We had breakfast, food was a bit poor.I ordered a tea,hot water in a cup with a tea bag,was not asked if we wanted sugar.Service and food was not good at all.We will not be going back
Food was average. I ordered an avo breakfast which consisted of one slice of sourdough with some beetroot feta, half of an avocado and one poached egg. It tasted fine but thought it was overpriced for $21. My partner ordered the MBV breakfast which tasted okay but the bacon was cold so it must have been sitting on the plate for a while before the rest of the items were cooked. The restaurant was probably at half capacity so wasn’t super busy. It was nice to try as never been there before but will probably not come back for breakfast.
Attended for breakfast. We were seated, but then took over 10 minutes for water and drinks order to be taken. We ordered meals at the same time to avoid extensive wait. But it still took over 20 minutes for two iced lattes and a milkshake, and nearly 45 minutes for food. When meals arrived mine (smoked ham hock beans) was missing a full element (zucchini flower) without explanation. I queried and server had to check with kitchen who offered haloumi in place. Advised I didn’t want haloumi so took what was left of the meal. When paying, despite the missing component I was still charged $3 for a single piece of additional toast. It wasn’t until I questioned it that the offer was made to comp the toast in place of the missing element. Food was nice enough - no crap but nothing special, but the wait times and then the rest lead to a disappointing overall experience.
Had a lovely night and all food and drinks we were served were delicious.
The only small negative was that not everything was available which wasn’t clearly communicated until we tried to order those items.
A very small negative on an otherwise flawless evening. We will be back.
The service was good and the menu was exciting but was a little disappointed with some of the meals. The olive entree was very good. The gnocchi was not at the standard and value for the cost - the texture was a little pasty. While I appreciate a steak has to rest it was medium rather than the requested medium-rare and only luke warm when served - the croquette was flat and had been sitting on the pass for some time before being added to the plate. The pork was very good. The desserts were fancy and looked impressive however both the mousse and brulee were runny rather than light and fluffy for the mousse and a creamy pudding like texture for the brulee. All of the meals tasted good, and were well presented and I did not point out these issues directly as I am not in the habit of complaining - it was a nice evening but did not quite live up to expectations
The service was impeccable, Food was amazing hat's off to the young chef and staff. We will be back
A very good dining experience with an amazing selection of food and drinks.
The service was poor we had to ask for water then our first drinks then they got the wine wrong the first time the second time when they come back we checked and asked again what the wine was and the reply was i dont know i was just told to give it to you then at the ened of the night when we paid the bill they had charged us the wrong wine only 50% dearer.
We were not asked again if we wanted another drink all night very average.
Delicious, classy food, a moody, but fancy vibe inside. Amazing cocktails!😋
Dinner was absolutely fantastic, will be back again soon
Wonderful ambiance with quiet appropriate background music.
Great menu with timely service.
Thank you Marvin for your personal attention and the beautiful Louis Freycinet chardonnay to accompany me exquisite truffled gnocchi.
Our third visit here and it never disappoints. Make it a priority to get here so you can share some amazing food, great service and an overall fantastic dining experience
The new tasting menu is divine, and the service was 2nd to none! Maison and Charli looked after us so well!
Great atmosphere. Food was excellent. Service slow to start but amazing as the night went ok. Thank you
Food was lovely. Service was unorganised. Very junior staff, which I appreciate needs to happen at times, but they didn’t look like they knew what they were doing. They were very lovely though. Just distracted from the night and the vibe. It’s a lot of money to pay for below average service.
Wonderful introduction to the new menu. Although a relatively quiet evening, we were looked after extremely well, the food was impeccable, as was the list of matched wines, and the whole evening was a delight. MBV is definitely my favourite restaurant in town. Personal touches by the Head Chef really made the experience special.
Has potential, but at this stage still needs fine tuning
I have dined at Matte Black on a few occasions and have loved it. Last night with menu change the food was not st all it’s usual standard, staff were very friendly but scattered and unobservant, resulting in bungled and sloppy service. The cocktails were incredible, that aside the experience was not at all worth the spend. Staff need to polish their training and the menu needs revision. Flavours weren’t there. Tough critique however this place holds great promise if they can get it right. I would normally highly recommend, but based soley on lastnight, i’d Be reluctant.
Very noisy. Inattentive staff. Drinks took way too long. We were there for 3 hours, it shouldn’t have taken that long.
Favourite restaurant in town, always a great experience.
Booking at 8.15 which we arrived on time for, though for some reason our table was given away. We were seated on a long table which felt odd (waiter was very apologetic and courteous though). Took a while to get my drinks, and while the food was tasty, it was also cold. Of the four entrees, they had run out of the ingredients for the one we wanted.
You might get away with this in Townsville, but in comparison to fine dining elsewhere, this place wouldn’t last.
A thoroughly enjoyable experience. The tasting menu was great.
Fabulous food and very accommodating staff, thanks so much for setting up the special table for us!
Outstanding and was delighted when they informed us the menu was changing next week.
Seems a good excuse to return again quickly
This is a venue that continues to provide good quality meals. The duck is to die for. I would highly recommend it. If you have the time (and the apatite) we would suggest the tasting menu for any first timer. If not, try to save room for desert as they are some of the most innovative offerings we have found anywhere.
High class, great food and quality staff. Set menu was perfectly matched to the wines.
Went for a birthday dinner with 7 people. Waiting over 20 minutes with none asking us if we wanting drinks or to order etc had to ask to order something. Then was an hour and a half before we got any food. Was at least 20 minutes in between ordering a drink and getting a drink. Cocktails were good but overpriced. Food was good but not amazing and not worth the money you spent. We got the 6 course tasting and I was still starving at the end. Booking was for 7 and we didn't get the least dish until 10 because everything took forever. Everyone else in the restaurant also looked very unhappy with service. Asked for water and was 30 minutes before we got it. It really was not that busy at all! Highly disappointed, especially considering the amount of money we spent!
Mixed feelings. Entree reasonable, mains were meagre and requests for well-done ignored, but dessert was delicious.
Took 3 hours to get to 4 of the 6 courses. Wait staff not consistent and no one was aware that we had chosen wine pairings with our meals so drinks were not consistent with menu, often coming out long after we received our food. We ended up leaving before the 5th course and were still charged $240 of the $280 degustation menu cost. Will not be back.
Staff was friendly, food was great.Where here for breakfast,we will be back.
Great Food, great service, wait times between courses a little slow.
I wish the drinks service had matched the food service. The kitchen was a well oiled machine as were the wait staff bringing the innovative deliciousness to our table. Not sure what went wrong with drinks service but cocktail arrived after entree and wine after main course finished.
Amazing. Absolutely phenomenally cannot wait to come back
My friend and I love going to Matte Black Violet. It's a beautiful venue, with lots of space in between tables, so we can chat away and not have to worry about eavesdropping.
We arrived at 9:45 - 15 minutes late to our booking and the service staff were still lovely and accommodating. The table service we received was exceptional. We then stayed WELL past close and the service staff just worked around us and were happy to let us keep chatting. We did not feel rushed in the slightest.
My only criticism is the proportions of each element on my plate. I received a whole avocado and a very small piece of sourdough, so they didn't quite work together. Other than that - it was delicious.
MBV is now our go-to for long catch-ups over beautiful food. Thank you!
Great food. Just wish there was more of it in each serving!
Seating and ambience was great. Service from staff was excellent and the food was amazing! I recommend. I will also be back. Thank you.
Was pretty not impressed with the the lack of knowledge from the staff due to management not training properly.
As a Hat restaurant I expected a lot more but it was Townsville also so I take that into consideration, food was not good temp and a lot of warm to luke warm so it was f the best experience.
Cocktails were on point so that’s a plus.
Poor service, worse food. Entrees served before wine but Dumplings were good. Lamb rack was incredibly tough, fat not rendered. 2 point rack, a teaspoon of roulade and 2 Dutch carrots is not a meal. We couldn’t eat it. We left and had another dinner. Plates were not even cleared when we left. Restaurant was not full or busty so can’t find any excuses. Won’t return
First time for us. Staff were very helpful and polite and professional. Duck dish was unbelievable, 5 stars, unfortunately the lamb rack dish was a little tough and plain, but still quite nice. Will definitely go again.
Trying to get a waiters attention was very hard at times
