King's Joy was definitely a disappointment. Rather than being a thoughtful exploration of vegetarian food, most courses were very similar in terms of texture and taste, albeit prettily presented. Everything could have used a pinch of salt. Exceptions were the fried rice course, which had very balanced flavours and the tripe course -- although the "basil sauce" was stuck to the plate which implied to me the plate was pre-sauced a few hours in advance. I also felt it was WAY overpriced. As my "celebration" meal at the end of a long journey, it definitely didn't live up to my expectations.
I have been to many fancy restaurants but this restaurant sticks out as being one of the very few that I’m still reeling from more than 24 hours later! The service, pace of the dinner and experience were impeccable and set the bar! Thank you for having us as guests! :)
A fabulous, memorable meal. An event, really. Expensive, but worth it for a special occasion.
Great Ambiance ! Good Food ! Perfect service !
Enjoyed the time we were there !
The experience from the start to end was amazing. Delicious & nice presentation of food.
We’ve not been to a Vegetarian restaurant before and this was just exceptional, every course was beautifully prepared and tasty we didn’t miss meat at all. I’m surprised it doesn’t have a Michelin star it’s that good.
It was a perfect dinner for both. Perfect menus, perfect match with red Australian wine.
It's the best and fanciest vegan restaurant I've ever been to. Okay, it's a vegetarian restaurant but they can customized your meal to make it vegan. It's on the more expensive side but for once in a while it's okay to splurge.
One of the best restaurants we have been to. It is set in a siheyuan which is a historical type of residence with a 5 star ambience. Food was unbelievably good. Set course meal - each morsel was delicious.
The atmosphere was amazing as was the food
Very friendly and professional service. The food was so unique and exquisitely prepared and presented. Our best meal during our trip to China.
Lovely setting, knowledgable and friendly staff that speak good English. Oh, and the food was outstanding too.
Impressive location, food and service.
Special arrangement after notifying the occasion of celebrating birthday! They took photo and gave me a copy with a nice photo frame
One of the best vegetarian restaurants I've ever dined at, beautiful ambiance highly recommended
Marked as a must-go restaurant in Beijing after seeing reviews online, and it definitely did not disappoint! Right opposite the road to Yonghe Temple, easily accessible by the subway and car. Hidden inside a beautiful Hutong, stepping onto the grounds of King's Joy is like taking a step into the past.
We came on a Saturday morning, the restaurant was packed, yet you did not need to shout to hear your friend talking. The tables were spread far enough for privacy and comfort. In the heart of the restaurant, underneath the sun-kissed roof, sits a lady playing the harp. So tranquil.
The menu was massive! You could either take your time flipping through the seemingly never-ending list of delicacies, or you could opt for their well thought-out set menu. We opted for the prior and (over) ordered whatever drew our attention. Every item was delightful, including stuffed lotus pancakes, red curry with scallion pancakes, eggplants, yam with special sauce, scrambled tofu and egg with pancakes, and stir-fried pea sprouts. Although we definitely ordered enough food to feed an entire family, we were left (very full) very satisfied. The beautifully aged pu-er tea was the perfect companion to the meal.
Neither me nor my friend was vegetarian, but at King's Joy, we did not miss the meat at all. I would recommend the restaurant to anyone around the area looking for authentic, delicious Chinese food, as well as a comfortable and tranquil environment to dine in.
An truly amazing all veg dinner, I (as a steak lover) was surprised by the diversity of taste and beauty of plates. Go on, this is pioneering delicious work!
Fantastic all round ! Thank you for having us, it was amazing !!
Beautiful food, elegant surroundings, attentive but not overly intrusive waiting staff. Only comment is that over head lighting is too harsh. Candles or soft table lamps instead of harsh top spot lights?
The staff the ambiance the food eveeything was PERFECT! Totally loved it and will definately recommend to everyone, will consider coming back to Beijing just for King’s Joy. Also perfect for vegetarians as well.
I went with a friend who is vegetarian, and I had not expected much for vegetarian meals. This restaurant truly overwhelmed both of us with their beautifully crafted dishes, surprising textures and flavors, and presentation. We were snapping pictures away before we devoured the dishes. I think the chef should be awarded three stars with Michelin food guide.
Wonderful food and atmosphere. We enjoyed ourselves immensely. The food was delicious and the ambiance was quite magical.
