Much like the grounds themselves, as the leaves change colour with the seasons so too does the menu. Ingredients are kept local, seasonal and are predominately grown in the garden, allowing a unique spin on traditional fare like bánh mì and pho, but also contemporary dishes like chili and lime squid with pickled papaya. Jardin Tan can offer a different experience to each diner – enjoy a takeaway coffee from the outdoor kiosk, a warm and cosy indoor lunch or an afternoon drink in the thriving courtyard.
We were very disappointed with the service. Each time we needed something, after waiting for a long time, we had to search for a waiter to assist us. The serves of dishes were tiny when you looked at the price. We needed more greens in the soup as well. This was for us a special day and it was a disappointing experience especially the way in which it is advertised on your website, it looked very inviting there. I was also impressed with the way in which your website looked after us and followed up. I will be cautious when i book through you again as I might experience another poor restaurant.
Christmas lunch. Four professional friends all looking forward to good food and a couple of drinks in a relaxing environment Two asked for a bottle of wine and two asked for vodka. Initially told yes to vodka and coke then after bottle of wine arrived and food ordered advised that you had run out of vodka. No offer to get some despite many options close by. We asked to cancel our order only to be told that you had started preparing it. We cancelled anyway. To add insult, while I was paying the bill for the bottle of wine, a waitress followed my friends out of the restaurant and asked if they had settled the bill. Disgusting service. Won’t be back and definitely won’t recommend.
I used to love Jardin Tan but the food is definitely not as good as it used to be. The service was poor and the staff attitude is crap. When I booked the message said if we were more than five minutes late, they’d give our table away but they weren’t even full. Melbourne has so many great places where I feel valued and welcome. I don’t need to come back here again,
Lovely breakfast with friends in the back courtyard. The Vietnamese pancakes were fabulous
Whilst the food was nice, it was not worth the price though. Tofu salad was dry and blend. The lovely thing about this place was the selection of alcohol. Most disappointing thing was to have to wait for a table which I had reserved. I understand there are technical glitches, however, outside tables were available but not in use. Whilst there was a lovely selection of wines I will not be coming back here. Overpriced and waitress looked as though she did not want to be there, even when being smiled to.
SO DISAPPOINTING. THIS USED TO BE A FAVE. THE STAFF WERE SHOCKING. THE KITCHEN UNWILLING TO MAKE A FRIED EGG FOR A TODLER. OUR DIRTY DISHES WERE LEFT SITTING IN FRONT OF US FOR 30MINS AFTER WE FINISHED. SOME FOOD WAS GOOD, BUT SALADS WERE CLEARLY PRE-MADE AND STRAIGHT OUT OF THE FRIDGE, SO COLD.
WHAT A SHAME.
The food was bad & expensive!
Could not eat the chicken curry..No flavour at all. Salad dressing was so bland.
Small dishes like beef in betel leaves was tasteless & super expensive ($18 for 4 tiny rolls)
Staff slow...can't be bothered serving...
Our table was booked for outside, so the noise level was low and it was very pleasant to sit in the garden in dappled sun. The staff were friendly, the food was really good. Only disappointing that there were a few too many items listed on both the food and drinks menus that were unavailable to be ordered.
Environment and food was great.
Customer service not so good...had to request to order, service took too long.
Food was yummy, drinks were amazing- coconut water came in a real coconut and the other drinks were very tasty. Huge surcharge for public holiday (25%) and waited a long time to be served- to have our order taken and get some water for the table.
So very disappointing. The chicken in the PHO was uneatable, the lamb was super dry, the service was pretty average.
Food was amazing. The location does not need any introduction. Service is another winner. Thanks!
It was Father’s Day and it was under staffed. We waited almost an hour after our entree to get our mains.
Food was good but not enough staff and thus service wasn’t on point.
Great location, staff were friendly and efficient, however, the food was stodgy and lacked flavour. Also, the dining tables were a bit grubby looking. Disappointed.
Overall it wasn’t great.
Food was standard and maître’d was very un interested in being there.
This was the second time dining here. The place was noisy with an annoying person calling out to the chef all the time. Previously the food had been ok but this time it was pathetic. Very little and expensive.
Very nice way to start our morning. Had brunch with friends before walking around the Shrine of Remembrance and taking the Garden Explorer around the Royal Botanical Gardens. Loved my Vietnamese pancake.
Friendly staff and delicious food. Would visit again
My first ever review, I’ve stayed away from writing about anyone else’s business but this was so disappointing.
Wonderfully situated, great ambiance but dreadful food.
Lack of flavour, bland no finesse and no Vietnamese authenticity aside from the Vietnamese coffee.
Cold food was super cold, fridge cold which was disappointing and made it unenjoyable to eat.
Chicken pho was very bland and there was no offering of condiments to accompany.
Banh mi had fridge cold crispy chicken, not so crispy, no pate, no herbs just thick cut salad so more like a not very nice salad roll.
We had 3 more dishes that were equally disappointing.
It’s such a shame as it should be good....no great, but it’s really not.
Excellent location for lunchtime catchup with friends.
We had a lovely lunch, great service and the food was delicious
The food was tasty and of very good quality but we thought it was overpriced. The calamari cost $21 and there were only 5 or 6 small pieces in amongst the salad.
When public holiday surcharge and credit card surcharge were added it resulted in a pricey lunch for 4 people.
The service and the setting were both excellent.
We had the rice paper rolls and the chicken pho. Rice paper rolls were OK but would have preferred a nuoc cham dipping sause.
Pho was VERY disappointing - flavourless. Would have greatly benefited from lime wedges, chilli, coriander on the side.
We always enjoy our walk around the tan with family including grand children culminating in lunch at Jardin Tan...lovely day
I have always had great food & service but the last two visits the service has been very poor. We were given the wrong mains & when we told the waitress she didn't respond to our comment so we took it that she didn't really care. The food as always was great even if it wasn't what we ordered! Hoping for improved service to go with the delicious food.
We went before we went to the circus performance and it was disappointing
Excellent Vietnamese/French fusion, imaginative menu. Very good service. Worth a visit for a casual meal or a celebratory 'get together'.
We had a really lovely Father’s Day .. after walking the tan.
I’ve been here a few times now and have always enjoyed it hence my recommendation to revisi on this occasion.
We had the banquet and If I can be critical I would suggest when there is one piece per person then the portion size should be same or similar - we were served up 4 pieces ( 2 small and rather manky pieces and 2 on the side that were a good size and appealing). Makes it embarrassing when friends want to be polite and take the lesser piece.
We also were over charged on our drinks, charged 1xbottle rather than 1xglass, other drinks were fine.
Perfect location for a casual get together with dear friends- interesting food choices, delicious tastes, unhurried atmosphere (we were able to sit for some hours) .
We had poor service. The coffees were cold we ordered drinks that didn’t show up. The beef pho only had one small piece of beef in it.
Fabulous for our annual "awesome foursome" girls lunch. A perfect Melbourne autumn day made for a magic time. Delicious food, lovely bubbles and beautiful surrounds with the decking surrounded on two sides by the kitchen garden. Ideal location for a walk from Flinders St station to chat and enjoy the autumn sunshine.
Barely a pass. Service whilst friendly, was just so very very slow. Also, a number of items on the menu were unavailable. Food was a long way from the quality Vietnamese available elsewhere.
7 of us had an excellent and relaxing outside experience and really enjoyed the food. Service was good, didn't interrupt, friendly. We really enjoyed the food.
Good location and of 3 dishes two were very good and one less so. However the service was terrible. We had to keep finding someone to take an order, get some water, ask for coffee etc etc. It was busy but not overly so. We were sitting near a glass window/door And so maybe they thought we didn’t want to be disturbed!
Great spot for a catch up if you like Asian flavours. Good spot to bring international visitors as you get to enjoy walking through the gardens as well!!
6 Carnivores and one Vegan. Delicious food, lots of options everyone. Service was a bit slow but that wasn't really a problem. Some lovely and interesting cocktails. Overall really good value and would definitely go back.
Good food, great venue but ceiling fans would help lower the temperature on what was a rather hot day.
Amazing food and good service in a beautiful setting. Experience was spoilt by extremely noisy large party in restaurant. Would have liked to see staff address this problem for the benefit of other diners.
