The word Makan in Indonesian simply means eat. It's also used as a salutation or invitation to eat.
Makan celebrates the different elements Indonesian cuisine; a fusion of vibrant, colourful ingredients, intensely flavoured dishes, and the people who come together and share it. With a warm ambiance creating an intimate retreat away from the hustle and bustle of the CBD, Makan is an exciting discovery of tempting flavours and a contemporary take on authentic dishes.

A modern twist of traditional Indonesian food. Great food and ambience.
The dinner was very rushed.
Didn’t have time to order dessert
Makan has been a fool proof choice for any occasions. I literally had Makan for birthdays (mine and my friend), just a casual night out with office mates, and dates (never failed!). The ambiance is definitely modern, almost cold in my opinion but once you are engaging with ANY of the floor staff, that warm hospitality is definitely overflowed the coldness of the interior.
The food is definitely amazing and authentic. As an Indonesian myself, I would say their food really hits the spot.
- the ayam taliwang (chicken wings) is a very good starter as it sure is packing a punch of flavours,
- the gado-gado (steamed veggies with peanut sauce) is very close to home, it taste like the one you'll get from the local street food (and that is very hard to get from a more 'upscale establishment, usually),
- their bebek goreng (crispy duck) is definitely tender and very well seasoned to the core,
- and ofcourse their nasi goreng (fried rice) offers you a specific wok based food that you can find in Indonesian street food.
- if you're more into a gentler flavor but still very wholesome, try the lawar (steamed veggies, dessicated coconut, with spices), its honestly my personal favourite.
- And if you're in the mood fo doing something something meatier. their iga bakar (grilled ribs) are definitely a go to.
-their repertoire of sambals, also taste very distinct to one another, be careful for those who ahs low tolerance to spicy food, you might want to steer away from the sambal terasi
the cherry on top for me would be their cocktails and dessert. I always start with negroni, and ends it with their cendol panna cotta. do yourself a favour and book yourself in SOON. :)
Great food great service would really recommend this restaurant. Great Indonesian food with a contemporary twist.
Delicious food, super friendly service. Great ambiance including background music. Fantastic place for all occasions.
We had a wonderful dinner at Makan. The food was absolutely amazing. We weren’t sure what to order so we went with a banquet of the chef’s recommendations and we were not disappointed. We sampled a range of different menu items and each of the dishes was delicious. We will highly recommend Makan to our friends and plan to eat there again soon!
Everything was amazing!
We loved our experience at Makan. The food and cocktails were excellent and the service was efficient and friendly. The music wasn't too loud (and they obviously have good sound proofing) so we could hear ourselves talk over a great music playlist! I've been to Makan before and it was my friends first time. It's a hidden gem down one of Melbourne's many hidden laneways. We'll definitely all be back and will recommend to our friends.
Really enjoyed it - delicious food and great service
Nasi Goreng Bebek
Tahu Sambal Ijo
Disclaimer: My mother and I are Malaysian Chinese, hence our opinions were coloured by our experiences of eating some of these dishes in the Malaysian style.
Whilst my father and myself did not have a particular issue with the sweetness of the dishes, my mother found the majority of the dishes to be too sweet and oily for her tastes. Compared to our preferred preparation of kangkung belacan, this rendition was rather light on the belacan.
The bebek goreng was well prepared and not too greasy in my opinion, considering it is a fried dish. I was impressed at the crispiness of the duck skin! The sambal accompanying it was one of my mother's favourite aspects of the main dishes, though we agreed that it could use more acidity.
The star of the nasi goreng bebek was the kaffir lime leaf, which added a refreshing element to what may otherwise be an overly heavy dish. This was probably my favourite of the main dishes we ordered.
Despite it's name, the sambal flavour of the tahu sambal ijo was barely discernible, however the tofu and green beans were cooked well.
The ikan bongkot was my mother's favourite of the main dishes, as it was a refreshing contrast to the other dishes we had ordered. While my father found it quite sweet (perhaps due to the apple), we all rather enjoyed it.
The highlight was definitely the desserts! The ketan hitam (which we know as bee koh moy) had a lovely texture and flavour; the individual grains of black rice were not too firm nor too soft, and the slight salt added to the coconut cream prevented the dish from being too heavy. The cendol panacotta was my personal favourite, with a lovely smooth texture and pandan-coconut flavour. The gula melaka used was rich and deep, and made a stunning end to the meal. Special thanks to the waitresses, who were wonderfully attentive and brought our orders out with incredible speed and grace.
Service was great, food far exceeded our expectations and was great value for money. I'm already planning our next visit!
Fantastic food and service! Will definitely return in future!
We dined at Makan with a large group and did the set menu. The food was delicious especially the Gohu, Kepiting Sola & Bebek Goreng! The sambal was spicy & tasty and a perfect accompaniment to many of the dishes. Thank you to the lovely staff who were accommodating, attentive and helpful from the time of booking. Keen to go back and try the À la carte menu!
Absolutely delicious food from start to finish! A rarity when it comes to food these days!
A nice variety of dishes and flavours. Maybe a little too much for our group, but that is not something to complaint about. All round a great night!
The tasting menu was great with lots of options for gluten free and vegetarian.
We walked in half hour before our booking time and they were kind enough to give us a table as there were few tables available. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Highly recommend.
Fantastic food and excellent service - highly recommend!
I loved the food. All dishes delicious and quick to arrive. Only the music was loud for the small room.
Great place, definitely recommend this place to others
Incredible food. Great value. Excellent and friendly service.
Great place with delicious food. Service was great and ambiance was fantastic. Will definitely return.
We decided to head out for dinner last minute and decided to give Makan a go. Booking was easy and with no caveats (no minimum spend, no mandatory banquets). What a pleasant experience it was!
Although we were late for our booking because we couldn’t find the entrance (our fault), the staff were so friendly when we called and helped us find it tucked away in an alleyway. They also seated us without any hesitation or fuss because we were late.
The food was genuinely amazing - particular shout out to the chicken satay skewers which are a must. We also had the soft shell crab bao, beef brisket and nasi goreng bebek and cannot fault a thing. There were only two of us and the food was bountiful and approx. $50 pp including drinks!
The interior design was very elegant - there was some chilled music and mood lighting, enough for us to see what we were eating and hear each other talking. The atmosphere it created was lovely.
The waitress we had was wonderful, very attentive and took the time to explain the menu to us. She checked on us in a very polite way and made sure we were happy with everything.
We will absolutely be going back and recommend to anyone who wants to enjoy a great meal in the CBD.
Thoroughly enjoyed our experience at Makan. The food was great and I loved that they weren’t huge portions, which were perfect to share, so we were able to try a few different things. Our waiter was so friendly and very attentive. Would highly recommend.
Delicious food and helpful friendly service - I would recommend this restaurant
This is a true Indonesian experience with its sooo delicious sate sauce. Wake me up for that! I don't think Australians know the real Indonesian kitchen that well; try this one out and you'll do it again and again.
The staff were fantastic the food was as good as Bali and the drink menu was great lots of choices alcoholic and non alcoholic
Great experience overall. I find the lunch menu is far better value then the dinner menu
Really enjoyed our visit. Staff were very friendly and helpful, food was delicious and reasonably prices
Would come back again and again, food and be venue was amazing
Walking into this restaurant had the wow factor. Ambience music was great staff were excellent, always made sure we were happy or needed anything else. Food was amazing we had the $59 each option and totally satisfied . Would highly recommend to try this place out .
Delicious food, served by friendly and attentive staff in a funky atmosphere. The Makan special was a terrific combination of dishes - each top notch in flavour and portion size. Fabulous Mothers Day experience enjoyed by the whole family. Highly recommended.
Great ambience , got a corner table as requested. Food was great with so much flavour , we enjoyed the beef ribs . Only negative is the tables are so close to each other so there is no privacy in terms of conversation. Wish the time period was 2 hours instead of the 1.5 hrs as we couldn’t get to desert as we had to leave . Overall great restaurant.
My second time here. Food was good not amazing, last time I went it was incredible. It is very noisy and lively so can be sometimes hard to hear. The staff are lovely but i also noticed service wasn't as attentive or friend;y - they seemed a bit more under pressure the night i was there - maybe they were short staffed that night
Great food for a quick tasty lunch! Service was perfect, good venue.
Our favourite go to Indonesian restaurant when we have a girls night out. As usual food and service top notch.
One of my favourite restaurants. The soft shell crab is superb and the service outstanding
Some of the dishes were a little over sauced but otherwise beautiful flavours
Our experience at Makan was very good. The food was delicious - great flavours and a broad variety of dishes (many of which are vegetarian friendly). The service was also worth noting. All of the waitstaff were very friendly and knowledgable about the menu.
