At Ipanema you can immerse yourself in a true Brazilian-Portuguese experience with famous dishes including: feijoada, vatapá, pão de queijo, bacalhau assado, bitoque mariscada, and more.
great food, creative, good service and wonderful ambience
Everything was absolutely delicious. The staff was very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. My only small complaint is that it was a little too warm for me. I am definitely coming back!
Second time dining at Ipanema. The first visit was amazing, food was great, so my friends and I decided to go again. Not sure if they were having a bad night but the food was mediocre. I ordered a steak medium rare and while it came with the proper doneness, it was mushy, grainy and had no chew to it. One of my friends had eaten here before on a separate occasion also agreed that it was amazing the first time she dined here but that tonight's food was lackluster. I want Ipanema to stay a dining option when I'm in the area but this experience has made me doubtful.
Loved the food and the service even more! They are very welcoming and makes you feel right at home! Thanks for an awesome dining experience! Will definitely be back if we find ourselves in the area.
This was my 3rd time here. The service was excellent and the food was delicious. My daughter enjoyed celebrating her 21st birthday here.
Staff were very attentive during our visit. Food was lovely and the portions were very generous. Noisy during our visit but this was due to Brazil playing football being shown on the screen in the restaurant.
We had dinner at Ipanema when we were in town for a Broadway show. The food was well prepared and tasty. The portions were generous. Our waiter was very attentive and helped us understand the various dishes of Brazilian cuisine. The beer he recommended tasted good and went well with the stew. The salad was delicious because of the olive oil and lime dressing. We had cake soaked in milk for dessert, which we enjoyed. The sizzling steak dish was on the salty side and a bit tough. All in all, it was a good experience. (Note: this is the review for Ipanema, not Thalia, which was inadvertently posted to the wrong location.)
Ordered an appetizer that never came out, our server realized this once our entrees were being brought to the table (could see him talking off to the side to one of the bus boys)
Server failed to apologize or even acknowledge that the appetizer never came out, and instead brought us a side of potatoes free of charge. Best part is that we were charged for the appetizer still. I deducted the price of the appetizer from his tip and wrote a note on the receipt. What an embarrassment of a food server
There's a lot dishes to choose from so I asked the waiter to get a better description. I ordered Vatapa and it was delicious! We enjoyed our dinner, a lively and casual place to enjoy a meal.
Awful service and overpriced food. Would not go back
Amazing and very good value for the price. Thank you for this.
Everything Brazilian without the need to leave NYC!
Very friendly service and excellent meats which were well prepared. The appetizers were also great.
My only disappointment was the noise level. The Yelpers who called this place cozy and romantic were on some mind-altering substance. That said, we loved our food and service.
Ipanema is really excellent overall, with one caveat - it gets noisy when the restaurant is close to full.
The cuisine is really excellent. Starters: Portuguese sausage with yucca and a carioca salad. Entrees: paelho (paella), salmon, and monk fish stew. All highly recommended. Also try the Feijoada - a black bean stew with mixed meats. For dessert Ipanema has a very good tres leches, and it is a large portion easily shared by 2-4 people! The Brazilian decaf coffee was OK but nothing special.
Decor is excellent - soothing wood tones. Our waiter was excellent - attentive and knowledgeable with great recommendations. One service down note - the separate person who took our dessert and coffee orders was rather abrupt and we needed to repeat things a couple of times.
If you like rich, dark beer you must try the draught Brazilian Xingu Black - wow, and it matches with the cuisine fabulously.
As noted, one downside is noise. As the restaurant fills up it gets noisy and it becomes necessary to speak louder to be heard.
Very highly recommended despite the noise. We have been there several times and will be back.
I came to the restaurant for a business meal per a coworker’s recommendation, and I was extremely surprised and disappointed by the service. I had to wait for 15 to 20 minute increments for the server to take my order and check on me. I then ordered my entrée medium rare and it came medium well or well cooked. Based on this experience, I would struggle to recommend to others.
We were looking for a better than average Mexican restaurant and were persuaded by the Open Table reviews to try Ipanema. Glad we did. Ipanema will be a regular stop on frequent visits to NYC
We were immediately seated. There was a good vibe
Our drinks ca
The food and service at this place are always top/notch. The empanadas & calamari are always excellent appetizers. The mixed grill & paella were enough to feed a battalion so our party of 4 had lots to take home with us.
I came here for my graduation dinner with some family and I’m so glad I chose Ipanema. The food was super good, especially the churrasco ipanema! Great service, great atmosphere. Already planning my next visit with friends.
Food was the key here. Black Bean Stew was amazing
Very good choice in Little Brazil in Manhattan. Excellent food and service!
We were there for lunch. My colleagues had the lunch sandwiches which looked good. The cheese bread was so so. I ordered the Tuesday Brazilian shrimp special. Was OK - could be less sweet. We tried the custard desert - was good. The other person ordered the croquettes which looked really interesting. Not a bad place. I was disappointed with my coffee though.
Excellent experience. We shared appetizers and had plenty to eat. Specialty drinks were great !!
Delicious food, great service, tasty cocktails, this place has it all. The menu is clearly labeled if food allergies are a concern. My wife and I will definitely will be back again soon!
Food mediocre and overpriced. The server we had was pretty bad. He came to take our order and during mid ordering he said, “I’ll be right back.” He went to serve food at another table and then never came back to take our order. So I flagged him down and he came over and asked how he can help us, as if he didn’t initially take our order. Then I proceeded to ask if we can finish our order. Once the order was placed the appetizers came out fairly quickly, but the entree took almost 45 mins to come out. There was only a handful of tables there. Not busy at all. The kicker is when asking for the check. He asked if we wanted any desserts and I replied, “No thanks, just the check please.” He never came back with the check after 10 mins. I flagged him down again to ask for the check. 15 mins past still no check. I decided to ask another server for the check. He came back with it in 2 mins flat. My server never came back to apologize or even thank us for coming. He pretty much disappeared as if he wasn’t even our server. Definitely not recommending this place for any type of dining.
The food was great. And the prices were affordable. No complaints here.
Had an excellent time when we went for dinner. We were party of 6 including 2 kids. Our waiter was extremely helpful in suggesting kid friendly items and esp with his suggestion of cocktails. Loved the ambiance and food. Not a single person left disappointed. Highly recommend this place and will plan on coming back again to try other options.
The food was delicious the service was a little slow but, overall, would dine here again. The skirt steak and sirloin were both amazing.
Service was very good. Food was good but a little bland
The sangria was not good. Tasted like grape juice
Very noisy and no ambiance
But there are 2 tables at the entrance that we appreciated.
Nice spot, very good food & great service. Would recommend!
The food was okay, but the black beans had no favor and weren't cooked well done. In addition, the mashed potatoes appeared to be instant potatoes. I attempted to explain it to our waiter, but he didn't understand. Lastly, the waiter brought us another bowl; it was warmer, but still were hard and had no favor to them.
The food was very good but we were seated upstairs with several large groups that were loud and the wait staff were focused on the groups. Would definitely return but request seating downstairs.
Really enjoyed Ipanema. Food was excellent . Our server was knowledgeable about the menu and recommended things to try. I will definately return on my next visit to NYC!
The food was delicious, and the wait staff was very attentive. The lighting in the dining room was a touch darker than I would like (it made reading the menu difficult), and the noise level was loud enough it was hard to hear our server some times, but over all, our experience here was positive.
This is our second visit to Ipanema which means we were impressed the first time. We had the pao ( cheese rolls) to start. And for our entrees, we had the Picanha and the Gaucho which are amazing meats...seasoned well and flavorful. The rice and beans that accompanied the meats were hearty and the potatoes delicious but addicting.
My only area for improvement in both instances we dined here would be the speed and effectiveness of service. I don’t know how they assign roles but it seems like only one server for all the tables could take your order or process the check which doesn’t make sense since you could have multiple parties walking in at the same time. I imagine some diners are there before a show and would need to get to the theater on time. It seems like there are servers who clear the plates and fill water glasses exclusively. Anyway, to the customer it feels like you can’t get what you need from just any server.
This was our second time eating at Ipanema. We loved it the first time and this time did not disappoint. The food is excellent and service is good. We would definitely recommend it.
Been here several times in the past. It's always a very nice experience and the food is always excellent.
I always check reviews and this place had a good once. What a disappointment! Food was less then mediocre, tasteless! Service was simply horrible.
Ipanema restaurant is an out-of-the-way treasure in the Times Square area, The food that we have tasted has been truly well-prepared and extremely tasty. The white sangria is outstanding; all of the dishes are authentically Portuguese. Please try the Paella and the Mariscada; if it suits your pallet, then the octopus salad is to die for. It is our "go-to" restaurant when we are in the city.
