This was a real find after the theater. Great service. Lovely setting. Interesting, delicious menu. Can’t wait to dine outside when the weather cools. This is going to be a regular stop in the future. A totally enjoyable experience.
Food was outstanding and innovative. Much fancier than it used to be. But the service, although pleasant and competent, was very slow. Nonetheless, it was overall a fine dinner and certainly worthy of a return.
I HAVE BEEN COMING HERE FOR YEARS, WHEN GEORGE WAS ALIVE. I TRULY THINK THEY HAVE LOST THEIR WAY. I ALMOST THINK THEY FORGOT WE WERE THERE. NO MORE
Everything was lovely! The food is delicious and authentic; we loved it!
La Tomate has a new chef from Italy and has upgraded its's menu to include some very creative, delicious, gourmet meals in addition to its good, comfort food pasta and Italian dishes.
Always loved La Tomate. Have been going here for over 20 years. Recent new chef and new menu! Only makes what was already great even better.
Delicious food and great service! We tried some new menu items and were very pleased.
La Tomate is a few blocks from my home and has always been a great place to go especially for the beautiful patio. However in the last year the Manager Jonathan has brought in a new chef who is making significantly fabulous culinary upgrades and changes. He is transforming the food and experience into something spectacular. I find myself craving the homemade pastas and amazingly fresh fish dishes with inspired sauces and sides. I understand they’ll soon be making homemade breads (my fav) so I’m looking forward to this. My only possible negative comment is that their wine list, while very nice, could be expanded. Back to the good - Service is fabulous and the bar tenders are great - Their Gin Ricky with a little elderberry lacquer is amazing. As I’m writing this I’m starting to crave their food so heading down for lunch on the patio!
We've been eating at La Tomate a long time but had not been there for a while. They have some new menu items and they did not disappoint. In particular, we had the new foglie d'ulivo, a pasta shaped like a leaf with crumbled sausage, tomatoes and dollops of burrata cheese. HIGHLY recommend that one.
It was a great evening at La Tomate. New items from the relatively new chef, and they were good. The garlic soup was excellent, as were the lamb chops. Loved the verdicchio wine. My dinner partner had the pork medallions, also an excellent choice. It was a very pleasant evening, and will be repeated quite soon!
The Sunday brunch menu was full of appetizing items. It was beautiful to sit outside and observe the Dupont Circle neighborhood.
Only OK but prices fair
This restaurant has improved with the hiring of a new chef who really knows how to cook excellent Italian food and the presentation is terrific
All service providers were extremely nice and helpful. The portions were on the smaller side. Would return.
The service was very poor. The food was okay, but certainly not worth the price. The pasta selection was fairly small given that it’s an Italian restaurant. The worst part of the evening was that the waiter seemed wasted. He was very slow to bring us food and was clearly trying to rush us out of the restaurant even though we were sitting outside and there were other open tables. I would not go back or recommend this restaurant to anyone.
Excellent home made Italian food & seafood. Beautiful outdoor seating. Excellent and unusual desserts.
Happy anniversary dinner served capably by Justin was delicious & enjoyed on the patio .. beet salad appetizer, lamb chops, polenta & asparagus tasty! The complimentary tira misu was a 😋bonus
The dinner was fair. Salmon dish was very small and not the best piece. The Italian dish was fairly tasteless.
As always, excellent although disappointed that they did not have my favorite dessert: Aspasia.
Service was slow and almost non existent. The food was poorer. Bread and meal were dry. The caprese had no flavor.
It had been awhile since my friends and I had gotten together and one of them suggested we meet up at La Tomate (again) but I made the reservations to ensure we wouldn't have to wait for a table. The location is easy to get to with METRO (Dupont Circle) and, although there is outside seating, I decided we would sit inside (plus, it was a bit rainy but they do have an awning that covers some of the outside area....maybe NEXT time on a nice, Summer evening!)
Food was wonderful (I had the salmon) and loved, loved, LOVED the Lemoncello Blush as my drink for the evening. The ambiance and location was great for an evening for friends to catch up on what's been going on (Gee! Was it over a year since we last saw each other??!) We were able to talk and hear one another and our waiter/server gave us plenty of time to decide, drink, and eat without feeling like we had to get in and get out. Friendly and accommodating place! Excellent selection of food -- especially since one friend has gone "vegetarian" these days.
Would return to this place for another meet up! Another wonderful evening for friends to catch up!!!
The food is fine when you finally get it, but service is so terrible that when it arrives you probably will have lost your appetite. My review is based upon a recent Mother's Day visit to the restaurant. The restaurant acknowledged that there were problems with service that day, but nothing should ever disrupt service to that extent.
We will not return to the restaurant, and will discourage others from going there.
Ambiance: we sat outside and wanted quiet and that's what we got
Service: they weren't authentic Italian, but very friendly and focused on having us enjoy our meal
Noise: got a table outside and away from other tables. Perfect!
Was totally disappointed.
it used to be much better as I remember....
No more for us.
New chef, amazing food! Pasta is delicious. Attentive and friendly staff. Great outdoor seating. Hadn't been before today, but I will be back :-)
Lovely restaurant service is very good. Food is varied and enjoyable. All dishes needed some spice. But eat here whenever in dc.
Caesar Salad excellent, Calimari fantastic, Lamb Chops wonderful, Bread very nice, however my date’s CAPELLI D'ANGELO was barely edible. The ball of pasta was pressed together, barely warm, and had no flavor. She doesn’t like to raise a fuss so wouldn’t let me send it back. The “bacon” on it was cold and tasteless as well. At no time did anyone stop by and ask how we were doing until we finished.
I’ve been there four times and have been pleased, so I was very surprised this entree was so bad. We may go back.
Great for all occasions. Terrific location.
Celebrating the third anniversary of our move to DC.
Im confused by the positive reviews. Some dishes are inedible (cheesecake) and others are simply poorly cooked ie mushy pasta and tough, un-flavorful, meat.... shocking given the price point.
Great new chef!
We had not been to LaTomate for a number of years and did not remember it fondly. But we agreed to meet a friend there and were pleasantly surprised. The service was excellent and the food a very good effort to be Italian (full disclosure: we lived in Italy for nearly a decade and find "authentic" Iatalian cuisine hard to find in the U.S. LaTomate did a pretty good job and we'll willingly return the next time we are in the DuPont Circle area.
Met up with ab old friend- ate great prosciutto and talked for hours- pasta with duck ragout - excellent!
The food was delicious, the wine excellent and the service outstanding! Very comfortable and welcoming.
I reserved for two seats but usually when I show up without reservations I get a better table. The one I got this time was a round little white table close to other tables which makes you uncomfortable because you sit too close to others.
The food was fantastic. Had an issue with my order, it got lost in the kitchen, so everyone around me got their food and nearly left before I even got my salad. The waiter was useless in straightening this out. But once I asked for the manager, he got things moving and covered my main dish along with a glass of wine. So in the end they made it right. The 3 star service comment is about the waiter- not the manager. He did his best to apologize and make it up to me. So great recovery!!!
On Sunday the grill was being repaired and only part of the menu was available. We shared three choices from prosciutto bar and each had a pasta: the seafood pasta made with squid ink and the Venetian ragú, served on papardelle in place of the menu’s listed rigatoni. Both pastas were tasty.
Expensive and disappointing. The food was so unimpressive. Not even the olive oil was good.
On the first beautiful Spring day there couldn't have been a better spot for lunch. We opted to sit inside but the wrap-around Windows made it perfect. The restaurant has a generous covered outdoor dining area as well. My guest had ravioli, I chose the ahi tuna salad. Both were exquisite. This longtime Dupont restaurant is a gem. Highly recommend. Service was 5-star. Ask for Anthony.
