Established in 2007, Maedaya is a friendly, casual Japanese Izakaya spot in Richmond that serves up food as exquisite as some much pricier Japanese places around Melbourne.
In addition to their delicious food, Maedaya offer up a spectacular selection of drinks, including more warm and cold sakes than you could poke a stick at.
All the Japanese Izakaya classics are done well here, from crunchy edamame beans to succulent sizzled beef, and one of Maedaya’s main points of difference over other eateries along this stretch of Bridge Road – Japanese or otherwise – is their impressive, SUMIYAKI charcoal-grilled skewers. YAKITORI chicken skewers will be cooked perfectly for you by our experienced Japanese chefs at the open grill kitchen in a middle of restaurant.
Maedaya is great for group dining, but in that case it’s essential to reserve a bit ahead of time because it can fill up quickly here!"
Delicious, fresh, carefully presented dishes. A regular favourite dinner date venue, definitely recommended.
Come here very often with my boyfriend and it is our favourite! Love it!
Great food, great staff. Sake can be more affordable cos it’s a bit costly.
Interesting and well prepared food, really friendly staff and service. Well-priced. Thank you!
Great choice and quality of food! One of our favourite locals.
Had an amazing time! The staff were so polite and friendly, especially staff named Misa behind the bar. Food was fantastic and drinks were nice and refreshing. Definitely coming back again!
Seriously this is a great japanese place. Plus BBQ upstairs!
We went to have dinner 4 adult 2 senior, 2 kids on sunday night. When I made the booking, confirmed senior cost same price as child ($19). I brought my parents to the restaurant last sunday, both are over 75, But they charge them Adult ($38). Refer to the menu, it has beef, pork for izakaya. My mum do not eat beef, therefore i thought she can have pork. I can't believe, we walked in to the restaurant at 5:45pm ( restaurant just open for dinner), they said they run out of pork. Instead of Pork, they offer my mum a small plate of chicken. We joined their buffet (90 mins), Seriously if they do not have those items, they should not put in menu, should not put in iPad menu. Everything takes AGES to order. Such a simple raw Salmon, it does not need to cook ( no excuse at all), and the night it was a quiet night, surprisingly quiet Sunday night 6-8pm session, only have 2 tables upstair to serve, it only comes ONE time, i order the second time, it never come, until 7:30pm the waiter told us that's the last order, I am not very happy how to treat us. And I was my birthday dinner with my family.
We live locally and brought along some friends from Sydney - we all enjoyed the food. My girlfriend loved the Tofu and we just loved everything. Wine is a little hit and miss but great beers and cider. And the people in the kitchen knock out such great, fresh food in a very timely way.
Have been here several times and always enjoyed it. The BBQ used to be ‘order as you go’ but is now set menu do costs a little more.
It was generally a good place but we realised their menu has stunk, offering less variety of food. May be that’s due to the low after holiday season. But I hope they would bring back the usual menu soon. We love the ipad ordering system which made it so much easier and the food came promptly. We are not drinkers so I couldn’t comment on their extensive drinks menu but there was some very interesting items on them.
We came for the BBQ, but the room was no air-condition. It was too hot to cook and eat.
All was great except food came out too slow. The buffet menu was good value. We enjoyed spending time with our kids there. Will come back.
This was the third time our group of friends had dined here. Unfortunately they have changed the menu and taken off some of the best vegetarian options. They also only had one gf item on the menu but were happy to alter one of the rolls so my friend was able to eat.
Amazing. Never had a bad meal - Staff are always so friendly and nice as well.
I had dinner with a friend, the food was delicious and the ambience was great, my only complaint is I made a booking and had booked to sit at a table however we were seated at the bar.
The staff were friendly and welcoming. I found ordering food via a tablet really fun and gave us the option of ordering as you eat so we didn't over order. The food was very tasty and well presented. The venue is a nice layout and would suit both casual and formal dining. I would definately go here again and recommend it to anyone passing through the area.
It's was my hubby's birthday dinner. Maedaya nicely offered us a free small birthday cake. Food is good, but because it was on Saturday night, restaurant was full-house. I booked 5:30 - 7:30pm session. When I sat down, there were no other customers yet, and I believe staffs just started working also. I ordered the vegetable tempura in the first round, which could be just 10 mins after the restaurant door just open, no other customer come in yet. I cannot believe, the vegetable tempuar NEVER come til 8pm. Their replied was 'run out of stock'. I am pretty sure they will cancel dishes when the restaurant is busy, they will stop taking the dishes if they are short of staffs, or if the kitchen cannot handle the work load. I would suggest they should cross out the 'hard-working' dishes on Saturday Sunday, or else hire an extra person to take care of the 'Deep-fry' section to avoid all of the SUPPORTERS, valuable customers disappointment. I love Maedaya food, staffs are very nice, they always give us a smile and answer when they are super busy.
I have been visiting Maedaya for quite a few yrs now. Food have always been good. Big fan of the Japanese BBQ. A little sad the menu has been shrunk so much would have been happier if Maedaya adjusted the price instead. My last trip on Friday 23 was a big let down. I brought a group of friends many haven't been before. We ordered BBQ buffet and after the initial met plate we proceed to order more. Every time we ordered meat it either didn't came or came in one plate at a time. i can't speak for my friends but myself ordered 6 additional meat items but only 3 came. Funny thing is the orders for cooked items came on time and were accurate.
I will definitely visit again to see if it gets better as i do like the place.
IPad ordering and a noisy exhaust fan were a minus. Food is normally really good but just okay today. Left disappointed.
The Maedeya is good, but can be better. The service is quick and easy as we can order using the tablet. The restaurant can be made more modern and stylist. Overall the place is very clean and the staffs very attentive and they know the Japanese Sake and food very well. We would prefer more variety for Sushi.
I love visiting Maedaya. It feels like Japan with the regular ‘Irasshaimase’ greetings, Japanese beer, ordering over iPad, and lots of Japanese food. The yakitori can’t be missed :)
I love this place! Food is so fresh and delicious. Have been here many times seems first discovering it and I just can't get enough. The BBQ is really good value and the izakaya is really good too, a bit more expensive but you get what you pay for.
Wish coming here and try the Wagyu beef Buffet, but there's no Wagyu beef in the menu, good serve quite slow even just are dish, the Charcoal pot is pretty weak and need to wait sometimes to grill the meat, that's why we understand we can't order too much within 2 hours. Wait 1 hour for 6 slice of raw beef , can't believe. Can't complaint too much, with the price only $38.- But they should not promote with Wagyu beef that the main point I am not happy.
We were very disappointed that the fresh salmon was sold out. Our booking was at 6pm.
I am always very pleased to recommend Maedaya. They have one of, if not the very best variety of sake in Melbourne. The food is mainly hibachi grilled and very pleasant. I was pleased to enjoy my birthday there.
I've been coming to Maedaya for 10 years, it's my favourite Japanese restaurant in Melbourne! The food is consistently excellent, the service is friendly, customers are very well looked after. A little bit of Japan away from Japan :) I highly recommend it!
My girlfriends and I loved this restaurant two years ago and couldn t believe the change. The service was terrible, the quantities ordered were wrong, or the order did not come at all. The seared tuna was not tuna but processed unidentifiable pink fake fish. Midmeal our ipad was taken away, were we not allowed to order? There was smoke inside and the outside door went open at 9 pm at 13 degrees outside. Then our table light was dimmed. We felt we had to go and did. Never to return again.
Beautiful food and very good service.
We'll definitely come back again
Already recommended to my friends
9 of us ordered lots of different dishes including shashimi, yakitori, fried dishes and dessert. I wouldn’t order the tofu salad with edamame, everything else was good.
Really yummy and we were offered a sample of quite nice sake
They weren't even open when we arrived, despite advertising on their website that they're open on Mondays, and despite accepting our online booking!! I sent them an email expressing my strong disappointment, and they replied saying they no longer opened on Mondays, and tried to blame it on the online booking website. But I checked after receiving the email, and they were STILL advertising themselves as open on Mondays at that time. Get your act together, Maedaya!!! I've loved Maedaya for a long time, and have been a very loyal and frequent customer, but after some disappointing changes they made to their menu a few months ago, along with this, I'm not sure I can be bothered going back there.
Great choice of Japanese tapas. Very good value and friendly service.
sit there for 15 minutes and no one come to give menu and serve water. after 30 mins finally finish order food but keep giving me wrong food that I didn't order.
Made a booking online which was confirmed but when we arrived resturant was closed.
Always love coming to Maedaya! Such good food, drinks ans service at a good price. Authentic and tasty Japanese food!
we came in on Saturday and requested information in regards to all the gluten free options as we have celiacs in the family. We ordered the gluten free options being ensured that there were no traces of gluten, however my family members that are allergic to gluten soon after leaving the restaurant had sever allergic reactions. such a shame as I personally enjoyed my food and experience, but I don't have any food allergies.
Best Japanese. Casual but authentic.
Feels like real Izakayas in Tokyo.
Staff are always friendly and food is great!
