   I have some severe allergies and often end up on a drip in hospital with cross contamination. I always let restaurants know before I go, so they can choose not to serve me. Many take up my offer! In this case Mindy and the team made sure I had a couple of options and we planned in advance. My food was delicious, thoughtful and carefully prepared. The entree, oysters with a Native sorbet were tangy and a slight bitterness to offset the creamy fresh shucked oyster. The main, a smoky kangaroo fillet with a fiery hot sambal and macadamia rice was warming to the soul on a very cold night. My husband wasn’t as keen on his, we don’t eat a lot of salt so he found the main too salty. But the lychee cocktails made up for it! The space is lovely and has a great feeling to it. And for me, as a local to the area, it is so nice to see some smaller spaces developing interesting flavour profiles and focussing on service, rather than the large soulless restaurants that seem to be a part of Byron now, that don’t appreciate their guests (take it or leave it, and if you don’t like it we have plenty of others who will pay to be in this hip space anyway). The service was excellent and you can tell the kitchen is highly disciplined and well managed. I do have to mention the “bloggers” at the table next to us who clearly did not seek permission from the chef, the artist of her menu, to set up a small studio with bright lights and take images of her food for posting. The lights were distracting, and standing up and snapping photos to “get height” was not cool. We see this more and more, and I just find it rude. Please ask the chef first if this is ok. And think about those around you who are trying to enjoy a quiet meal. We might actually start heading back to the Bay to see what else is new. Thank you Karkalla!

   I have not eaten a lot of native ingredients but this was one of the best meals I have ever had. Amazing flavours and everything on the plate was well considered and well executed. The cocktails were also delicious!

    A wonderful experience - the deep fried salt bush! The smoked butter with damper! The perfectly cooked kangaroo fillet! Great to see a restaurant run by a First Nation Bundjalung person serving glorious native food. Thank you.

    Fantastic food. Definitely worth trying a couple of dishes from each part of the menu. Sharing is the best way to try as many as possible. And the damper!! We went for a second lot and considered thirds. Lovely waitstaff. Kids options were great and desserts a delicious finale. Look forward to going again.

    Outstanding dining experience, food is creative, unique and fun. The staff are attentive, engaging and happy. I would eat at Karkalla weekly if I lived in Byron!

    Great place for locally sourced seasonal produce and native indigenous ingredients. We shared the damper with wattle seed and bush honey butter; crispy eggplant with Davidson plum pepper-berry sauce; green papaya salad with macadamia nuts; Nimbin jasmine brown rice with mixed herbs and macadamia and the Native curry with charred fish, mussels and served with house made roti. It was absolutely delicious and we’re keen to come back. The service was wonderful plus they have an interesting cocktail menu. 5 star ⭐️

    We enjoyed our first visit to Karkalla on Thursday evening A great evening, sensational dining experience with family visiting from overseas Each dish was delicious and scrumptious Definitely will head back again The staff were attentive Good to listen to Mandy’s goals to encourage gardens in schools with native theme’s and book ideas too

    Staff were really attentive but not over the top, food was really tasty and had some unusual but appreciated twists, prices in line with other higher quality restaurants, wine list good but slightly limited.

    Had a wonderful birthday dinner with my elderly father. We both had a wonderful time. Staff were wonderful and authentically pleasant and helpful. My father is 80 and only felt the noise level of public voice mixed with music was a bit loud. (He politely tolerated) but felt we should share just for knowledge with elderly guests or people with hearing impairment The damper was a bit harder than his previous time at restaurant but still delicious. Thank you for sharing delicious made meals.

    Karkalla is an amazing experience, with absolutely unreal food that just captures beautiful Australian native taste and dining. The ambience of the restaurant is also intimate yet comfortable. Would highly recommend.

    Definitely our new fav in Byron. We live in the Byron Shire and of course we have our little list of tip top places for us but Karkalla was outstanding due the richness of the flavours in their dishes. Many places only use organic and local source ingredients which makes them a great place to visit, but Karkalla also had this amazing combination of ingredients that omg! We cant wait to come back and try more dishes! Well done guys!

    We had a super meal at Karakalla last night celebrating my birthday, my children 18 and 16 this morning were still talking about the beautiful different food they tried last night , we really enjoyed everything about the restaurant and loved that we were trying new ingredients, there is lots of native flavours on the menu...the food was outstanding, the drinks were delicious....you just have to go!

    The calamari and damper were beautiful as a starter, I went out of my comfort zone with a steamed barramundi Asian broth, but well worth it as it was delicious. Cocktails were great too. The staff were very knowledgable and were working under pressure as the restaurant was full, but managed to take care of everyone with grace and a smile.

    Really enjoyed the green fish (snapper) curry and accompanying crispy roti when it finally arrived, but had to wait over an hour for it owing to our shared plate order accidentally been give to a later diner. We were offered extra complimentary glasses of wine in recognition of the extra long wait. First large shared plate of steamed barramundi was a bit disappointing as broth was on the bland side, but chocolate coated mousse dessert was outstanding.

    A culinary delight, the owner and chef enthusiastic in explaining Australian native products and allowing diners to taste, so welcoming and friendly. Very relaxing and every mouthful a symphony for your palate, can’t wait to dine there again !
