Matchbox - Pentagon City Ratings and Reviews
The food at this restaurant is great and the food servers are very friendly. The problem is that it is extraordinarily loud. When I made my reservation, I requested the quietest table in the place. When we arrived at the restaurant, we were shown to the loudest table in the place--right near the bar, just underneath the ceiling-installed speakers with a booming bass. When I mentioned that I had made this request, the person who showed us to the table said in a very rude and condescending tone that they routinely fill up the restaurant and that this was the one table they had available. I saw other tables, further from the bar area that were empty, and there is an entire second level that is not as loud. What was the point of making a reservation if they were purposefully not going to reserve a table? I wasn't expecting a low-noise experience, since I've been at this restaurant before. However, I suggest that if diners put in a request like this, the management should at least have the courtesy to respond to say that this is NOT something they can accommodate. Then it would be the diner's decision whether to cancel the reservation or go with what they can get. Again--wasn't expecting a silence. But I also wasn't expecting a rude response after the reservation form specifically asks diners if they have special requests. Although this is a very convenient location to meet people, the food is great, and the wait staff (not the front desk staff) are terrific, it will be a while before I suggest going to dinner here. Very disappointing.
Giving one star because unfortunately, the restaurant called me about a half hour before my reservation to tell me that a pipe had burst in the restaurant and the entire facility was closed. I understand these things happen, but this event I booked was a going-away party that I had to quickly find an alternative for, and Matchbox didn’t offer any kind of resolution (rain check, coupon, etc). Oh well!
This is nothing like the other matchboxes. They ran out of Bloody Mary mix and beer. We understood the pizza might not come out with the other food but everything was cold or wrong or came out not even close to the same time. The poor waitress tried to keep up but was in the weeds the entire time and forgot drinks and sides. The manager was alerted to the problem and offered no excuses and took off of our bill at the end. Just a comedy of errors.
We had a group of 11 - both adults and kids. The atmosphere was great, the food was fantastic (especially the "simple" salad) and the service was fantastic with such a large group. Things were a little pricey, but overall everyone was very pleased with our dinner and we had a great time.
Excellent find. Perfect outside seating for a beautiful fall day. The food was delicious and the service attentive without being disruptive. Lovely atmosphere and seating was far enough apart so that you could talk without having to rise above the next table's conversation. I can't wait to go back.
The service at this restaurant is awful. The waiter didn't seem to know what he was doing. It took half the meal to get water for the whole table. One entree was brought out 15 mins before the rest. The bottle of wine that was ordered was just put on the table and then the waiter was like "oh do you want me to pour it for you?"! There are better Matchbox's throughout DC, don't waste your time at this one.
This Matchbox does not have it together yet. Our waiter tried his best, but the kitchen and food runners butchered him all night. Appetizers were coming out at the same time as entrees. The bar was messing up drink orders.
Not just at our table, either. It happened to at least two tables near us. One ordered the Ginormous Meatball and received at the exact same time as their entrees. We ordered six mini-burgers. They brought three, took them back, then brought six.
The entrees came out at almost the same time as our miniburers *and* we were overcharged because we were charged for two orders of 3 burgers ($12 each) rather than 1 order of 6 ($18 total.
When all was said and done, we paid nearly $200 after tip for a meal that was mediocre at best and poorly served.
Go to Matchbox in Chinatown or any of the other locations. This one is not ready for prime time.
I was treating my son and his wife and family to an anniversary dinner so they brought their children , four and six and the pizza was great for them! It took awhile, ( about twenty minutes) for a jalepeno margarita to arrive to the table, but the other drinks came pretty promptly, including the milk and apple juice. Overall, the service was great. Pricey pizza but the kids enjoyed looking down from the upstairs so it was worth it.
My guest, visiting from out of town, said, "This is my new favorite restaurant!" We agreed. The food was delicious and the service was excellent. The server was knowledgeable of their menu and gave us good suggestions. Their crafted cocktails are wonderful.
The Fashion Centre's newest culinary addition is certainly busy. The Matchbox is an energetic restaurant that offers its well known pizzas as well as dinner items. If you go in early evening, there is a large crowd for "happy hour." A more quiet experience may be had upstairs. Make reservations to obtain seating in this area.
The food, other than pizza isn't bad, but tends to be a bit on the salty side. If you are sensitive to salt, you may want to ask the waiter about this.
Personally, I was disappointed in both the presentation, the quality, and the overall price. For a group of 4, with no drinks or dessert, the bill was $108.00. I feel that we could have eaten at one of the restaurants in the district for this rate.
My wife dined here a few years ago and could not stop raving about the Shrimp and grits. We were in Washington for the weekend on business; ate downstairs on Friday night(she had Fried Chicken salad and I had Crispy half chicken; we shared Shrimp&Grits for appetizer). Loved them so much we returned on Saturday(upstairs with reservation). She had Crispy half chicken and I had chicken and Pesto personal pizza. Loved every bite on both nights. On Saturday, we shared the seasonal, Red, White and Blue for dessert. We love the place and the food! Would recommend to any and all!
Reservation was just before 7p.m. When we arrived we asked about Happy Hour. The hostess showed us the menu. What a great Happy Hour. Most of the appetizers are half off and the pizzas are were discounted. The hostess told us we had to be on the first floor in order to order off the Happy Hour menu. She found us a first floor table. The food was delicious. Best spinach dip I have had! The pizza's were delicious. We each ordered our own and it was just too much to eat after having the spinach dip. Great food. The prices are great... even better when getting the happy hour prices. We will definitely go back to this location or even this chain when we are in the area!
This place is always busy so I thought I would give it a try. Best time to go is during Happy Hour as selected menu items are substantially cheaper so it takes the sting out of some of the high prices. They don't skimp on the drinks. Ours didn't taste watered down and were among the best we've had anywhere. Whatever you do, don't get the BBQ Ribs, they are awful. Dry, chewy and overpriced. The sauce didn't help things either. The salad and cole slaw I chose as sides were very good. I especially liked the cole slaw as it was not runny as you might expect. You're probably safe with anything else on the menu, especially the sliders that were delicious. Service was very good and we were not rushed as I've read in other reviews. Our server was very pleasant. I will go back, I just won't select the BBQ Ribs next time.
My wife and I had brunch this past Sunday morning (around the time they opened). We were greeted promptly and asked if we wanted to sit outside (which we did).
We shared the cinnamon rolls and chicken and waffle brunch entree.
The cinnamon rolls served in the iron pan were very good but the icing was too much and overbearing. The waffles and chicken were good - especially the fried chicken - moist and crispy. The sausage gravy and maple syrup were flavorful and got the flavors of the entree just right.
My only complaint was the coffee. Matchbox would do well to invest in a Bunn coffee maker or equivalent product because the coffee - served to us from a carafe - was AWFUL.
A terrible experience with poor service, a lack of food availability, unapproved substitutions, and sporadic food arrival. This was on Father's Day as well which made it unfortunately a poor experience for my entire family. The staff was polite (with the exception of the two women who checked me in yet couldn't even look at me in the face or acknowledge that I had arrived for my reservation) and apologetic for sure. But quite honestly, it never should have gotten to that point.
