Set in the heart of Soho, L’Escargot, established in 1927, is London’s oldest and most renowned French restaurant. It has been host to stars of stage and screen including Coco Chanel, Maurice Chevalier, John Geilgud, Ralph Richardson, and was reputedly one of Princess Diana’s favourites. L'Escargot is now under the ownership of Brian Clivaz and Laurence Isaacson, who between them, have been involved in some of London’s most iconic restaurants and member's clubs. James Tyrrell is now the Head Chef and his dishes celebrate classic french cooking with a modern and healthy twist. Snails unsurprisingly are the speciality of the house; the dining room pays homage to proper French bourgeois cooking and offers exceptional value. L’Escargot has been voted London’s best French restaurant and has an excellent wine list.

This was my 4th visit to L’Escargot & as usual it was superb. We all had the Chateaubriand & I think it’s the best steak I’ve ever eaten. So delicious. My guests were all in agreement. It’s a fantastic deal, delightful restaurant with excellent service. What more do I need to say?

It is 30 years since I have been there and it has changed a lot! However the food is still excellent and the staff and service were great. The food was very good and we had steak, guinea fowl and duck. All dishes were very good and considering the reputation of the restaurant the bill was reasonable.

My wife and I booked the special Chateaubriand for two with welcome glass of Prosecco and were not disappointed.
A warm welcome and the friendly professional service added to the atmospheric decor and lovely ambience
The steak was perfectly cooked rare as we requested our waiter silver served on to hot plates together with
fresh watercress. A simple green side salad and crisp french fries complimented this classic dish together with a good quality Languedoc. What a delight...!!

This is a nice restaurant, pleasant surroundings, food nice but not as good as we thought. We are fortunate enough to eat a lot of confit de canard in France and this was a pretty bland in comparison. The food was fine but flavours in general were lacking for us. The best was the tarte au citron which was very good. Service was ok bit hovering but we appreciate some people do like that. Would not rush back but nothing really to complain about just underwhelmed.

Very enjoyable. The Chateaubriand deal was good value and the choice of one f the lowest price Cabernet Sauvignons went very well. We ordered Medium but it came medium rare, which was to my taste and just within the range for my wife who like things done little more. I suspect this is a cultural difference between French and English interpretations of steak presentation. That said it was delicious and we both enjoyed it.

In two words: utterly perfect.

My partner and I ate here last Friday evening for an anniversary meal, and were treated to exceptional service and food.

We enjoyed starters of soup, before sharing snails which were covered in the most amazing garlic sauce (they really are a must if you eat here). For our mains we shared the Chateaubriand, which came with two glasses of procsecco via an open table deal. This is shockingly good value for, perhaps, the most beautifully cooked steak i have ever eaten. I'll certainly be coming back for this, deal or no deal. Unfortunately we had no room for pudding, but coffee's were served with an array of petit fours which satisfied my sweet tooth!

The service was attentive, with our waiters being charming and present when needed, but not intrusive. The piano player was a lovely touch, and played a wonderful selection of songs.

Loved it loved it loved it! What a smashing and different place. Food was delicious and I didn’t feel stuffed afterwards, just comfy as one should be after three courses.
We had cocktails and delicious wine and were happy lingering after lunch until 4pm, which we appreciated enormously.
The staff were delightful, warm and friendly but not obsequious.
LeEscargot is our new favourite place in town.

Difficult to fault. Almost faultless service, apart from a minor mix up over one desert. Excellent food, good wine, charming waiters, lovely table. A great old institution of a place. Loved it. Have been before and wonder why I don't go more regularly. I shall! First class.

L'Escargot, Soho. My husband and I recently had dinner at L'Escargot. It was for a very special occasion. Unfortunately, we had to wait 35 minutes for our table. We were sent to the Library to have a drink whilst we waited. After 10 minutes my husband had to go and find someone to take our drinks order. After that things got much better. We had a lovely table and a lovely meal. The staff where very attentive. I would say that the wine prices where very high.

Can’t believe I haven’t been here before, great venue for a date. We had the chateaubriand steak which we were both very happy with and snails which were probably the best we’ve had in London. Piano player on a Friday night was a nice touch. Great decor (although some of the wooden chairs should be upgraded to the dark leather green ones). Great service too, we’ll definitely return.

Wonderful food and ambience and fantastic value. I had the octopus to start and it was soft and so tasty. You could tell it was freshly cooked. My wife had the lobster bisque and it was amazing. We had the chateaubriand as a main and it was cooked to perfection. Desert was also superb. We shared the champagne and raspberry jelly. All this with two glasses of bubbles and a glass of red wine for less than £50 per head including a generous service charge is fantastic value. We will definitely return.

My husband and I had a fantastic time for our pre-theatre sitting. It was very quiet when we first sat down but after our entree they put some music on which created a much more peaceful ambiance. The food was incredible, the risotto perfect. The wines were delectable and I highly suggest the Sancerre.
