Great food, great service, affordable pricing, casual taqueria-style service where you may drop in for a quiet bite and move on, or stay for a full meal. The prime focus of the restaurant is Tostadas, with Tacos playing second fiddle. Think seafood, both raw and cured (ceviche/aguachile). It is fresh and simple produce served in a fast paced environment. And all tortillas are made in house, a Melbourne first!
Hotel Jesus is located in the old Collingwood post office building in Smith Street and inspired by the traditional ’70s-style taquerias and tostaderias of Mexico. Taqueros, the taco masters of Mexico City, are the main attraction.

Very small serves with hardly any toppings on tiny tacos. Pulled pork was dry. Over priced for what it was and food was not very tasty. Would not recommend.
Great Mexican food with a twist. Quick service and delicious.
We keep coming back. Super casual, delicious food, great prices and consistently great all around. If you're after awesome-yet-casual, reasonable prices and great drinks - you can't go past. Recommend getting the esquites to start, and Lamb barbacoa tacos somewhere after. The tamarind mezcalrita was great too.
Special shout-out to our waitress who was also a Mezcal lover ;P
Even though the restaurant was beautifully decked out, all the food seemed to just be slopped on a plate. The brisket was really dry bland meat with sauce placed on top
Such a great vibe at Hotel Jesus. Food...delicious. Service...friendly and professional. Absolutely worth a visit for a casual lunch or dinner. Styling...Fabulous. Ticks all the boxes
Came here with a group of friends. We ordered a variety of food and shared. Everything was delicious. A bit different than the usual Mexican food you get which I normally find a bit boring. The service was really good, the waitress was super helpful. The atmosphere is really fun, a little loud but not too bad. I want to come back to eat in one of the booths! Will bring the bf next time to try!
Food was good but the plastic cups and cheap plates didnt do it justice. Priced like a classy eatery but far too casual for what we paid.
A fantastic night. We were running late but they kept the table for us. Service was excellent and very tasty meals. The drinks werent cheap but they were delicious so no complaints. Thank you for taking such great care of us. I know that we arrived late but we definitely appreciated the high levels of service.
Lacking ambience. Staff were very pushy for our table (understood there was seating times & we were ready to pay & leave but were reminded/asked several times & felt this was unnecessary given restaurant was completely empty). Food was good but was expecting AMAZING things overall as recommended by several Sydney friends but felt it fell short of expectations.
We enjoyed it! Food was delicious and margaritas were Nice too. We got a good booth seat and our waitress / staff who attended to us were lovely .. didn’t try to rush us out!
Absolutely outstanding! Never thought Mexican style cuisine could be so delicious. The starter corn dish was incredible. The pork belly main was great value and delicious, it was a huge piece of pork too which you don’t find very often. The staff recommended a Mezcal spirit which I loved. Very friendly and helpful staff. We will be returning for sure to try all the other dishes.
Our waitress seemed a bit frazzled that night. Maybe she was having an off night. Got my drinks order incorrect and missed a few items off our food order. Though that turned out to be a lucky occurrence since we over ordered. Everything looked delicious and we wanted to try them all. We had a great time nevertheless. Will definitely be coming back with more friends, so we can order more food.
Super slow drink service, it takes a long time (over 20 min) to get margarita. Not very personable service. Food lacked in flavour, especially salt (had to ask for it) and when asked for extra chilies they didn’t have any.
We were really looking forward to trying Hotel Jesus after coming back from Bali and experimenting Motel Mexicola but was sadly disappointed. Food was just ok.
lack of service to warrant the prices that you are charging.
portion sizes were small. your competition down the road provides better service, wine list and attention to detail.
the fact that we had to fill out our own tab alla Yum Cha style does not reflect the prices.
Absolutely amazing food and an experience for my boyfriend’s birthday!
Loved the food and the atmosphere and would absolutely be back for that alone. Really interesting open kitchen and bar and decor.
Great food, great drinks and awesome friendly service.
The dining and drinks experience was ruined by a rude staff member who instructed us to supply a calculator while trying to split the table bill over 2 credit cards. The rest of the staff were fine, although we did have 1 incorrect cocktail delivered to the table, and 1 dish was forgotten. The experience while paying the bill was unnecessarily rude and a real shame!
Had a lovely meal. Everything was really tasty. The Esquites were delicious. The smoky black mayo adding great depth. Loved the blackened chicken. Staff were lovely and the vibe was fun. Only let down was the brisket - it needed to be cooked a bit longer as it wasn’t falling apart and we felt it needed more bang - didn’t quite meet its own brief.
Great flavour and fresh ingredients really authentic loved all the dishes great place for sharing dishes
Great décor, cool atmosphere and brilliant food. A lot of surprising option on the menu. Veggie tacos a highlight.
we had the most wonderful waitress , the service was brilliant , she was attentive, efficient, friendly - we were extremely impressed with her considering how busy it was
Excellent service!, an incredible night! Great variety of dishes and drinks!
Over priced food and drink. Feed me menu was not worth it. Decor is great.
Attended with family for mothers day lunch, food was actually quite healthy, not to heavy, very fresh and tasty. Also the set menu at 48$ per head plus one basic drink each on arrival was very reasonable. Note** this may have been a mothers day only special.
Service is fabulous and the food is always amazing and consistent.
Unbelievable service, loved the recommendations and Tacos so good
Went to Hotel Jesus for dinner with friends whilst visiting Melbourne. Loved the decor, super cool. Staff were friendly and helpful. Food was arrived quickly and was delicious. I particularly enjoyed the marrow bone. Can’t wait to visit Melbourne again so I can go back to Hotel Jesus.
I find that the quality and taste of food is not up to expectation for the value paid. The taco crackers were way too hard, the cured seafood dish was way too sour and overall dishes were only luke warm. I was referred by friends to come but was pretty dissapointed with my dining experience.
The food was amazing. The experience was frustrating however as staff kept reminding us that we needed to be out by 830. This urgency began from when we sat down until we left at 832. It was disappointing at the experience felt rushed and was not necessary as when we left there were many spare tables around.
DELICIOUS FOOD, SUPER FRIENDLY AND HELPFUL STAFF AND A REALLY FUN VIBE
Huge fan of traditional mexican and this place did not disappoint. Loved everything we tried and the variety of food was great for coeliacs (GF), vegetarians and meat lovers alike. Will definitely go back again!
Absolutely fantastic vibe, like I was transported to Mexico. Food is yum and micheladas are amazing!! Make sure to ask for extra hot salsa - el diablo. Thanks for an epic night!
Great staff & exceptional food. Already can’t wait to go back
We ate the $45pp banquet. It was the most amazing food we have ever eaten. So much food was brought out. The cured fish was outstanding and the pork and lamb barely even needed chewing.
Best mexican I've ever had i think! Everything was so delcious, waitress reccomended the corn and the paloma margarita, both were amazing! And turned out really cheap, highly highly reccomend!
Getting kicked out of a restaurant after 90 mins sucks. Hotel Jesus needs to rethink this policy. We won't be back.
Delicious food, great service and really nice atmosphere. Thanks :)
Came here with a few friends for my wife’s birthday and was unfortunately disappointed. The hostess lacked the usual cheery greeting you’d want as they’re the first person to welcome guests to the restaurant and our waiter seemed so overwhelmed and unhappy that he often left us feeling like we had imposed. In his defense it was a Friday night and they did look pretty short staffed. My wife and I had ordered the Feed Me deal but we’re not informed until the entire table had finished their meals that we couldn’t order that unless the whole table ordered it. Wouldn’t have been a problem in reordering if we didn’t wait there wondering where our food was for nearly 20 minutes. Again, waiter wasn’t very apologetic in forgetting to explain but made an attempt to put our order in quickly. I felt a little embarrassed as this was meant to be a special occasion for my wife and she had been really excited to come to the restaurant. The only things that saved the experience was when our food did arrive it was fabulous, everyone loved their cocktails and sangria as well, and the one woman that brought food to our table was maybe the friendliest employee you have. It’s still a relatively new place I think so hopefully the kinks will be worked out over time. Good luck to you
