Merchant Osteria Veneta
Inspiration was drawn from many seductive eating spaces in the northeast of Italy. 1950s style American cocktail bars in spaces, which are sexy, relaxed and moody. Small bite size snacks ‘cichetti’ being served can be used as antipasto before the meal accompanied at the bar with a traditional Venetian cocktail or be eaten plentifully as a meal itself.
The pumpkin tortellini was very poor value for money. There was only about 6 pieces on the plate. The plate looked empty. The mushroom flavour in the risotto was too overpowering. The dish presentation was also poor.
The bread and olive oil was delicious. The fennel salad was delicious.
The managers can dress more casual to mirror the overall feel of the restaurant.
Decor was fabulous, the food was amazingly delicious and the service was excellent. Thoroughly enjoyable evening.
went for lunch - food was nice but for the price you can get the same quality at much lower cost..also very noisey.
First time it hasn’t been good. Steak was tough. I expect them to get the basics right. Unlikely to be back on this basis.
Great tasty food with high quality ingredients. Friendly service.
We booked Merchant for a lunch meeting with a prospective customer and were well looked after even down to our request for a quiet corner! Very happy
Food great and the delightful Italian waitress provided exceptional service
Lovely atmosphere. Excellent service and outstanding food!
Nothing to write home about. Food ok but nothing special. Service slow. Overall unimpressive.
Always a great choice when you just want to sit down and have a good chat over great food.
Pasta dishes were superb and good value
steak was cooked perfectly but on the expensive side
Sublime food & impeccable service as always. Looking forward to get another visit.
The fettuccine with spiced veal ragu was delicious, but the steak was horrendously overpriced ... $42 for a steak ... and nothing else. Had to purchase sides to make it a decent meal, which blew out the cost even further. I won't be back.
Food and service were great. It was quite cold however with a noticeable draft from where we were sitting near the bar.
We had the four course set menu. Generous portions, lovely dinner, well enjoyed!
I really enjoy my visit each time to the Merchant, the food is fantastic and the service has a touch of class that makes you feel like Venice is not that far away.
Overall a bit disappointing. Service was good but setting and decor not great.
Food average at best.
As always, the food was sensational, with simple ingredients done perfectly, however the service is what makes this place special. Our waiter was very attentive, knew the menu inside out, and was more than happy to accommodate splitting a pasta dish into two separate plates for the kids (in fact this was his suggestion). They also provided additional gluten free bread which was amazing! Keep up the good work Merchant.
Fabulous food cooked to perfection and great service
We chose this restaurant from the website, as it appeared to have a reasonable seafood content to the menu.
Unfortunately this turned out to be false, many items had apparently "sold Out" even though we were dining at 7pm!
We ended up with dishes that were third choice by the time all our other choices were not available - most of the seafood menu!
Not a good experience this time unfortunately - I won't be going back.
I love this restaurant!
Attentive and knowledgeable staff. Food was delicious. Range of choices on menu as well as specials. Has also a four course share menu option. Only niggle — bathrooms were outside of restaurant and down a corridor. Think they were building bathrooms rather than restaurant specific. Would go here again without hesitation.
I work close to The Merchant and use it often for business lunches. I've taken many colleagues and clients there over the years. Not once has someone told me that they did not enjoy their meal or the service. It is remarkably consistent as far as I am concerned. Well team to the team there.
First time visitor to Merchant and absolutely loved it. The ambience is wonderful and the appetisers and mains were divine. A truly wonderful dining experience.
Great Italian restaurant in the city - service is wonderful, staff friendly, attentive and with a sense of humour. Food is interesting and bar is great. Well worth seeking out
Unlike Guy Grossi other restaurant there is nothing spevial about it nor wrong with it. Was very run of the mill. No signature dishes and wait staff did bare minimum.
The air conditioning was too high.
We were served the "last special oysters of the day" told they were small but did not expect 12 thumbnail size for $54.00. They should have been returned to the fish monger.
We wont be back. Pity as we have used this restaurant for a corporate function previously and it was fine although expensive.
Well priced meal, fantastic wait staff and yummy food. Well worth a visit!
Exquisite food and ambience
In my humble opinion this is Australia's best and most authentic Italian restaurant and also one of my favourite restaurants overall. Service is as good as it gets, love the decor and ambience and the open kitchen where you can literally chat to the chefs should you so wish. But it's the food we come back for again and again ( and we fly down from Sydney for it!) - Gluten free bread that you'd never know was Gluten Free, GF pasta dishes and if you're lucky Chef will make you GF polenta ragu, Baccala is incredible and well - it's all just wonderful. Can't wait to return. Just wish it was in Sydney!
Restaurant was empty. Food was ok. No atmosphere.
A great place for dinner, excellent service, quality food, well prepared in a lovely setting
Really delicious meal as part of team xmas lunch - I will definitely come again as the service was outstanding and the food fresh and really tasty.
Great as always. Would recommend. Excellent menu choices.
The food was delicious and the service was exceptional! We were served quickly and the ataff were very friendly despite the place being so busy!
Beautiful food, fabulous wine and a wonderful understated vibe.
When in Melbourne I always try to fit in a meal at Merchant. This time the food was pretty good though must confess that my chargrilled spatchcock was slightly burnt. The arancini are superb and so very Sicilian - genuine. I do think Guy Grossi goes overboard with wine prices. The prices are extreme. One bottle of rose was so much more costly than the same one in Adelaide. Having bottles costings hundreds on the menu - as a standard price - is ridiculous
Absolutely loved the food, goat melted off the bone and service was impeccable 👌
Great place for a quick meal, when you have a young child. Ambiance lovely, and staff friendly and accommodating.
