The food was amazing. The staff were very friendly and attentive.
Interesting and well prepared food but really pretentious. Not worth the amount of money it cost.
Intetesting food and decor. Limited vegetariam options - most were cold, not warm , options. Our wine was very late arriving - we were already eating our second dish. The hand cut chips were not freshly cooked. Good concept. Some improvements needed.
The food, service and ambiance of the place was good. Breakfast was tasty, staff friendly and attentive, and surrounds very pleasant. Portions were too small for the prices we paid. Either bring prices down or serve bigger portions of food. The poached eggs with avocado had only a slither of avocado, which was a bit disappointing, and the bread was only one small slice.
Let me start by saying that I’m a huge fan of Hotel Hotel and when it came to celebrating a special occasion Monster was top of the list. The food was fantastic but the service was so incredibly bad that I won’t be back. We waited over 30 mins for our cocktails which we ordered on arrival- then another 30mins for each bottle of wine that we ordered, only after we were lucky enough to flag down the waitress. They also seemed determined not to bring any water that we ordered. At dessert time they were out of one dessert and highly recommended another which they promptly forgot to bring. Not least I told the restaurant it was a 40th birthday celebration and they made no effort whatsoever for the occasion. A real taint on what was a special evening for us.
We were there for Saturday dinner. Food was served very promptly. However, all the dishes we ordered came all at once. There was no gap between entrees and main meal. We felt we were being rushed to finish and vacate the table. The dessert I ordered - green tea and coconut - was a bit bland even though it looked lovely.
Food and service were amazing, the only downfall were the cocktails. The clasics coktails were quite dissapointing
Excellent food and service, in an exceptional place
5 stars is not enough to really cover the wonderful service by the waiter who served us. A really good experience that will get us coming back again
This was our fourth visit to Monster and we were as impressed as the first time. The staff, innovative cuisine and attention to detail is what we have come to expect from any restaurant that the McConnell brothers are involved with. Thank you for a fab night
We had a great night at Monster celebrating a birthday. I’d heard from others that while the food is superb that the portion sizes are a bit small and that service can be slow. Well the restaurant must have listened and responded because the service was excellent and very prompt and the meals were both delicious and satisfying. I really enjoyed the night.
Fantastic food and service. Large variety of dishes.
Just your average 'trendy' venue offering share plates and cocktails. We loved our drinks, and although there was nothing wrong with the food, it wasn't great (or good value) enough to make us feel compelled to go back. Service was patchy - we asked for the dessert menu but after waiting 15 minutes for someone to take our order we decided to just leave. The decor is cool. Next time I'll drop in for a cocktail before / after a movie, but won't bother staying for a meal.
So happy they had a gluten & dairy free desert I could eat!
Monster is a welcoming space, full of intrigue. I found the food a little underwhelming, although their smokey eggplant and chocolate desert was of the highest quality.
Service is v good.
We tapas style share plates but the food came very quickly. Quicker than the coctails in fact
Overall a very good experience with friendly and knowledgeable staff.
Great food and very good service. Wine list is comprehensive. Desserts are a must-have.
The ambience was nice, it would have been better if we were given a better seating with a view of the lake or a bigger space as we specified it was an anniversary. The wine list was great but the food was a big disappointment. The steak was a bit brnt and portions too small and was delivered too late from the rest . Service was ok . I would go there for pre drinks , breakfast or dessert maybe. It was disappointing as we actually paid a good amount for what was actually served.
Great food and vibe but I thought the service could be improved. Hard to get waiters attention and cocktails took forever to come out that we ended up waiting until they arrived before we started the next course as we were going to finish eating before our first drink had even arrived!
The desserts were absolutely amazing though. The chocolate and coffee one and then the green tea and raspberry were incredible. The meal was good before that course but it was amazing by the time we had finished dessert
We really love Monster as a "different" food and drinks scene - good for catching up with friends from outside Canberra, showing off New Acton, interesting for and tolerant and encouraging for children. We were disappointed Saturday night that there was no option for leafy greens (lettuce etc is Ok but ordinary) as an extra. The deserts were overpriced, in particular the rhubarb , was it shortcake?, was not up to standard with dried and chewy stalks of rhubarb and too many other flavours. Tofu and pulled lamb were great. Servers could have spoken more slowly when telling us about dishes not written down - hard to grasp it all for a group of 70+s. Overall a really good evening.
Third time I have eaten at Monster and it delivers every time. Food is to die for (especially the lamb shoulder), cocktails are amazing and the staff are always knowledgeable, professional and very friendly. Quality assured. My favourite place to dine in Canberra.
We went the chef's choice at $70 a head. There was some beautiful dishes in amongst the ok dishes. In hind sight we would've been better off choosing our own selection. The 2nd last dish of lamb was too heavy for the last before desert, kind of ruined the experience. There was a lot of creative dishes though that used unique flavour combinations.
Excellent, creative food with a powerful flavour punch. Our favourites were the tofu (to die for), the tomato salad and the nectarine dessert. It's worth noting that although the sharing menu has a number of vegetable-based courses, many of them have seafood ingredients such as bonito. I am a fairly casual vegetarian when dining out, but if you prefer not to eat fish then it would be worth asking the servers if accommodations can be made. All staff were charming, quick and attentive, and the atmosphere feels relaxed but still a bit special. Highly recommend!
Excellent ambiance, great menu and sophisticated wine list. Really enjoyed our experience. Recommend the eggplant
The food was ok, but nothing amazing and not a lot in terms of quantity- we both left hungry. Service was quite poor- they forgot one of our dishes, didn’t offer us any more drinks and left us sitting for 25 minutes before they cleared the table and offered us dessert (which we had decided to say no to given how long we’d been waiting). All in all overrated and overpriced.
Great restaurant, great food! Excellent service and friendly staff!
Seriously stunning cuisine! Had heard great things and was not dissapointed. Everyone should eat here at least once in their lives!
Food was great and so was the service. Enjoyed it very much.
A great restaurant, and perfect for two or a small group. The service was impeccable, food comes out quickly but also in a thoughtful order and speed, the wine list has an excellent range, and the food itself is exquisite. One of my favourite restaurants.
The food was creative and the simple dishes were amazing. The service let down the whole experience and was not at the level commensurate with venue, food or price. Suggest you sit in main restaurant rather than shared tables if it is a special occasion.
We were in Canberra for a few days and stayed at Hotel Hotel. While we'd heard that Monster was good, we didn't realise how good. Rob the sommelier was charming, very knowledgeable and really easy to talk to. Our waiter Sophie was just gorgeous and really looked after us. And don't get us started on the food. We wanted to order all of it. And over the course of our four days, we almost did. I'm going to call it and say that Monster is my favourite restaurant of all time. Thank you Monster. We had a blast.
We’ve eaten here a few times and each time we’ve had a great experience. This time one of our party had some food exclusions and they had taken a menu and highlighted the items she could have. She said that this is the first time she has encountered this and that there were so many items she could have or that could be changed to accomodate her. Again we had a fabulous night and our waitress Sophie was outstanding.
We have dined at Monster a couple of times, the service is always a little hit and miss. 2/3 times we've dined there - our bills have been incorrect. In addition, the wait staff are not very attentive/have no idea whats going on. Different people serve you throughout the entire experience - so no one does anything pro actively. I've had to follow up on meals/service frequently.
Unbelievably great food..... Share plate is a wonderful idea .... So can openly dig into other people's food ! Not to mention it's great atmosphere. Highly recommended!
The service at Monster was excellent. We had the chefs menu which was very well balanced and delicious. I have been to Monster before and hopefully i will get the chance to go again. I highly recommend it.
The menu is imaginative with a choice of several bar size entrees and more generous mains. The style is shared plates. We were informed that for two people the recommendation was to order 3 mains and 2-3 bar plates. We obliged and ordered 3 of each. The result was that we had far too much food, way too much, even though two our bar plates really were sides (green salad and chips). We easily left 1/3 of the food which is not only a waste of resources but also of money. No room for desert. Overall the food was good, but uneven in its quality. The salad was too acidic and we had to send it back. The Smoked Eggplant would have been delicious if it had not been too salty. The fried tofu was the star, with beautiful flavours. The lamb with pomegranate and bric pastry was succulent and tender, but we had to leave most of it for fear of exploding. The wine list is also imaginative with several fairly unknown grapes, which makes it interesting. The service was generally good and friendly but some of the staff could do with a little more training in line with the general quality of the establishment, e.g. how much too order and not respond, when commenting on having ordered to much, with a 'at least our clients do not leave hungry'.
The restaurant itself was booked for a private function of which we were not advised at time of booking. Our wait staff were excellent but a little preoccupied with attending to fixing up billing errors. At one stage, nearly all the wait staff were behind the bar discussing some issue so I had to go to the bar to ask for another drink. Over overseas guests said it was a night of many firsts. The evening was overall great.
A funky place to dine for breakfast. Very funky 70s decor.
Great night out. Good food great cocktails fabulous atmosphere
