Excellent but pricey
Outstanding cocktails, sake flights, and small bites. Not sure I've ever been someplace that compares to this. Julia behind the bar was uber knowledgable and helped guide us through a sale flight, cocktails, and a few small bites. Everything was extremely impressive!
Our server was fantastic and took the time to help us navigate thru the menu. Drinks were good, creative for sure, but didn’t stand out compared to other well made drinks. Food was truly incredible but no value for the money. Restaurant was extremely cold (temp) and a bit sterile. Potentially a spot for a special occasion but believe there are other more thoughtful spots that offer a better overall experience for the money.
It was my first time at Kumiko. I read about it in an article, and the mention of Oriole chefs in combination with Japanese inspired cocktails seemed interesting. I was not disappointed. The late night menu only had two options but they were delicious. The milk bread was crispy, well caramelized, and the truffle topped ice cream was a rich delight. The drinks were delicious too. We were able to try all 3 deconstructed flights. The favorites were the Daiquiri and Sazerac. The Sea Flower cocktail was unique and appropriately named.
I am definitely coming back.
Kumiko is certainly a unique and classy place for Japanese-inspired drinks. The service is impeccable and you can tell that everything from the decor to the service was diligently crafted. The drinks are unique and tasty and the server has extensive knowledge and will make recommendations to you based on your preferences. I think the food is pricier than it should be - you should not come here hungry. The food are just small bites, good as a snack but don't count it for your full meal. Looking forward to coming again and trying more drinks.
Excellence is an understatement...
Best spot to brag about Chicago to out-of-town guests. Reliable food, excellent service and out-of-this-world drinks.
One of the best cocktail programs in the country, particularly if you like Japanese flavors / spirits. Highly recommend.
Went to get the omakase at the bar upstairs, only to find they just moved it downstairs like 2 weeks ago! Not to worry, Julia Momose offered to pair some drinks with the bites on the upstairs menu! (I’m a bartender, so I came in specifically to check out the beverage program and it did not disappoint!) Some of the best drinks I’ve had in chicago in recent memory! Just wish there was either more food offered at the bar or the bites were a bit bigger for the prices. Overall fantastic time and would definitely go again.
We thought it was a restaurant and it was a bar with Japanese tapas. Tapas were good and very expensive. Very confusing place not a bar not a restaurant. I think they should go back to serving meals and then serve their wow factor specialty drinks.
Some reviewers grouse over portion size or cost, insisting that conventional measurements take center stage. Kumiko provides an epicurean experience that you must embrace—even prepare for, and certain diners simply cannot find their way. Happily, as you read reviews here, diners who appreciate their evenings far outnumber those who do not.
My guest and I sat upstairs and ordered everything on the menu. There wasn't one item that flagged behind another—each was a revelation. The ranges of flavor, texture and presentation were maintained at the highest levels and intensities. Cocktails (and the menu itself) were carefully researched, imagined and prepared with culinary precision. Thank you, Julia Momose. Our server, Amber and additional support delivered warm, unpretentious service at every step. It really was a perfect dining experience
totally awesome!! The best Japanese Restaurant in Chicago Amazing cocktail program
Overrated. Doesn’t feel like a cocktail lounge at all. It’s set up as a restaurant but the menu is a small selection of one bites. The drink menu is interesting but nothing over the top. Don’t understand how Food and Wine listed it in their top 10 new places in the country.
Kumiko is so special that I went back after my first time only six days later. Every detail is thoughtful and the service is incredible without being cliche or over the top. I love the "spiritfree" menu with TEN non-alcoholic beverages on it; this was the impetus for bringing my friend who doesn't drink and they were so happy! The drinks and food have so many flavors without being complicated or over the top. My friend and I were celebrating our businesses's anniversary and they gave us each cards all signed by the staff! I will keep it forever! Also definitely worth noting is that the co-owner/mixologist Julia and Chef de Cuisine Mariya are women of color. In such an extremely white male dominated field, this is so encouraging and worthy of support. Kumiko will continue to be a go-to spot for me for special celebrations.
The most beautiful experience you could ever imagine
We loved everything about this place. Came only for drinks but ended up having just a nibble or two since it all looked delicious and we couldn’t resist (we had dinner reservations elsewhere and didn’t want to spoil our meal). Fantastic and we can’t wait to come back to try their omakase!! Highly recommend.
Amazing place, just magical. The ambiance is beautiful, the service was wondering, specialty cocktails amazing and small plates were delicious
Absolutely Fabulous. Exquisite cocktails & spirit free offerings in a lovely setting. Amazing food too! Can't wait to return.
When you ask two times James Beard Award winner Belinda Chang where you MUST go in Chicago and she tells you Kumiko, you go. Congrats to Julia Momose for creating the most remarkable experience of dining and drinking along with executive chef Noah Sandova. Be sure to try a couple deconstructed cocktail!
Lovely server and excellent food and mocktails!
Impeccable service and an amazing dining & cocktail experience!! Cannot wait for our next visit!!
Great service, inventive food, fun night. Thanks
The drinks are overpriced and not that good. We tried a total of 6 different drinks at our table and we only liked two of them. If they were delicious, we would not have been as irritated that their cocktails cost 25% more than at high end bars/restaurants (e.g. $19 for a vodka/sake/tea-type bev). The food was fine, but also pricey. For 6 oyster, 4 pieces of sashimi, and 4 cocktails, our bill was $150 before tip - which would have been alright had it been delicious.
Be careful when you go and which side of the restaurant you are seated. We were there from 5-6:45 and the sun was going down and beamed in on us, because they do not have any window shades. So looked like a total tool wearing my sunglasses indoors. Also note, finding the washrooms is an adventure, and not a fun one.
For a unique and special dining experience, Kumiko is the place to go. We celebrated my daughter’s birthday with an a la carte dinner and we had a wonderful time trying all six dishes on the menu, plus drinks and sake to go with them.
The servers were friendly and informative; the food was delicious and beautifully prepared; and the ambiance was attractive and soothing.
This is a great place to pre-eat and pre-drink prior to a late night dinner reservation, but not a complete experience. As a former New Yorker, I am no stranger to shared small plate concepts, in fact, a common complaint of mine is the gargantuan Chicagoan portions.
This, however, takes New York small plate standards and laughs in the face of them. $12 for one oyster, $25 for a cocktail flight that, if poured together, did not add up to the volume of one standard cocktail. Don’t get me wrong, it truly delights the senses, the staff could not be more pleasant and the ambiance is well considered, but this delight remains small & ultimately leaves you wanting more in a way that leans a bit unsatisfied.
Every single thing we ordered tasted special! The food was small portions, but we didn’t mind bc every bite was complex, interesting special and unlike anything I’ve had before.
One of the best new places in the West Loop. (And I think I've tried them all!) The food is all memorable. The tempura shrimp are the low point, I think: they're beautifully presented but not exceptional. The dessert is very "Western" in its intense sugary texture, which I think some people will very much like. For me, every other dish is exceptionally well judged and presented. The cocktails are insanely inventive, and the four I tasted were all excellent. Our waiter was stellar: knowledgeable and cynical at the same time. Who could ask for anything more?
The place is confusing to find, unless you happen to go to the corner of the block first. There are at least three doors marked "630," including a Roti outlet! Kumiko has made a small anteroom for reception, and it isn't the West Loop's most successful space (i.e., not like Jugen's) but inside it's friendly and accommodating.
Absolutely amazing experience. The staff was very knowledgeable and helpful to ensure a great experience based on our individual likes. The drinks were outstanding and the food was just as wonderful. I cannot wait to go again.
Super sweet waiter. Beautiful restaurant. Romantic atmosphere. 5 stars all around!
Love love what Julia is doing a Kumiko. This bar is destined to be a Chicago treasure.
Fantastic. The best place to enjoy a drink in Chicago. The food is excellent as well. No surprise the Oriole crew nailed it.
Wonderful ambiance-great for conversation. Cocktails were delicious and interesting. Food was spectacular.
Everything was cooked and presented perfectly. There was nothing to improve! The drink menu was expansive and creative. The food was filling and satisfying. The decor was gorgeous and the wood has a story. I was greatly impressed by my dinner here.
This was the best culinary experience we've had in I don't know how long. I simply cannot recommend this place highly enough. GO!
It was a great place for a birthday dinner with a good friend. The food and service were fantastic.
