We had the most amazing evening last night at Koutoubia. The lamb shank, bistilla, salads and martinis were fantastic. The service was warm and welcoming. The environment was beautiful and comfortable. The value is tremendous -- a special, elegant and delicious meal with drinks for much less than many fine dining establishments charge. It was a memorable, exotic, romantic, and delicious experience.

Step in to Koutoubia, and you be transported to a beautiful space filled with rich tapestry, colorful rugs, silk pillows, and cozy corners. It feels as if you are in a luxurious tent in Moroccan setting. The food is delicious, and tastes home cooked.

Love the belly dancer! Wish they still had more of the tradition...owner used to wear more traditional garb, pour tea Moraccan style...it's lost some of its authenticity but still a fun place to go

We had the place to ourselves which was great for us but really backwards for the quality of the food and ambiance. We were served by the husband and wife owners themselves and they were so respectful and sweet. It’s our new birthday tradition!

It is a wonderful place, out of a storybook. It was so great to be able to be with my family to celebrate a birthday and experience amazing Moroccan food. It was also wonderful to spend some time with the owner, who sat with us and shared some family stories.

Delicious Moroccan food. Tasty salads and flavorful B’Stia with ground meat, powdered sugar in a flaky crusted pie. There is a special cocktails menu but we didn’t have one this visit. Try the lamb shank with vegetables and cous cous and the tangy chicken with raisins, cous cous, carrots and zucchini.

My wife and I have eaten here many times and this will be the last. The proprietor never fails to be unfriendly and often nasty. This time he outdid himself. We had a 9:30 pm reservation after a movie. I realized the length of the movie would make us late so I called in the afternoon to let them know we’d be there about 9:45. When we arrived at 9:50 the proprietor was quite clear that we were late even after I reminded him I gave him advanced warning. When he took our order, and we ordered a relatively light supper, he said that our order would not reach a $15.00 minimum per person so he couldn’t take the order. I told him to charge the 3 of us $45.even if our bill wasn’t that high. As it was our bill, including 3 glasses of wine, came to about $120.00. The food was quite good but the unpleasantness of the service made it clear we will not return.

LOVE LOVE LOVE! Came here on a Tuesday night with my girlfriend and enjoyed a really delicious and beautiful meal! The restaurant is decorated pretty authentic as are the traditional meals on the menu. The service was AH-MAZING (granted, we were the only ones there, but still). Would definitely come back with a larger party/group!

Go for the delicious food and, if you like, the Pomegranate Martinis! Enjoy the authentic Moroccan decor - tented ceiling, upholstered walls, cozy banquettes, brass tray tables and all kinds of lovely decorations. The owner is reserved, but if you are polite, he is too. This is a family-run place and a quiet, warm and cozy place to enjoy a lovely evening.

We were meeting friends we hadn't seen in a long time and they wanted to make it special. We decided on Koutoubia because it has one of my mother's favorite dishes . . . Bistilla, which was yummy. We ordered the salad combo plate for the table as an appetiser, and my other friend had the appetiser size bistilla for herself. My other friend is vegetarian, so he ordered the couscous with root vegetables. My mother had the entree size bistilla, and shared the salads. I ordered the lamb tagine with olives and preserved lemons . . . HEAVENLY !! A whole lamb shank swimming in a rich dark sauce, redolent with the scent of lemons and brinyness of the olives. It was served with the same mixed roasted root veggies and couscous my friend had as an entree. Even though I hadn't been to Koutoubia in about 2 years, the food quality remained as high as always . . . and the owner, Michele Ohayon, was his usual charming self as he served us personally. The decor at Koutoubia is classically Morrocan, with colorful banquet seating, pillows, and round carved and inlaid tables with huge round brass trays for tabletops. Even the ceiling is draped in colorful silks. Because of the way the tables are laid out, each one has it's own private area which makes intimate conversation possible and quiet. I'm sorry so much time passed between the last time I was there. It certainly won't happen again. All in all a very enjoyable evening !!

The most authentic Moroccan restaurant in Los Angeles. Run by the same owner for decades - and he came and talked to us about Morocco. The food is delicious. We had couscous and lamb and Moroccan salads. They also have wine, beer, and their take on a number of cocktails. The setting is a desert fantasy - like the inside of a harem tent. Couches, scarves, hangings. Great for a celebration or a date. It was quiet the night we went. They have belly-dancing one or two nights a week. There is an attached bar that does happy hour and has a more contemporary feel. The setting will transport you.

The Moroccan food is of good quality. The belly dancer was professional. They were stingy with the bread. Bread is essential for eating Moroccan food. Usually, at such restaurants, they wash your hands with warm water. They did not do this. Getting the wait staff attention was almost impossible. The woman tried her best to take orders and serve the meals. Unfortunately, the older man, who I assumed is the owner, was brusque and gruff, and often barked at the patrons if they failed to understand the menus or protocols. We watched him lose his temper many times at people and groups. They did not serve us tea and missed some of the food we ordered. It took forever to get our bill. They did not know how to split a bill among two credit cards.

I feel sorry for them. This place could be a success if they would hand over service to a professional and stop acting like peasants in a third world country.

I am saying this honestly, not to be mean, but to try and help them survive.

A friend pointed me at Koutoubia a few years ago and I am always glad to have an occasion to make the effort to get across town to eat there. The food, as always was excellent.

Was a little disturbed to find that the website no longer posts their hours of operation, but the Open Table option is a good addition.

Tasty Moroccan cuisine in a very comfortable atmosphere. Relax in cozy booth-like spaces on cushions as you await a feast for the palate. Koutoubia offers an interesting drink menu with reasonable prices. We like the Kir Royale.

Definitely start with a salad sampler with wonderful and varied tastes, including beets, eggplant, olives, tomatoes, carrots, etc.

The bastilla is to die for. If you've never had this ultra flaky sweet/savory dish, you're in for a treat. If you're already a fan, you will love this version, one of the best. This last time we dined here, we got the bastilla as an entree so we could share it among 3 people (it easily will feed 4). The appetizer size is not enough for fans of this amazing dish, although the appetizer size is probably large enough for 2.

We also had yummy couscous with chicken: juicy and flavorful. In the past, we had a dish cooked with prunes and nuts: amazing.

Finish it off with hot mint tea, poured from on high. Service was excellent. On a Sunday night, it was pretty quiet, but on Friday and Saturday, expect more parties and probably even belly dancers to entertain.

I was drawn to the restaurant by the marketing on the web site with great food and entertainment, but after spending some time there I realized that the service was changing progressivley from one visit to another. To make matters worse the owner of the restaurant was serving our table. Our experience started off very welcoming, but before we knew it we felt a very hostile environment. We felt very pressured to order dinner even though we had verbally explained to our host that we were still waiting for our friend. Owner was focused on the large party in the other room, and did not seem to care about us. Not only that, the food was rather expensive for small servings, and did not live up to the great ratings. Would not return.

First of all, the food itself is of the highest quality, and consistently so, I've been to Koutoubia twice for dinner so far. They get all the basics right and then they add their own unique touches which I will let anyone find out about for themselves. The atmosphere is exceptionally comfortable and friendly. The decor is exciting -- an escape to a foreign land. Michel himself is a gifted host, a natural-born restauranteur. It is a delightful experience to be taken care of by him.

Had a great business dinner here. Our out of town guests loved the food - they had never had such food or been in such a charming Moroccan atmosphere. Half in our group were vegetarian and they had plenty to choose from, even tho the menu is limited. You will like this place! Go!

The restaurant is beautifully decorated. We were disappointed that they did not have more vegetarian options. The only menu offered was the prix fixe dinner. The shared salad course was too small for our group of six. The cous-cous was rather bland and the portions of the main course were minimalist. We felt it was not a good value.

This was a great "find"! We were the only couple in the restaurant for most of the dinner (that's great for us; bad for the business!), which made it super romantic and cozy. The service was fantastic, from the moment we walked in the door. The menu was diverse and met all of our expectations. I definitely recommend this neighborhood gem!

Went for dinner on a Sunday night. The interior is sumptuous, and meant to evoke a yurt. All tables are booths heaped with cushions and plush stools. Staff were attentive and quite nice. The food was enjoyable, although the portions ran small. The style runs more towards Moroccan comfort food than haute cuisine, but was appropriate given the ambiance. We will be going back and taking friends since it seems like someplace to entertain. The cocktails rate 6 stars. Someone behind the bar knows what they are doing.

Amazing lamb and chicken dishes and incredibly attentive service in a relaxing atmosphere dedicated to allowing you to escape from the world outside. The merguez sausage was delicate in texture and exquisitely seasoned, and the B'stia au Poulet was fantastic, with crispy pastry and a sweetness and spice to the chicken filling that was neither cloying or mundane. And I could eat the Tagine d'Agneau M'Rouzia indefinitely, as it was some of the best lamb I've ever had. I'd heartily recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for an intimate meal or a festive group celebration.

Koutoubia is a very solid restaurant with a wonderful array of Moroccan/Persian cuisine. We both had lamb and couscous based dishes, which were very tasty. We also especially liked their after dinner hot mint/honey tea. Additionally, their bakalava is quite tasty and the right portion size. It's not an inexpensive night out but well worth it for the tasty food and vibrant atmosphere. I would certainly recommend this restaurant to anyone.
