Il Canale Ratings and Reviews
We love this place! After several visits we know we’re going to make this one of our regular dinner spots. The service is amazing, and so fast! Even on a crowded and packed Friday night, we were seated quickly and before the wine was even opened our appetizer was there! Our sever, Aldo, was awesome! He recommended a wine from his native town in Italy, and it was delicious! The food is amazing, I’ve enjoyed the lobster ravioli multiple times and we’ve tried other items as well. Highly recommend the gluten free pasta as well if you are gluten free - can’t taste the difference! Wonderful place with great service and what a value on price as well! We will be coming here regularly for a long time!
This place is extremely loud and it is difficult to hear the person seated next to you. The food is very average and overpriced. The service is fine, but not good enough to compensate for the other factors. This seems to be best suited for college students, although given the prices, college students with a decent budget.
My husband and I were supposed to go here for our first wedding anniversary. It turned out to be a disaster. We arrived before our reservation time, and the line was out of the door. It took 15 minutes to just approach the hostess station, and then we were rudely told that "everyone will get seated" - while noticing that walk ups were being seated. We waited another 10 minutes before being shoved to a table. I understand that the restaurant was packed, but we did not enjoy the chaos from the staff or the noise level. The ambiance was terrible so we left immediately and went somewhere else. I am sure the food would have been good, but we were so annoyed with getting to our table that everything else was ruined. Maybe the description should be updated to casual dining not meant for special occasions.
Bruno was amazing and incredibly personable. I recommend making a reservation because there were people waiting consistently (clearly because il Canale is so delicious)! The restaurant handles people incredibly well. It was packed when we went, but it didn't seem crowded or too loud. The food is delicious and doesn't disappoint. Bruno's recommendation of the tiramisu was a winner for sure!
Stuck to pizzas, as per other reviews, and it was excellent! Hard to do a thin crust so well. We are originally from NY...need I say more! Service was very good and chef came out for some genuine feed back. Wish we had tried something else, sonwe could give more. We did have salads, and they were not very notable, either way.
After reading reviews, was excited to try Il Canale. The food was ok to good, not great. I decided on a pizza, then queried the server on the one with spicy salami. I asked specifically, "is the salami sliced into round disks or shredded into strips and then globbed onto the pizza?" She told me no, just into long thin strips and not globbed on. Against my better judgement, I said ok, I'll try it. What did I get? shredded pepperoni globbed onto the pizza. Yuck. Also, and while not the restaurant's fault, we were seated outside, a guy eating by himself gabbed an entire business call into his cell phone the whole time we were eating. It would have been nice had the manager or someone come over and asked him to end his call in the interest of other diners. But nothing. Mr. rude/gabber kinda ruined the meal for us.
The food was delicious and the pizza especially. Would have liked to try the other options but could not eat any more. They did forget to bring our caprese but apologized and offered free cannolis. It was not quiet and at times was difficult to even hear across the table. Would still recommend for any occasion if in town because the food was exceptional.
I never got to Il Canale, due to not booking it in the first place....Open Table did that without even being asked too, and as the restaurant is in Washington, DC and I'm here in SCOTLAND.....I found transport a bit problematic.....no reflection on the probably, very fine eating place at all.😞
Service was slow. Server was respectful but seemed overworked. He told us the bar was overloaded and delayed. 1 of the 3 pastas was cold, as was the meat sauce on it.
It seems the restaurant is trying to serve too many customer for the size of kitchen, bar and wait staff.
This is a good spot for a super casual weekday date night or for a couple of families that want to get together after a soccer game or casual event. The staff is very friendly, and the food is good...but not particularly special. If you are going to choose an entree (such as the fish, chicken or steak) you are better served going elsewhere. But for "fancy pizza" with good apps it is probably a great place.
Wonderful atmosphere overall ~ we were disappointed that they gave us a noisy section near the path of staff and people, so it was noisier and crowed feeling. We had 2 kids with us so felt as though we were place at more unfavorable seating, so we did not get the full ambiance of the main room.
