea, odd music choices. The food was fine. Overall I expected more for a top billed restaurant in a hotel as nice as the Nishi .
This is a great restaurant and bar. The food was fantastic-I recommend the steak tartare and pork belly with kimchi. Lovely ambience with the fireplace and the staff were friendly and accommodating of us.
Excellent kitchen with a variety of interesting well-cooked and presented Middle East based share plates. Yum
A good alround dining experience. Friendly and helpful staff and good ambience. We ordered the set menu for a table of six. Lovely food but on the small side.
