Great food, great service, affordable pricing, casual taqueria-style service where you may drop in for a quiet bite and move on, or stay for a full meal. The prime focus of the restaurant is Tostadas, with Tacos playing second fiddle. Think seafood, both raw and cured (ceviche/aguachile). It is fresh and simple produce served in a fast paced environment. And all tortillas are made in house, a Melbourne first!
Hotel Jesus is located in the old Collingwood post office building in Smith Street and inspired by the traditional ’70s-style taquerias and tostaderias of Mexico. Taqueros, the taco masters of Mexico City, are the main attraction.
Incredible food, fun atmosphere. The walk to the bathroom is arduous yet exciting
I don’t live in Melbourne but visited last year and have been thinking about the corn dish since then. I have recommended to a few people visiting Melbourne to go try Hotel Jesus. Very good atmosphere and food.
Great vibe and good drinks list. Yummy starters. Friendly attentive staff. Only down side was that our soft shell crab taco larger plate was a bit bland.
Great and tasty Mexican food! The ceviche AMAZING!
Great food and atmosphere. Some staff were really nice but some treated you like you were an inconvenience. All in all, come for the good food, not he friendly service.
I had an unpleasant experiences with Hotel Jesus. I made a reservation for table of 14 on last Saturday night at 6.30pm for my birthday The dining time limit was 2 hours. Almost all of my guest came on time. However, the first 1.5 hours we only being served with few entree and the main course only served at 8pm. After 10 mins, the waitress came to me and said they will need to clear the table in 20 mins. That’s why we had to quickly eat the main course and the waitress only brought the birthday cake to us in the last 5 mins and told us to leave as soon as we took the photos . This is totally unexpected in hospitality industry. We don’t even have the time to eat the cake and force to leave ! We spent about $500+++ on that night and we expected to have a great dining experiences. I understand it was peak hours but hotel Jesus already expected for our arrival 1 week earlier and even know which banquet menu we go for, at least you should prepare our food earlier or priorities us. Overall, the food is not worth of the value and the time management should be improve.
Hi Daphne, thanks for your multiple reviews and return email. After going through the CCTV footage and point of sale we have noted many discrepancies between the alleged timings of your meal. Unfortunately we cannot offer you and your guests a free dinner as you've requested and we wish you all the best.
Food was next level. Service wasn't. Took at least 10 minutes for someone to realise we had arrived before giving us menus so we were quick to order. Food came out fast and it was amazing. When we'd finished, we decided we'd have another drink before we had to leave at 3pm. Unfortunately, there wasn't anyone to be seen to be able to order anything. We noticed another table had to get up to go and get their own plates/cutlery. I'd emailed earlier in the week about a birthday surprise for our friend but we had to leave because of somewhere else we had to be. Pretty disappointing to be honest.
Amazing food, fun ambience - will definitely be back!
Great food, and the vibe was so cool. Love it, will be back for sure.
Great decor and retro vibes, friendly staff but the food is so overpriced and small portions
It is in my top 3 favourite Mexican restaurants, I have been there couple of times. However, this time it was a bit disappointing, we booked a table at 5:30pm, we arrived 5:26pm, the door was opened so we came in, one of the staff (looked like the manager) was a bit rude and asked us to leave because they open at 5:30.
It is fair enough that they don’t want to have people inside before 5:30, I just think there are better ways to ask for it or keep the door closed.
The food was nice and the waitress very polite and helpful.
Great food amazing drinks, groovy decor. Service a little hard to make eye contact sometimes though. But super friendly when you finally got their attention.
Excellent Mexican food at a price the won’t break the budget. Servings were generous - the ceviche tostada was a winner on a hot day - and the fit-out with its mismatched tiles just added to the experience.
Amazing. Super tasty. Fresh. 2 items came out a bit late but they were apologetic and gave us our appetiser for free because of it. Would stay at this hotel again.
For an authentic taste of Mexico, this is your place.
Who would have thought brussels sprouts would be our favourite dish? Seriously, they're so tasty. As is everything else that we've tried. Thanks!
Delicious food and cocktails. We come here every time we are in Melbourne and twice in one week this trip.
having just come back from Mexico was always going to be a very harsh critic. the fit out is very cool, light bright and airy with some very quirky decoration and a nice view of the kitchen, it is bit "echoy" though. the food was on the whole very good and pretty authentic. the refried beans were delicious as was the corn with the black mayonnaise, great tostados but the guacamole was a bit tricked for me. The tuna sashimi tostadas were delicious outlooked abut scary as the tun was in one quite large piece, tasted divine though!
we were a bit disappointed with tacos al pastor the pork was a little dry. Blackened chicken quesadilla was very good and very filling.
service was superb. We were advised the wine list was changing and the albarino we picked wasn't available but we were offered two options one of which was a sauvignon blanch which we were very afraid but were very pleasantly surprised, good value too. Overall very good but not Mexico in Melbourne just yet!
Loved the eclecticism of the restaurant the food was divine & sensational flavours , service attentive & great atmosphere. Highly recommend!!
Beautifully designed Mexican cantina serving delicious and inventive food. A visual feast as well as a delight for the tastebuds.
Hi Beth, thanks so much for leaving such a positive review. We look forward to seeing you again!
Food was ok.
Hi Anonymous. Sorry to hear that you found the food only ok. Given you scored the other elements of your night an average of 4, a final score of 2 is most disheartening for us given the amount of time and energy we spend on providing the best product we can. Would you be so kind as to email us directly so that we can delve further into what drove this low score? Regards, Matt
Hotel Jesus is focussed on a demographic which is not inclusive. As a frequent restaurant goer, I could not recommend it to diners over 50, or those who would like some input from the wait staff about timing of service, given it involves shared plates and many small dishes piling up on the the table without any idea of planning some time lapse between dishes. The restaurant was not busy and the kitchen not under pressure.
My dining companion was very unimpressed with a plastic container for her sangria which was not a good first impression. Nowhere in Spain nor in Mexico at the level this restaurant is aiming at, would this be acceptable.
While the wait staff were pleasant and provided clean plates as necessary, we did not need another paper napkin at every stage. We ended the evening handing back at least 6 unused paper napkins to the staff member clearing the table.
Hi Robyn. Sorry to hear that you find our restaurant environment non inclusive. We have many regulars aged 50+. If there was a timing issue with your coursing please accept my apologies. We've modeled the restaurant directly on our favourite restaurant in Mexico. The plastic vessels were bought and shipped back to ensure we replicated that same experience. I'm glad to hear the staff were attentive to your needs and will be sure to remind them to be aware of over servicing our guests.
very cute place
had to have the banquet because it was Tuesday which is a bit odd ... but very nice food .. even though we couldnt choose the dishes we wanted
Hi Anag, thanks for a great 4 star review. As we offer a discounted Taco Tuesday night reservations are only for banquets. It states this in bold letters when you make your reservation online. We implemented this due to the large numbers of guests no showing which meant we were turning many walk up diners away. Not ideal, but we still wanted to offer both options. If you wanted to provide any more feedback of how we could make this system better please get in touch via email. Kind regards, JB
Every time we attend Hotel Jesus, we're blown away. The service, quality of food and ambience are all amazing. We couldn't recommend Hotel Jesus more!
Hotel Jesus were very accommodating to my party of 19 and the food was amazingly tasty, everyone was very happy with their experience there.
I have been here quiet alot ans recommended this place to alot of people as being one of my favourites, haven't been for a few months went back on Saturday night and was disappointed with the food and service . Food was bland. Corn being my favorite dish was watery and no flavour, prawn taco was also watery and no flavour, lamb was very dry. These are the same dishes I get every time and can't even compare how different it all was. All thestaff seemed like they have changed didn't really interact with the customers as they usually do. No ambiance. Maybe I'll try in another few months but will definitely won't recommend until they pick up there game.
All was good except for the entree that we thought was a but expensive for what it was - sweet potato with guacamole
Cocktails were nice
It's an eclectic little spot, however the food was not as good as on previous visits. In saying that when we mentioned one of the skewers was as tough as old boots (literally) they removed the charge from the menu. Some of the other dishes were still outstanding including the pumpkin.
Amazing food, great options for vegetarians and vegans.
We are Fitzroy locals who come here at least once a week or once every other week. The food and service is fantastic, it always has been from the first time we went. The sangria is to die for, the esquites for an entree is indescribably good. The flavours in all the food the chefs make are exceptional, the hosts and waitresses are always friendly and chilled. I recommend this place to all friends family and visitors from afar!! Love you HJ
Due to crazy weather we arrived very late for our booking on a Friday night before Christmas - but the team at Hotel Jesus were so accomodating, they had every right to be hating on us and cancel our booking, but let us have our table, add an extra person to our party, and let us know at the beginning when our table needed to be vacated by. Thanks guys, really appreciate it.
This place is amazing. The food and margaritas were so delicious and filling. Great service and the girls there were really helpful and lovely for service. The atmosphere is really great. The seats are set up so you’re not too close to anyone but you will feel the vibe it’s mean to portray. Definitely recommend and will be back :)
Everything was good, however food took a while to come out and waitress was less than friendly.
The food is delicious, but well overpriced for what it is. Also, if you're expecting a smile from the staff you're asking too much. I get busy times are tough... but at least pretend to be friendly.
Visited 8:30pm on the 10/11/2018. Was seated in the booths to the left when entering.
Took a couple of friends back after raving about this place. A bit worried it wouldn't live up to their expectations after hearing me go on & on. They both loved it. One was vegetarian so we had the veg version of "Feed Me". Many wow's & mmmmmm's followed as we enjoyed so many taste sensations.
the only thing we weren't mad on were the raw green beans but out of more than a dozen dishes that's not bad going at all! Looking forward to going again soon even though it's an hour and a half drive.
ps even if you think you're full to the brim and couldn't fit another thing - don't leave without have dessert!
Amazing food as usual, very friendly waiter .
Love it here
Nice food but overpriced and the service between courses was slow.
Tacos are to die for... everything else we had was pretty damn awesome too, but I would have killed for a lime with the xico mole.
The perfect taco bar! For a moment I thought I was back in Mexico.
We had to transact our own bill via eftpos. We expect service when we eat out...
Waitress kept forgetting our orders, there was a delay in the food to come out.
My first and last experience there.
