We've been here a few times and initially enjoyed it. But after not visiting for about a year we decided to give it a try again and boy, it has really gone downhill. The food has become really tasteless and bland. Out of seven dishes, not one was worth the price or calories. It's always been pretty loud (but not as crowded as in the past) but the noise in the past was tolerable because the food was enjoyable. Now it's noisy with overpriced, bad food. We're certainly not going back.
Waited for waiter more than once! Waited to order, waited for drinks, waited for bread, waited for second glass of wine.
Zucchini patties were so heavily breaded that the zucchini was obscured. When we asked about the sauce on the swordfish it was described as salty but in reality it was very spicy and hot. The pork shoulder was so dried out it had to be left over from the previous night. This was so not worth the money we spent.
Really amazing and flavorful food. Their unlimited brunch option is a reasonable price with many options to choose from. Service was fantastic, quick and personable.
Our server Alex was awesome! The food was amazing and they were able to accommodate food allergies restrictions within the same table.
Every single item that we tasted was just beautifully done and amazingly good.
Thanks to entire staff that served our table, you made my birthday very special!
Location is really nice, easy to find parking.
After a wonderful experience a couple of months ago, we decided to try Kapnos again. What a mistake. Our service was horrible and the food was just okay. It will be long time before we try Kapnos again, especially with all the wonderful restaurants we have in this area! We were very disappointed! Up until our recent visit, we counted Kapnos as one of our favorite places for Sunday Brunch...sadly, we can't say that anymore.
Kapnos is such a great place to go for an enjoyable evening!
This is the 3rd time I’ve eaten at Kapnos and it is as good as I remembered. The food is delicious and the service is very good. Because many of the items are “small plates” it is possible to order too much, but our waitress recommended the perfect amount of plates for the two of us, which I appreciated. The anmbiance is great. The only issue is the noise level, but it’s not awful. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Great food and very friendly and helpful service. Waitstaff is very knowledgeable about the food and wine and is great in assisting with pairings.
Great selection and quality! Coffee cups are way too small though....they are like teacups...c'mon Kapnos!
A group of eight went to Kapnos for brunch, and we did the all you can eat option. The food was great, the mimosas good and they were good at keeping the carafes filled. It's hard to hear (we were in the front at a table), but a great vibe. The merguez gravy was a favorite, as was the soutzoukakia which is meatballs and soft eggs - the eggs were such a weird texture, but I loved them! I would have given better reviews, but one item we got was the bougatsa, which has a custard on the inside. It was too hot when we started eating it, and it burned the inside of my mouth to the point where it hurt for days afterwards. That didn't stop me from finishing it (it was fantastic after I got over the initial pain). I emailed the restaurant to let them know to perhaps wait a little longer before serving, but didn't hear back. All in all it was a good experience and I would definitely go back (and just be a bit more careful).
Casual brunch with friends
As always had a great evening at Kapnos. The food was great and the service, because of our great server Alex, was exceptional. Looking forward to having more great meals at Kapnos!!
Spotty service. We had a reservation yet they seated someone without one in a warm spot and stuck us right next to the freezing cold door. When we asked to move, they moved us to another spot right by the door claiming no seats. We had to keep flagging our waiter who seemed to ignore us much of the night. Disappointing. However, the food was fantastic!
Asked for a table as far away from bar and noise as possible. Request was honored and we were at Kapnos for 2 1/2 hours catching up, celebrating and enjoying/sharing the amazing food. Waiter was terrific, with great memory, suggestions and sense of humor evident.
Service was bad. The table was shaking and the manager told us that he had his tools in his car but had to make the table upside down to fix it. As we had our food served already on the table, we asked them to move us to another one. The other table available was also moving. So we had to deal with an unstable table all night long and keep geting our drinks spilled. Instead of asking if we wanted new drinks, they just wiped off the table. As a result, we could not enjoy our dinner although the food tasted good. Greek coffee with masythka was indeed “Greek”. It was basically regular coffee mixed with Masytka flavored liquor.
Mike Isabella and his team did it again! We love Kapnos and it has become our favorite place in Arlington for a nice meal out. This was my birthday dinner and they came through. Each mezza plate was outstanding. Great wine, service and dessert too.
Excellent service and great food. Became very noisy after 6:30 pm. Way too expensive for the quantity even though it is tapas
Brunch is awesome, they change their menus seasonally and that makes a big difference. All the waiters who served us were very cordial in our 3 experiences there!
We visited this location back in October, and it was AMAZING! So amazing, that when we had an opportunity to celebrate we decided to visit Kapnos Taverna again. Service was spectacular, the ambience is wonderful, but there is something terribly different about the food. All the dishes we loved before and were craving to try again, did not taste good at all. I was so disappointed. 😢
Typical Mike Isabella restaurant. Fun time but food underwhelming.
Kapnos serves a reliably good meal, and we do enjoy going there. The service, particularly from the host staff, leaves a bit to be desired.
We arrived for our reservation, and were told there was no table available yet. It was a busy time, so we weren't surprised or particularly miffed. We told the hostess we would wait in the bar area, but she forgot about us - we had to remind her we were there. We did eventually get seated, but in a very noisy location (next to a very large party). This was too bad, because we were on a very special date. Perhaps the host staff didn't think that was likely since both people are male and over 40. But it does happen.
The waiter botched our order a bit, probably because it was so difficult to hear, but we enjoyed it all the same. As mentioned, the food is very good.
And I said yes.
Had to wait 30 minutes for a table even though I made a reservation and I was also on time. Very embarrassing on a first date.
This was my second time here and the service and food were equally as good as the first time. The menu is easy to navigate and good for people who haven't tried Greek meze before. I tried new items this time and left impressed again.
Kapnos Taverna never disappoints. When you are a lover of Mediterranean food, this place adds a fresh twist to so many traditional dishes. I will continue to patronize this great date night spot.
Kapnos does it right every time! Our server was excellent offering good recommendations and delivering the small plates at a good pace.
We enjoyed one to two selections from each category plus 2 of their special offerings. All were well prepared and delish, not a morsel left on any plate.
The East coast oysters were briny and tasty, the spreads on the soft bread: smoked eggplant, feta and tzatziki highly recommended. Veggie choices: beet salad, cauliflower and brussel sprout dishes also excellent. The specials of lamb chops and red snapper were delicious. Kapnos has a very good drink list as well.
My brother bought me a gift card for a Mike Isabella restaurant, and this was the closest to where I lived. We really enjoyed the food, and the service was fantastic--our server was great and made some excellent recommendations. My only complaint was the noise level--it was loud! We got there relatively early--6 pm--so at first it wasn't too bad, but by time we left, it was at a roar.
I was not seated b/c the hostess was unable to provide a regular table to our party of 4.
She only offered a bar table (high chairs) which is uncomfortable for both of my parents' knees.
The treatment we received was not satisfactory so we left.
Food and service great!
I am a huge brunch fan and wanted to introduce my parents to the "bottomless brunch" experience that is so popular in the DMV. I spent so much time analyzing menus for their visit and finally decided on Kapnos Taverna in Ballston for our Saturday boozy brunch.
Kapnos Taverna did not disappoint. In fact, it was one of the best brunch experiences I have ever had.
First, our server Jovan, was exceptional. He was extremely friendly when he introduced himself and when we told him it was our first time at the restaurant/ ordering off a greek inspired menu, he took control and helped guide our brunch experience by recommending which dishes to order from start to finish. He kept our mimosas full and flowing which I think is critical at bottomless brunch. The mimosas were refreshing and strong. He placed our food orders and the dishes came out in a very timely manner.
The food itself was amazing. The pita bread was warm and soft. The sampling of 3 spreads (which Jovan recommended we start with) was so good and set the tone for the afternoon. My dad has never really been a fan of hummus but I think he ate more than half the plate of the spreads! The meats that came out with the dishes were so tender and juicy. We ordered a plate of lamb meat and I regret not ordering more plates of the wonderful meat and simply eating that. The desserts, especially the bakalava were the perfect way to end the brunch.
Overall, I think the atmosphere of Kapnos Taverna is very inviting. The staff is friendly and checked on our table multiple times. It is definitely a busy restaurant and yet the tables are spaced well enough and the ceilings are high enough that each table can have their own conversation without shouting to each other. It's a place to brunch with family or friends, a large or small group.
I want to try Kapnos in DC because I am extreme impressed with the mike Isabella concept restaurants. I will definitely be returning to Kapnos Taverna and only hope Jovan will be my server!
The food is always incredible. The only comment I would have is that the staff leave the skin and fat in the kitchen when a side of roasted lamb is ordered.
Parents in town
Really bad experience. Every dish was spicy and salty. Nothing like Greek cuisine. Will not return again. Please think twice if you want to go there. Zaytina was way much better.
Really good food, amazing cocktails and terrific service. Just watch that you don't run up the bill too fast!
Always good and reliable, but no diet soda and no artificial sweetener the day i was there. Weird.
not really a great spot for a Valentine's Day lunch. no special menu, no real benefit to making a reservation, seemed like a crowd of office workers having a quick lunch. quality of food was lower than i remembered.
Delicious amazing Greek food brunch! We loved the poached egg/avocado toast dish, phyllo chicken pot pie, Greek salads, spreads. Everything was wonderful!
Excellent good with quality service that never f feel rushed or pushy. You can hear your companions talk, but not the people at the next table, which is a downright miracle.
Good solid bottomless brunch. Really enjoyed the Greek spin on brunch classics.
