Le Colonial - Chicago
What Insiders Are Saying
A formal French-Vietnamense restaurant in the Gold Coast that's not the coolest place in town but is quiet, well-run, and good.
First rate french influenced Vietnamese cuisine in an stylish venue in the heart of the Gold Coast. On cooler night the terrace windows are opened to provide fresh air and lower to noise volume. Do be careful visiting on hotter summer nights. If the windows are closed the noise level can be a bit high.
Excellent food in an excellent setting. Great service too.
Amazing decor. Highly trained and pleasant wait staff. Terrific food!
Always attentive from the time you walk in until the time you leave. food is always fresh and just the proper amount. near home so we dine here often. highly recommend!!!
The space is beautiful and the food exceptional. We tried a lot of different items and each were extremely well presented and absolutely delicious. Our service was wonderful, especially our main server Patricia. She’s a gem. Can’t wait to go back
Excellent lunch for our wedding anniversary! The only odd bit was that our server who started with us must have left or went on break but we were never told and a different gentleman started waiting on our table half way through the meal. I would have expected a quick introduction for the hand off. Aside from that-great space and food. We will be back.
Top quality ingredients prepared and presented with excellence. Impeccable texture and flavors. The decor, layout and ambiance transport you in another time and place.
We will definitely go back. All our dishes were great. No complaints!!!!!!!
The lounge truly offers a completely different experience from the dining rooms. You feel as if you are in an international setting and not in Chicago. Both rooms offer tremendous service and without question, exquisite meals. I was as impressed as I’ve ever been dining out. Great experience in every sense.
Ordered the duck and was very disappointed. Had the scallop and shrimp ceviche as an appetizer and it was outstanding. Could have skipped everything else and ordered 3. The other courses were good not great. The ambience is terrific. Very lovely! Service very good. They gave you enough time between courses not to feel rushed.
Amazing! I love it!!!
Had the chicken curry and it was amazing! Service and ambiance outstanding! Love , love, LOVE this restaurant!
Outstanding! We had a mini reunion with our nephew and met his partner after we all realized we were in Chicago at the same time.. Our “quick lunch” grew into late afternoon and we never felt even slightly rushed. Phenomenal food and service. We look forward to returning the next time we are in Chicago!
Great food awesome spot for lunch
Great anniversary dinner. Good food, great scene and great location.
Some of the greatest little gems inspired from a Vietnamese based menu also pulling from other Asian cuisines. The most perfect chicken and mushroom raviolis, carpaccio with great salad bed and seared scallops served on a large salad were amazing. We tried the house special crispy red snapper which was also very good. Highly recommended again. Great job guys, thanks
We had a lovely time with an early dinner. The wait staff was attentive and great with directing us in ordering. Beautiful restaurant. My 2nd time at new location. Order the Duck!
We took our son and had a great dinner. Being Vietnamese, we have always been impressed without their authentic interpretation of classic Vietnamese dishes. We had the egg rolls, spring rolls, stuffed rice noodles/“ravioli”, pho, lotus root salad, beef carpaccio, the full snapper, banana pudding, chocolate opera cake, and coconut panna cotta. I was hoping for flan, but everything was excellent.
What an absolute gem!
In every way.
As always, the service and food were spectacular! Everyone was welcoming and the menu offers something for everyone!
It was our anniversary. We had a late reservation. We arrived a little early. We were reminded 3 times that we had 10 min to order before the kitchen closes. 3 times! Twice before we sat down. Why take reservations that late then? The quality of the food has declined significantly since we were there last and way over priced. New location isn’t nearly as charming. We were so rushed. We redid our anniversary dinner somewhere else the next night. Will not be back.
The food was marginal for what you end up paying. Our waiter seemed board, entitled and spoke in one or 2 syllables. Odd service considering the price levels. Hopefully, this review can assist in him receiving some much needed coaching. We ended up leaving him a 15% tip when we always leave 25% normally. The last tip we left that small was about 15 years ago.
We loved it! We also want to,come back to the bar. It was full when we left, but we thought it was beautiful!
what a wonderful new location and what fabulous food. A must try in Chicago
A fun night. Good food and drinks.
What a surprise. This will be our new go to place when we come DT.
First time at the ‘new’ venue in Oakstreet!
Ambiance is very tasteful decorated, the food is great, service is nice however our waiter was a bit grumpy.
Authentic food with nice decor
We knew the restaurant from its previous location. The decor and space is even better in the new location. The menu has been updated and the food is superb.
Excellent! Long time patron!
we were fans of le colonial at its previous location, but at the new one, not so much. the table we were given was very close to other diners. the noise level was high, not energetic like i checked in the review(the closest choice you allowed), but loud. loud enough that a conversation required speaking loudly and was therefore overheard by people nearby. the food was ok. service was very good. new location, though they tried to replicate the old, is missing the cozy feel of the former.
Having been a fan of the old location I was a bit anxious about the new location ... but they totally made it even better. I will be returning again and again. This place transport you to another place and time. I was waiting for Humphrey Bogart to come walking in.
Fun place &great food! Patio is beautiful, however 2 top tables are really close to each other. Inside atmosphere has a great vibe.
The food is very good, the service was excellent, great p,ace! I just wish the host would offer better table instead of the worst. We had to ask for another table, not the one next to the kitchen . Other then that everything was just great.
All the food was great but the seabass was spectacular. They have great happy hour deals up at the bar too.
Beautiful upscale restaurant. Great food with small portions. Excellent service.
Went for lunch. A beautiful restaurant, elegant without stuffiness. Wonderful service, delicious food, felt like I was back in Hanoi. Really a lovely experience.
I’ve been a frequent quest to this wonderful establishment since 1997, yep, that’s a long a time, and I never had a bad meal or experience there. The snooty hostesses not withstanding.
The new space is beautiful, elegant, they did a good job keeping the old charm intact.
I proposed to my wife there, and been going back every year for our anniversary, and will continue to for many years to come.
We usually start with the spring rolls, and a couple drinks. For the main course we ordered the filet mignon and the chicken curry with a side of crispy red snapper. lots of food but how could we just pick one thing.
Mango sorbet with mango sauce for desert and a double espresso to rap the night up.
See you next year guys and thank you
It was wonderful
