La Sardine is a West Loop staple serving classic French comfort food for Lunch and Dinner. This first-rate bistro is decorated with warm cherry-wood accents and brick walls compliment vibrantly painted columns. La Sardine features classic French dishes ranging from Escargot à la Bourguignonne, French Onion Soup, House-made Charcuterie, Lyonnaise Salad, Bouillabaisse, Steak Frites and the best Soufflés in the city. La Sardine offers an extensive French wine list that is approachable but will intrigue even the most die-hard Francophiles. La Sardine has daily specials Monday through Friday that include half priced bottles of any wine on the list on Mondays, a $38 prix fixe dinner on Tuesdays, and dollar oysters at the bar on Fridays. In addition, La Sardine offers a happy hour Mon-Thurs from 3-6 with $1 oysters and wine and beer deals.
The lamb was delicious however the sides of the entree came out very cold. My partners suck came out very rare, almost uncooked and was extremely chewy and inedible. When we complained, it was sent back to be reheated.... the customer service could’ve been better surrounding the food and him having to wait for his food while he watched me eat mine. We’ve been here before and it wasn’t bad, the quality has been inconsistent.
Never disappointed! I come here several times every year, grilled fish collar is my favorite and can't miss the soufflé!
If you love French food, definitely give this place a try - the place is large and did get lively, but has that small restaurant feel to it, which is great if you like a Mom-n-Pop feel. We had a birthday dinner for a total of six people; ordered escargots, morels on toast (2x!), steak tartare, terrine de foie gras (even a person who dislikes pate loved this), and two (French) cheeses from the five that were available. Everything came out really quickly, was adequately hot, and tasted delicious. For dinner: A white fish with capers, which I think may have been a special but I highly recommended it, 2 x perfectly done (served medium rare) duck breast on the savory side, lobster roll (I thought this was a bit too soggy for my liking), lobster ravioli - one giant dumpling with lobster meat in it in a delicious white sauce, and salmon in filo dough - think sandwich-like, not my favourite of the evening, it was well cooked, but the filo and lettuce accentuated the salmon flavour too much for me. We topped the dinner off with the raspberry and chocolate souffles (the raspberry one was just right - not too sweet, not too tart). I will definitely go back for a regular dinner; Le Bouchon is their sister restaurant, equally amazing food there. I will add that Dan, our server, was excellent with timing out our food - they seemed to have great staff, all around, really. He even brought out a little sorbet with a candle to help me celebrate.
Great food...soufflé was outstanding as was Beef Wellington.
The food was fantastic! This restaurant is off of the beaten path in the West Loop so it seems more intimate. It was the perfect place for a date.
The food was excellent! Very great quality of food and outstanding service.
Go on a Monday night....not crowded, not noisy, and wine bottles half off....plus the food is good.
Always great! A regular go-to for our friend group!
Everything was good, but the fish was a little fishy and while the service was adequate, our server didn’t seem to care much and just went along with whatever we said.
La Sardine is always delicious -- amazing food for a great price. The French onion soup and the souffle are not to be missed.
we came to lunch for their famous souffle and got to know that they dont serve souffle at lunch :( kind of a bummer. However the food is really good, onion soup and escargot are both top notches!! they are cheaper than most of the bay area french bistros with better taste and flavor!
The inside decor is a little bit out of date, our waitress was not that attentive, otherwise it would be solid 5 star.
btw, we came back for souffle on next night, which def worth going !!!
La Sardine is an awesomely inspired dining restaurant that floods with natural light and perpetuates positive energy. Land or sea, plant or animal, it's being fired up in the open kitchen. The smells are hypnotic and the service is choice. Enjoy.
Our meal at La Sardine was a celebration of friendship, and the evening was wonderful. The food was out of this world, as always--Bouillabaisse, and Steak Frites. Escargots and the French salads for appetizer, chocolate shuffle for dessert. A nice, fresh, dry rose for summer. The service was impeccable. The only negative I can think of is that there was a party at one end of the room that was a bit noisy, which made it difficult to talk. But otherwise, this was an outstanding experience! Thank you!
It had been some time since my last visit to La Sardine. I have been missing out. The service was professional and friendly. A big surprise was to learn that, on Mondays, the wine list is half-price. We took advantage of that and splurged on some great Champagne and Burgundy. The food was outstanding. I can't wait to return.
Fabulous Beef Wellington.
Been coming here for annaversery for years. As usual, food & service excellant. This year noise level was high. Almost impossible to hold conversation across the table. That said, we'll be back next year.
We live in the neighborhood and have walked past several times and finally decided to try it. There was plastic in the foie gras and when we told the server, he just took it away with no apology or offer to replace it with another appetizer. He also didn’t tell our actual waitress because we had to ask her to remove it from the bill. Our entrees had good flavor but we could only manage a few bites because they were so salty. The restaurant itself is very charming. We wanted to love it and were bummed it wasn’t what we expected!
Highly recommend this place. The service is outstanding,
Great for lunch. Nice specials at a fair price. Great service
One of the great things about La Sardine is the consistency of its cooking. This night the confit of duck was dry and overcooked and the "souflees" tasteless. The charcuterie plate was poor.
BUT our server, Dan, was excellent and he directed us for after dinner drinks to a lovely quiet place within walking distance. Still has a nice vibe, but they must up the food-in the evening anyway.
Great food and the crew are very attentive and nice...
We were so excited about this restaurant after the demise of the legendary Bistro Zinc. Alas, though the service was very good, the food was decidedly inconsistant. The steak tartare - arguably the best in the city. Thé bouillabaisse broth was seriously boring though the fish was well prepared. The salad lyonnaise was so disappointing though the salad endive was excellent. The chicken entree was excellent. Superb wine list.
As a final note we were disappointed to see a young man sitting at the bar with his pants so low as to exposing his underwear. As fashion statement possibly but offensive to any civilized diner. He should have been turned away at the door. Oh, additionally the music was not at all French bistro style.
Great all around—classy and fun! Loved the thoughtful service (thanks Dan!) and the ability to have a conversation at a reasonable volume.
The server was very professional and smooth with word choice and movements. Approached the table in a very conscious manner that represented proper etiquette. The dishes were very delicious despite the fact that it was my first time trying French cuisine.
A really nice restaurant that I visited with a friend for a catch up dinner. Service was excellent, attended to all of our needs but not too “present” as often times servers can be. Food was delicious. I’d have preferred my magret to be a little pinker than it was, and a little cheaper than it was, but you can’t have everything. I’d go back l, and I’d recommend. I lived in France for a few years and this was the closest to a French dining experience I’ve had in the US.
Dan was a great server! Good food!
Best French restaurant in Chicago! The bread, mussels and Sole pour Deux were amazing, can’t wait to try more dishes. Our waiter and overall service was great! And the chocolate soufflé.... wow!
Although previous visits have been enjoyable, this one was less so. The steak was a bit over cooked and tough. The noise level was terrible due to a party of 6 women who all must have been virtually deaf, because the were talking so loudly we had difficulty talking at our table 3 tables away. Lastly, the window bench seat was uncomfortable. Out of the restaurant’s control was the music from the street fair.
Not great meats and noisy. Had a better experience our prior visit on a slower day. They ran out of the sardines that the place is named after!
Best martini, warm atmosphere, creative menu, spectacular souffle!
From the moment you walk in the door, you are transported to a French bistro. Loved the steak frites and the duck. And, you can't leave without a dessert souffle. They're large enough to share.
Birthday. Great cocktails and wine. Beef Wellington was superb. Also mussels!
Le Sardine definitely merits a repeat visit; the food and service were excellent. We were there for lunch and the room wasn’t filled to capacity but I thought it could have gotten quite noisy if it had been. Also, cabs were at a premium, though they do offer valet parking and the car attendant worked very hard to get us a cab. Will definitely be visiting again.
Food was excellent from walleye to lamb. Excellent service from Dan!
We are constantly blown away with the food and the fun at La Sardine. Superb. It's only hard choosing one thing to order - since the whole menu looks good. Can't wait until next time.
The menu right now is outstanding. Luckily we had a big enough group to try many things. The beef Wellington and sole for two) were fantastic, as was the wine selection and pistachio soufflé. Of course, Dan’s the man and still the best server in town.
Due to the air con that was blowing directly on us it was very cold and unpleasant ... the service and food was very good
Great service wonderful food. But loud but sat next to a large party. Overall a great experience.
LaSardinewas outstanding. Evening started with. Cocktails. We had smoked Salmon and an endive salad to begin. Salmon was nicely plated with all the accompaniments. The salad was nicely dressed and topped bleu cheese and hazelnuts. Our entries were tuna and halibut. Both prepared just right and accompanied by vegetables and grains. We had a very nice fresh, crisp Savignon Blanc withe dinner. Desserts were apple tart with ice cream and a chocolate soufflé. Dan, our waiter, delivered top notch service as usual. It was a great night.
